Book Julius Caesar s Bellum Civile and the Composition of a New Reality

Download or read book Julius Caesar s Bellum Civile and the Composition of a New Reality written by Ayelet Peer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his Commentarii de Bello Civili Julius Caesar sought to re-invent his image and appear before his present and future readers in a way which he could control and at times manipulate. Offering a new interpretation of the Bellum Civile this book reveals the intricate literary world that Caesar creates using sophisticated techniques such as a studied choice of vocabulary, rearrangement of events, use of indirect speech, and more. Each of the three books of the work is examined independently to set out the gradual transformation of Caesar's literary persona, in step with his ascent in the 'real' world. By analysing the work from Caesar's viewpoint the author argues that by adroit presentation and manipulation of historical circumstances Caesar creates in his narrative a different reality, one in which his conduct is justified. The question of the res publica is also a key point of the volume, as it is in the Bellum Civile, and the author argues that Caesar purposely does not present himself as a Republican, contrary to commonly held views. Employing detailed philological analyses of Caesar's three books on the Civil War, this work significantly advances our understanding of Caesar as author and politician.

This is the chilling story of a more than two-year-long investigation into a dangerous criminal underworld where merciless syndicates will stop at nothing to attain their prize. It is a tale of greed, folly and corruption, and of an increasingly desperate battle to save the rhino – which has survived for more than 50 million years – from extinction. Killing for Profit is a meticulous, devastating and revelatory account of one of the world’s most secretive trades. It exposes poachers, gangsters, con men, mercenaries, killers, gunrunners, diplomats, government officials and other key players behind the slaughter. And it follows the bloody trail from the front lines of the rhino wars in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique to the medicine markets of Vietnam and the lair of a wildlife-trafficking kingpin on the banks of the Mekong River in Laos ...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A malicious newspaper ad points Inspector Heimrich to a killer in this whodunit from the coauthor of the “excellent” Mr. and Mrs. North mysteries (The New Yorker). Inspector M. L. Heimrich of the New York State Police may not have the flash of hard-boiled city detectives, but there’s no lead the intrepid investigator won’t follow until his every hunch is satisfied . . . An advertisement for an odd collection of items has been placed in the Van Brunt Citizen: a never-been-worn size ten wedding dress, a bay horse, and a .25 caliber Winchester rifle. At first glance these objects seem unrelated, but they all played a role in the accidental death of young heiress Virginia Gant the year prior. When the paper’s owner brings the matter to Inspector Heimrich, there’s really nothing that can be done. After all, however much the phony ads were in bad taste, their publication didn’t break any laws. But even though his hands are tied, Heimrich has a feeling there’s more to the story and begins his own quiet investigation. And when someone else connected to Gant ends up six feet under, it’s up to the resolute inspector to make the arrest of a killer headline news. A Risky Way to Kill is the 19th book in the Captain Heimrich Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

  • ISBN : 9780521580267

Download or read book Fighting for Rome written by John Henderson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-03-12 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in Fighting for Rome confront the traumatic disjunction between the militarist culture of classical Rome, with its heavy investment in valour, conquest and triumph, and the domination of its history by civil war, where Roman soldiers killed so many Romans for control of Rome. The essays gathered and rewritten here range across the literary forms (history, satire, lyric and epic) and work closely with the ancient texts (Appian and Julius Caesar; Horace; Lucan and Statius; Tacitus and Livy). Close reading and powerful translation communicate the ancient writers' efforts to grasp and respond to the Roman civil wars, and to their product, Roman terror under the Caesars. The book aims to bring to life strong reactions to a world order run by civil war.
