More than 15% of the designated areas were investigated during a pedestrian survey which was complemented by limited subsurface testing. Three sites were recorded; a mound of probable aboriginal construction; the remnants of a historic structure; and an area where paleontological remains were recovered. The survey indicated that the potential for archeological sites is greater nearer, the Saline river, than in the areas surveyed. Book Cultural Resources Survey of Council Grove Lake Kansas

Download or read book Cultural Resources Survey of Council Grove Lake Kansas written by Patricia J. O'Brien and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From October of 1979 until May of 1980, an Executive Order 11593 Survey was conducted for cultural resources in Council Grove Lake. Data was compiled on 17 archeological sites which were previously reported and in addition, 13 new sites were discovered. Of these new sites 5 were prehistoric while 8 are historic; the earlier sites were prehistoric. One site, 14M0304--the William Young--is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Unfortunately because the prehistoric sites were mostly shallow and have been extensively plowed out or have been badly damaged or destroyed by construction activities associated with the Lake, no other prehistoric sites are proposed to be nominated to the Register. In addition, the historic sites are all too young--under 21 years--to be nominated to the Register. (Author).

Book A Souvenir History of Lincoln County Kansas Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Souvenir History of Lincoln County Kansas Classic Reprint written by Elizabeth N. Barr and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Souvenir History of Lincoln County, Kansas This book has been compiled from the written and verbal accounts of those who ought to know the history of Lincoln County. Personally I knew nothing of this history when I began gathering the material, and when stories conflicted I was not prejudiced to either opinion but tried in all possible ways to ascertain the actual facts In the case. I have interviewed most of the early settlers and those to whom I am most indebted are: J. J. Peate, Richard Clark, and Chalmer Smith of Beverly; John S. Strange, N. B. Rees, Anna C. Wait, Fred Erhardt, Adolph Roenigk, E. M. Harris, Martin Hendrickson, Daniel Day, Cris. Bernhardt, C. M. Heaton, Tone Bishop, Ogden Green, Myron Green of Lincoln; William Baird of Vesper; Mrs. Morgan and A. R. Buzick of Sylvan Grove. Those from a distance who have contributed letters and articles are: F. A. Schemerhorn, Eli Ziegler, and A. T. Biggs. Others have been kind enough to loan clippings. Among these clippings were articles by J. R. Mead, J. J. Peate, Thomas Strange, Washington Smith, Gen. Geo. A. Forsyth, also several important articles by unknown parties. Besides getting the statements of these people I have read the tiles of at least one newspaper from '73 down to date and searched the archives of the State Historical Society diligently and gleaned all I could from that source. A special vote of thanks is due the newspapers and others who have loaned cuts and pictures. I wish to make special mention of those who have advertised in this book. They are the fellows who are up-to-date and progressive or they wouldn't be here. And it is the man who is public spirited, liberal, and broad minded with whom you want to deal, not simply because he will do the best for the community but because he will do the best by you. As you read this book just notice who these men are. I have done my best to give a true account of the happenings of Lincoln County. I know there will be some mistakes, and I do not anticipate that everybody will agree with even that part of my story which is correct. If you do not agree with me do not ask me to change it now. If there is anything left out which you think ought to have been put in you should have spoken of it last summer. In case this book meets with your approval I shall be happy. In case it does not I refuse to worry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people would not consider north central Kansas’ Waconda Lake to be extraordinary. The lake, completed in 1969 by the federal Bureau of Reclamation for flood control, irrigation, and water supply purposes, sits amid a region known—when it is thought of at all—for agriculture and, perhaps to a few, as the home of "The World’s Largest Ball of Twine" (in nearby Cawker City). Yet, to the native people living in this region in the centuries before Anglo incursion, this was a place of great spiritual power and mystic significance. Waconda Spring, now beneath the waters of the lake, was held as sacred, a place where connection with the spirit world was possible. Nearby, a giant snake symbol carved into the earth by native peoples—likely the ancestors of today’s Wichitas—signified a similar place of reverence and totemic power. All that began to change on July 6, 1870, when Charles DeRudio, an officer in the 7th U.S. Cavalry who had served with George Armstrong Custer, purchased a tract on the north bank of the Solomon River—a tract that included Waconda Spring. DeRudio had little regard for the sacred properties of his acreage; instead, he viewed the mineral spring as a way to make money. In Holy Ground, Healing Water: Cultural Landscapes at Waconda Springs, Kansas, anthropologist Donald J. Blakeslee traces the usage and attendant meanings of this area, beginning with prehistoric sites dating between AD 1000 and 1250 and continuing to the present day. Addressing all the sites at Waconda Lake, regardless of age or cultural affiliation, Blakeslee tells a dramatic story that looks back from the humdrum present through the romantic haze of the nineteenth century to an older landscape, one that is more wonderful by far than what the modern imagination can conceive.
