Book A Curious Cat in a Dead Dog s Town

Download or read book A Curious Cat in a Dead Dog s Town written by Chip Weinert and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08-31 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Curious Cat in a Dead Dog’s Town By: Chip Weinert Private eye Mathew “Duke” Hazzard is a feline who’d rather sleep and surf than do anything resembling work. But when Ralph Bravo, the magnate and mastermind behind the Doggie Crunchies Empire, is found all four paws up—dead—only one cat in town has the wits to connect the dots and discover the killer. Think of it as Philip Marlowe meets Fritz the Cat. Set in the twin towns of CatsCamp and Dogstown that straddle the Beaver Butt River just as it meets the ocean, this tongue-in-cheek murder mystery takes you in and out of the surf zone and local taverns before culminating in a high-speed chase down the rugged Left Coast. In the meantime, Duke gets his share of scrapes—as any tomcat does—with his best friend Trapper, a big black lab born to surf; the gorgeous Gloria, dead Ralph’s young widow; Police Captain Ursalik, a big old grizzly counting his days till retirement; and the criminal de Katz brothers, a couple of ferocious felines who may just be mixed up in murder.

Book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time

Download or read book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time written by Mark Haddon and published by Anchor Canada. This book was released on 2009-02-24 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bestselling modern classic—both poignant and funny—narrated by a fifteen year old autistic savant obsessed with Sherlock Holmes, this dazzling novel weaves together an old-fashioned mystery, a contemporary coming-of-age story, and a fascinating excursion into a mind incapable of processing emotions. Christopher John Francis Boone knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. Although gifted with a superbly logical brain, Christopher is autistic. Everyday interactions and admonishments have little meaning for him. At fifteen, Christopher’s carefully constructed world falls apart when he finds his neighbour’s dog Wellington impaled on a garden fork, and he is initially blamed for the killing. Christopher decides that he will track down the real killer, and turns to his favourite fictional character, the impeccably logical Sherlock Holmes, for inspiration. But the investigation leads him down some unexpected paths and ultimately brings him face to face with the dissolution of his parents’ marriage. As Christopher tries to deal with the crisis within his own family, the narrative draws readers into the workings of Christopher’s mind. And herein lies the key to the brilliance of Mark Haddon’s choice of narrator: The most wrenching of emotional moments are chronicled by a boy who cannot fathom emotions. The effect is dazzling, making for one of the freshest debut in years: a comedy, a tearjerker, a mystery story, a novel of exceptional literary merit that is great fun to read.

Book A Curious Cat Wags a Fishy Tale

Download or read book A Curious Cat Wags a Fishy Tale written by Chip Weinert and published by Stratton Press. This book was released on 2020-04-09 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a parallel universe where humans evolved not only from apes, but from dogs, cats, bears, otters, and seals, to name a few, Matthew "Duke" Hazard is hired to solve a murder. Duke discovers, with the help from a friendly band of river otters, that a rogue gang of seals are stealing all the salmon and trout from the Beaver Butt River and selling them on the black market to a cartel of ruthless muskrats for use in their slave-labor lutefisk factories. Duke, a feline, who, like most cats, would rather curl into a ball in that sunny spot on the couch and take a nap, ends up being harassed--as well as helped--by the local government to expose a case of corruption that may have led to murder! The action takes place on the water and on the shores of the wild and scenic Beaver Butt River, which flows between the two towns of CatsCamp and Dogstown before emptying into the ocean. We learn about the fish and the fishing that are a major factor in the lives of both towns both commercially and recreationally. Along the way, we meet cast of wild creatures: Leo Phieu, an old one-eyed, fish-smelling Burmese who has inhaled his share of gasoline, paint, and fiberglass fumes over the years. We also meet his niece Faye, who has a crush on Duke that Duke does not return. And then there's Butch and Ginger Larson, owners of the feline weekly paper, the CatsCamp Distorter. There are otters, seals, and even a cameo from a pair of fly-fishing frogs! Plus, a few characters making an encore appearance from the first book in the series, A Curious Cat in a Dead Dog's Town, such as Duke's buddy Gibson, Police Captain Ursalik, and Duke's mother, who thinks Duke is lazy even by a cat's standards. Chip Weinert is a former newspaper and magazine writer, editor, and associate publisher as well as professional windsurfer. He lives (and surfs, windsurfs, fishes, and bikes) on Oregon's Rogue Coast with two crazy canines who think he's insane. Stay tuned for his next book in the Curious Cat series, A Curious Cat Goes over the Handlebars.

Download or read book From Jamestown to Texas written by Betty Smith Meischen and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-09-22 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rugged character and indomitable spirit of the early pioneers of Stephen F. Austins Texas colony had their roots in a turbulent, distant past. From the early 1600s, their courageous ancestors had pushed westward, leaving the European shores to carve out a new nation from the wilderness. They fled religious and political oppression in search of a better life in which freedom was of supreme importance. Many came with tales of their former struggles in Londonderry, Ireland during the great siege, of terrible massacres and clan rivalries in the times of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland. They vividly remembered the tribulations of Martin Luther and the deadly religious split with the Catholic Church. More recently, memories of their parents participation in the American Revolution, of dramatic, true life scenes such as depicted in the movie The Patriot filled their minds, their fathers having ridden along side of the wily Swamp Fox, Francis Marion. These pioneers associated themselves with men like Travis, Crockett, Houston and Andrew Jackson. Many of these early trailblazers were Scots-Irish and German immigrants. They were on a westward trek to grasp a special prize, to seal Americas Manifest Destiny. And that prize they sought was Texas. From Jamestown to Texas is the story of these intrepid pioneers and their ancestors who cleared and farmed the land, who fought the Indians, battled the elements, and carved out this wonderful country that we have today.
