But a comparative study embracing all the aspects of the language of the Atharva-Veda has so far remained untouched. The present work is a grammatical study of the language of the fourth Veda. Book Hymns of the Atharvaveda Vol I

Download or read book Hymns of the Atharvaveda Vol I written by Ralph T.H. Griffith and published by Sanctum Books. This book was released on 101-01-01 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In India both the Rgveda and the Atharvaveda represent the earliest age in the history of sacred literature. However the spirit of the Atharvaveda breathes of a prehistoric stage. Some of its charms, witchcrafts and exorcism go back to Indo-European period. Dr. A. Kuhn has proved how some of its spells for curing bodily ailments agree in purpose and content as well as to some extent even in form, with certain old German, Lettic and Russian charms. Every evil thing in nature, from a drought to a fever or bad qualities of the human heart, is personified and made the object of terror-stricken propitiation, or of attempt at circumvention through witchcraft, or the instrument of harm to others through the same compelling nature. Here as there, worship takes the form of conjuring, not prayer; its ministers are sorcerers, not priests. The synonyms of the Atharvaveda like Atharvangirasah, Bhrgavangirasah and Brahmaveda speak of the development and the status it has enjoyed from time to time. In domestic sacrifices the Atharvan influence has been indelible. A deep study of the Atharvaveda and other Vedic texts unfolds new dimensions to modern sciences namely Comparative Philology, Comparative Mythology, Comparative Religion and Comparative Literature. Though Vedic literature the practical teaching of the classical languages in Europe has undergone an important change. The intellectual debt of Europe to India has thus been immense. It may perhaps become greater still in these post-independence years. Its special features include: a comparative study of the Saunaka and the Paippalada schools; and pointed references to the latest but lesser known researches expressed in Sanskrit language in the sixteen volumes Vedic Padanukramakosa by Acarya Dr. Vishva Bandhu Shastri and his distinguishes colleagues. This will evoke response from enlightened scholars for our prospective publications on other works.

Book Atharvaveda Paippal da K a Fifteen

Download or read book Atharvaveda Paippal da K a Fifteen written by Duccio Lelli and published by Gorgias Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its discovery and the initial efforts toward its critical edition, the Paippalādasaṃhitā of the Atharvaveda (PS) has attracted the attention of Vedic scholars and Indologists for several reasons. From a linguistic point of view, it attests archaic forms side by side with grammatical innovations, and constitutes a precious source for the study of the development of the earliest language. The transmission of the text itself is an intriguing subject that can shed more light on the formation and reciprocal relations of the Vedic schools. Moreover, the text contains important information about various rites and magical practices, hints about the oldest Indo-Iranian and Indo-European myths, mentions of medicinal herbs, plants and animals, references to peculiar features of the Vedic gods, descriptions of demoniac beings, objects of daily life and other realia. All of this makes the PS a text of inestimable value for the study of Indian language and culture.

Download or read book Greater Magadha written by Johannes Bronkhorst and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-04-30 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greater Magadha, roughly the eastern part of the Gangetic plain of northern India, has so far been looked upon as deeply indebted to Brahmanical culture. Religions such as Buddhism and Jainism are thought of as derived, in one way or another, from Vedic religion. This belief is defective in various respects. This book argues for the importance and independence of Greater Magadha as a cultural area until a date close to the beginning of the Common Era. In order to correct the incorrect notions, two types of questions are dealt with: questions pertaining to cultural and religious dependencies, and questions relating to chronology. As a result a modified picture arises that also has a bearing on the further development of Indian culture.
