Book Measurement of D0 Lifetime with the BaBar Detector

Download or read book Measurement of D0 Lifetime with the BaBar Detector written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is the result of the researchers carried out during a three years Ph. D. period in the BABAR experiment. The first chapter consists in an introduction to the theoretical aspects of the D° meson lifetime determination and CP violation parameters, as well as an overview of the CP violation in the B sector, which is the main topic of the experiment. The description of the experimental apparatus follows with particular attention to the Silicon Vertex Tracker detector, the most critical detector for the determination of decay vertices and thus of lifetimes and time dependent CP violation asymmetries. In the fourth chapter the operation and running of the vertex detector is described, as a result from the experience as Operation Manager of the SVT, with particular attention to the safety of the device and the data quality assurance. The last chapter is dedicated to the determination of the D° meson lifetime with the BABAR detector, which is the main data analysis carried out by the candidate. The analysis is characterized by the selection of an extremely pure sample of D° mesons for which the decay flight length and proper time is reconstructed. The description of the unbinned maximum likelihood fit follows, as well as the discussion of the possible sources of systematic uncertainties. In the appendix is also presented a preliminary study of a possible development regarding the determination of mixing and CP violation parameters for the D° meson.

Book Flavor Physics and the TeV Scale

Download or read book Flavor Physics and the TeV Scale written by George W. S. Hou and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-05-20 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ?avor sector carries the largest number of parameters in the Standard Model of particle physics. With no evident symmetry principle behind its existence, it is not as well understood as the SU(3)×SU(2)×U(1) gauge interactions. Yet it tends to be underrated, sometimes even ignored, by the erudite. This is especially so on the verge of the LHC era, where the exploration of the physics of electroweak symmetry breaking at the high energy frontier would soon be the main thrust of the ?eld. Yet, the question of “Who ordered the muon?” by I. I. Rabi lingers. We do not understand why there is “family” (or generation) replication. That three generations are needed to have CP violation is a partial answer. We do not understand why there are only three generations, but Nature insists on (just about) only three active neutrinos. But then the CP violation with three generations fall far short of what is needed to generate the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. We do not understand why most fermions are so light on the weak symmetry breaking scale (v. e. v. ), yet the third-generation top quark is a v. e. v. scale particle. We do not understand why quarks and leptons look so different, in particular, why neutrinos are rather close to being massless, but then have (at least two) near maximal mixing angles. We shall not, however, concern ourselves with the neutrino sector. It has a life of its own.

Book Recent Results from the BaBar Experiment

Download or read book Recent Results from the BaBar Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors present an overview of some of the most recent results from the BABAR experiment. They discuss the latest measurement of the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays to several CP eigenstates, that in the Standard Model (SM) is proportional to sin 2[beta]. They present measurements of branching fractions and CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays to two-body final states of charged pions and kaons, that are related to the angle [alpha] of the Unitarity Triangle. They also report the B[sup 0] lifetime measurement obtained from studying the B[sup 0] [yields] D*[sup -] [pi][sup +] and B[sup 0] [yields] D*[sup -] [rho][sup +] decay channels and the B[sup 0] [yields] D*[sup -] a[sub 1][sup +] branching fraction, obtained using a partial reconstruction technique. These measurements serve as a test and validation of the procedures required to measure the combination of CKM Unitarity Triangle angles sin(2[beta] + [gamma]).

Book Measurement of the B0 Lifetime with Partially Reconstructed B0 D L u Decays

Download or read book Measurement of the B0 Lifetime with Partially Reconstructed B0 D L u Decays written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The B[sup 0] lifetime has been measured with a sample of 23 million B[bar B] pairs collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e[sup+]e[sup -] storage ring during 1999 and 2000. Events from the semileptonic decay B[sup 0][yields] D*[sup -][ell][sup+][nu][sub[ell]] have been selected with a partial reconstruction method in which only the charged lepton and the slow[pi] from the D*[sup -][yields][bar D][sup 0][pi][sup -] decay are reconstructed. The result is[tau][sub B][sup 0]= 1.529[+-] 0.012 (stat)[+-] 0.029 (syst) ps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lepton-Photon symposiums ? as represented by the contributions in this volume ? are among the most popular conferences in high energy physics since they give an in-depth snapshots of the status of the field as provided by leading experts. The volume covers the latest results on flavor factories, quantum chromodynamics (QCD), electroweak physics, dark matter searches, neutrino physics and cosmology, from a phenomenological point of view. It also offers a glimpse of the immediate future of the field through summaries on the status of the next generation of high energy accelerators and planned facilities for astroparticle physics. The review nature of the articles makes the volume particularly useful to students, as well as being of interest to established researches in high-energy physics and related fields.

Book Proceedings of the 31st International Conference on High Energy Physics ICHEP 2002

Download or read book Proceedings of the 31st International Conference on High Energy Physics ICHEP 2002 written by S. Bentvelsen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 1004 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first precision measurements on CP violation in the B system are reported. Both the BELLE and the BABAR collaboration presented, among others, results for sin 2ß with much improved accuracy. Results from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, SNO, also deserve to be mentioned. The convincing evidence of solar neutrino oscillations had been presented by SNO prior to the conference; a full presentation was given at the conference. An incredibly precise measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon is reported, a fresh result from the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Apart from these distinct physics highlights, there are also the first results from the new Tevatron run and from the relativistic heavy ion collider RHIC. Theorists write of our ever better understanding of the Standard Model and of what might lie beyond. Risky as it is to highlight only a couple of exciting subjects, it is merely meantto whet the appetite for further reading.
