Book excerpt: Cultural resources surveys of five areas along the proposed Hurricane Protection Levee on the east bank of St. Charles Parish, Louisiana, were conducted in October and November 1987. Fieldwork within these areas located three archaeological sites (16 SC 65, 16 SC 66 and 16 SC 67). All three sites represent late-nineteenth to early-twentieth century, field drainage stations. None of these properties are considered significant in terms of National Register criteria. A series of geological cores made along the project right-way were used to assess and reconstruct the recent geological history of the area. A previously identified natural levee feature, buried approximately 12 ft below the surface, was studied. Radiocarbon dates obtained on samples taken from the cores indicate this buried levee dates circa 2000 to 3400 B.P. and could contain archaeological sites. (fr).

Book excerpt: This report documents the second phase of the cultural resources inventory of the Bonnet Carre' Spillway, St. Charles Parish, Louisiana. Investigations conducted during this project focused on the portion of the spillway north of U.S. Highway 61. Ten separate survey items were examined during these investigations. Three items, representing high probability areas for historic cultural resources, were examined by intensive pedestrian survey and shovel testing. Two survey items, representing high probability areas for prehistoric remains, were examined by deep auger testing. The remaining five items, representing Previously disturbed areas or areas presently suffering disturbance, were examined through boat-based inspection of exposed banklines along these features. No archeological sites or significant historic resources were located during these investigations. The reported locations of three previously recorded sites near the project area, 16 SC 10, 16 SC 11, and 16 SC 12, were visited. Two of these sites, 16 SC 12, could not be relocated. (FR).

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of archeological survey and testing of a 15.2 x 285 m (1.1 ac) project area situated in southwestern Kenner, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. Field work was conducted for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Now Orleans District, prior to planned construction of a levee gap closure along the Jefferson/St. Charles Parish boundary. Field work consisted of pedestrian survey augmented by the systematic excavation of 48 shovel tests. During survey, one previously unrecorded archeological site, Universal Match sits (16JE219), was identified within the project area. This site consisted of remains associated with an early twentieth century house, and a contemporaneous train depot for the Orleans-Kenner Electric Railway Company. Two 1 x 1 m excavation units were placed within the site. Based on data collected during survey, it is apparent that the site has been damaged extensively; it lacks both archeological integrity and research potential. The site does not possess the quality of significance, as defined by National Register of Historic Places criteria. No additional testing of the Universal Match site (16JE219) is recommended.

Book excerpt: During February and March, 1989, a cultural resources survey of the V-levee segment of the West Bank-Hurricane Protection Project, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana was conducted. An Intensive pedestrian survey and shovel testing regime was done within the project corridor, an area of 345 acres. Two archeological sites, two landscape features, and three modern refuse loci are located within the the surveyed area. Brown's Sawmill (16JE217) is the remains of a mid-twentieth century sawmill. It is less than 50 years old, and it is not eligible for inclusion in the National Register; no further testing is recommended. Site 16JE218 consists of an intact shell midden adjacent to Bayou des Familles. Site 16JE218 is a significant site. The first landscape feature is a series of ten agricultural drainage ditches, and a small protection levee, associated with the 1867 - 1875 cultivation of sugarcane within Carter Plantation. The other is a segment of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century Barataria Road. Finally, three loci of modern refuse were identified. Neither the landscape features nor the modern refuse loci are significant cultural resources; no further work is recommended at them.
