Book The Complete Works of W H Auden

Download or read book The Complete Works of W H Auden written by W. H. Auden and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains Auden and Christopher Isherwood's dramatic extravaganzas The Dog Beneath the Skin, the Ascent of F 6, and On the Frontier. It also includes the two versions of Paid on Both Sides--which are so different as to constitute two works--and Auden's satiric revue The Dance of Death. Two plays appear in print for the first time, Auden and Isherwood's The Enemies of a Bishop and Auden's The Chase. Also included are Auden's prose and verse written for doucmentary films, a cabaret sketch, and an unpublished radio script. Many of the texts include poems by the young Auden that have never been published before. The extensive historical and textual notes trace the complex history of the production and revision of these plays, including full texts and rewritten scenes. During the years when these works were created, Auden moved from a "poetry of isolation" to more expansive and public writing. After he left Oxford at age twenty-one, during the summer of 1928, he wrote the tragicomic charade Paid on Both Sides. During the next ten years, until he left England for America, he created the increasingly ambitious works for stage, film, and broadcast that appear in this volume. The most important of these plays were written in collaboration with Isherwood. As the world political situation worsened, Isherwood and Auden's style combined the energy of popular entertainment with the urgency of sacramental ritual. Edard Mendelson is Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University and the author of Early Auden (Viking). He is the editor of two volumes of Aduen's poetry, Collected Poems (Random House) and The English Auden (Random House). Originally published in 1988. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The comedy writer’s collection of “artifacts dedicated to controversial, silly and bonkers mishaps . . . [a] tribute to an alternative football history” (Daily Record). Andy Bollen has created a fantasy football museum to collect together a treasure trove of Scottish football exhibits that ranges from Jimmy Johnstone’s oar to Aggie the tea lady’s trolley. Learn why Puskás and Socrates should’ve been Scottish, the versatility of the pie and Napoleon’s links to Bovril and explore all the wonders of the game north of the Border—from Arthur Montford to the phone-in, Think Tanks, Buckfast, vanishing cream for referees, Twitter, VAR technology and flares (pyrotechnics, not 1970s attire). These exhibits distill the beauty of Scottish football into an entertaining volume that will make the perfect gift for any fan. Taking a satirical swipe at the beautifully flawed game, A History of Scottish Football in 100 Objects covers the mayhem, mavericks and bric-a-brac from the magic sponge, to the pie, hair weaves to tattoos. Bollen is the perfect curator: impeccably informed, passionate and insightful. “It’s not Hampden Babylon, but it’s very funny.” —Stuart Cosgrove, author of Hampden Babylon

Book Mammoth Book Of The World Cup

Download or read book Mammoth Book Of The World Cup written by Nick Holt and published by Robinson. This book was released on 2014-03-20 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An all-encompassing, chronological guide to football's World Cup, one of the world's few truly international events, in good time for the June 2018 kick-off in Russia. From its beginnings in 1930 to the modern all-singing, all-dancing self-styled 'greatest show on Earth', every tournament is covered with features on major stars and great games, as well as stories about some less celebrated names and quirky stats and intriguing essays. Holt's focus is very much on what takes place on the field, rather than how football is a mirror for economic corruption, or how a nation's style of play represents a profound statement about its people, or how a passion for football can lift underpaid, socially marginalised people out of poverty. From the best World Cups, in 1958 and 1970, to the worst, in 1962 and 2010, he looks behind the facts and the technical observations to the stories: the mysterious sins of omission; critical injuries to key players; and coaching U-turns. He explains how England's World Cup achievements under Sven-Göran Eriksson, far from being a national disgrace, were actually quite impressive, and looks at why Alf Ramsey didn't take Bobby Charlton off in 1970, but this is no parochial, jingoistic account. The book also asks why Brazil did not contribute in 1966, despite having won the previous two tournaments and going on to win the next one? Why the greatest players of their day did not always shine at the World Cup - George Best and Alfredo Di Stefano, for example, never even made it to the Finals. Why did Johann Cruyff not go to the 1978 World Cup? And why did one of Germany's greatest players never play in the World Cup? There are lots of tables, some filled with obvious, but necessary information, but others with more quirky observations. Alongside accounts of epic games, there are also brief biographies of all the great heroes of the World Cup.

Book The Game on New Year s Day

Download or read book The Game on New Year s Day written by Ted Brack and published by Black & White Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-11 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hibs and Hearts first locked horns on Christmas Day 1875. Hearts won 1-0 and even the most ardent Hibs fan would have to admit that the Tynecastle team has had the better of things in contests for local bragging rights over the 135 years which have followed. However, Hibs have had their moments too and the 6-2 derby win at Easter Road inspired by Franck Sauzee and Russell Latapy in October 2000 is a recent example of green and white triumph. No Hibs win over their local rivals, though, has come close to the epic 7-0 victory which was recorded by the great Turnbull's Tornadoes team on the first day of 1973. On the day that the United Kingdom entered the European Economic Community, Hibs carved out their own slice of history by vanquishing Hearts by seven clear goals on their own turf at Tynecastle. As the 40th anniversary of this iconic encounter approaches, Ted Brack describes the great match and the events which preceded it and tells the story of what has happened to the players who took part in it in the decades which have followed.Ted's book is written from his own experience and draws heavily on the first-hand memories and reminiscences of other supporters and the outstanding players who wore the green and white of Hibernian on that seminal day. Ted has spoken at length to players like ice cool goalkeeper Jim Herriot, world class full back John Brownlie, rock solid centre half Jim Black, classy and composed sweeper John Blackley, midfield maestros Alex Edwards and Alex Cropley, goal scorer supreme Jimmy O'Rourke and the peerless captain Pat Stanton. The players' honesty and insight make this book the definitive account of a match which still boasts the record competitive winning margin between Edinburgh's Big Two - Hearts supporters please note. "The Game on New Year's Day" is a must read for Hibees and should bring some cheer after their recent Cup disappointments.
