Book Underlined While Reading 3

Download or read book Underlined While Reading 3 written by Sezai ARLI and published by Sezai ARLI. This book was released on with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was born in December 1954 or January 1955 (‘when the first snow fell’) as the third child of a Kurdish family living in a remote village of Eastern Turkey. My father died of tuberculosis at the age of 31 when I was six years old. My mother was 34, never married again, dedicated her life to her children. From the moment I learned how to read and write I became a passionate reader of the books; books of literature, books of history, books of travel, books of philosophy, books of memoirs, books of biographies, books of politics… This book contains some of the excerpts that I noted while reading. Excerpts of wisdom and reflection from Barack Obama to Haji Ali (Nurmadhar of Korphe Village in Karakoram) from Edward Gibbon to Abdul Sattar Edhi (Pakistani Philanthropist). Excerpts on life, on love, on humanity, on civilization, on courage, on art, on ideas, on faith, on democracy, on freedom, on nations, on education, on war, on peace... Just a few short examples: For only in death are we alone-Rabindranath Tagore *** Sir, that all who are happy, are equally happy, is not true. A peasant and a philosopher may be equally satisfied, but not equally happy. Happiness consists in the multiplicity of agreeable consciousness-Samuel Jonson *** Serious literature is no less of a life preserver, even if the society is all but oblivious of it-Philip Roth *** It bothers me a little that at 99 you’re going to die any minute, because I have a lot of other things I want to do-Delmer Berg Sezai Arli Doha, November 2020

Download or read book An Eye for An I written by Robert Spillane and published by Made For Success Publishing. This book was released on 2015-03-13 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt:

How can we gain insight into and mastery of ourselves? Entering the world of the great philosophers and engaging with them, we become aware of what we are capable of becoming. They speak to us of themselves and the good life and thereby offer the possibility for self-development.

While this sounds like psychology, it is what the ancient Greeks called moral philosophy and its main precept is 'know oneself'. To know oneself is to embrace one's personal power.

From Socrates to Sartre, from Plato to postmodernism, philosophers have important things to say about the personal power that underpins human existence. This book discusses ten philosophical perspectives, or worldviews, which present original ideas capable of evoking in us values that are guidelines for personal conduct. Harmonising knowledge, values and conduct maximises our personal power and thereby enables us to solve the practical and psychological problems of human existence, or overcome those that cannot be solved.

The philosophers discussed in this book embody ideas of considerable fascination and force which can change our lives by penetrating the illusions of appearance and the delusions of common sense. As philosophy is thinking critically about thinking, it is a liberating activity because philosophers confront us with our prejudices and arouse our curiosity without satisfying it.

They show us what they were and how philosophy inspired them to live productive lives. They did not seek disciples but encouraged others to philosophise with them.

We cannot escape from philosophy because we philosophise when we reflect critically on how well we are living.

Philosophy is, therefore, a meditation on who we are and what we can become: it is an eye for an I.

Download or read book Studies in Stoicism written by P. A. Brunt and published by Oxford University Press (UK). This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important volume fulfills one of Peter Brunt's (1917 - 2005) last wishes: a collection of his most important papers in the area of scholarship that had occupied him in his earliest years of research, and which largely absorbed his attention after his retirement from the Camden Chair of Roman History at Oxford University in 1982. Brunt was interested primarily in Stoicism in the Roman period, and his chief concern was the practical influence of its ethical teaching on political and social life. Although his investigations were historical, they required a complete mastery of the Stoic texts and doctrine. Basing his work almost entirely on the ancient sources, Brunt provides the most complete account and comparison available today not only of the ideas of the Roman Stoic moralists, but also of the political philosophy of the Greek founders of the Stoa. He believed that the ideas of the Stoics of the Roman period were essentially continuous with the thinking of the founders, and he did not accept that the concern with practical everyday morality in later Stoicism was a new development. Studies in Stoicism contains six unpublished and seven republished essays, the latter incorporating additions and changes which Brunt wished to be made. The papers have been integrated and arranged in roughly chronological order and by subject matter, with an accessible lecture to the Oxford Philological Society serving as Brunt's own introduction.
