Book International Perspectives on Pilgrimage Studies

Download or read book International Perspectives on Pilgrimage Studies written by John Eade and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-10 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although research on contemporary pilgrimage has expanded considerably since the early 1990s, the conversation has largely been dominated by Anglophone researchers in anthropology, ethnology, sociology, and religious studies from the United Kingdom, the United States, France and Northern Europe. This volume challenges the hegemony of Anglophone scholarship by considering what can be learned from different national, linguistic, religious and disciplinary traditions, with the aim of fostering a global exchange of ideas. The chapters outline contributions made to the study of pilgrimage from a variety of international and methodological contexts and discuss what the ‘metropolis’ can learn from these diverse perspectives. While the Anglophone study of pilgrimage has largely been centred on and located within anthropological contexts, in many other linguistic and academic traditions, areas such as folk studies, ethnology and economics have been highly influential. Contributors show that in many traditions the study of ‘folk’ beliefs and practices (often marginalized within the Anglophone world) has been regarded as an important and central area which contributes widely to the understanding of religion in general, and pilgrimage, specifically. As several chapters in this book indicate, ‘folk’ based studies have played an important role in developing different methodological orientations in Poland, Germany, Japan, Hungary, Italy, Ireland and England. With a highly international focus, this interdisciplinary volume aims to introduce new approaches to the study of pilgrimage and to transcend the boundary between center and periphery in this emerging discipline.

Download or read book I Tried written by Gyuszi Süto and published by Gyuszi Suto. This book was released on 2021-10 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The time is 1972 to 1990. The place is communist Romania, one of the satellite states of the almighty-albeit slowly decaying-Soviet Union. I Tried is a collection of stories that reflect the author's life from the tender age of ten through age 28. The 36 tales of street-soccer, beekeeping, abuse, brutality, chases, forced labor, love, secret police informants and revolution present a quilt-like collage of the life in communist Romania, a country ruled by Nicolae Ceausescu, one of the worst dictators of the 20th century. These intimate stories-in turn thrilling, funny, and sad-of everyday life under a communist regime offer the reader a glimpse of an almost unimaginable period of recent history. I Tried will take you on an emotional roller coaster and leave you filled with wonder and disbelief that such events could occur in our modern world.

Book Interwar Salzburg

Download or read book Interwar Salzburg written by Robert von Dassanowsky and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2024-02-08 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A long-overdue reassessment of post-1918 Salzburg as a distinct Austrian cultural hub that experimented in moving beyond war and empire into a modern, self-consciously inclusive, and international center for European culture. For over 300 years, Salzburg had its own legacy as a city-state at an international crossroads, less stratified than Europe's colonial capitals and seeking a political identity based in civic participation with its own economy and politics. After World War I, Salzburg became a refuge. Its urban and bucolic spaces staged encounters that had been brutally cut apart by the war; its deep-seated traditions of citizenship, art, and education guided its path. In Interwar Salzburg, contributors from around the globe recover an evolving but now lost vanguard of European culture, fostering not only new identities in visual and performing arts, film, music, and literature, but also a festival culture aimed at cultivating an inclusive public (not an international elite) and a civic culture sharing public institutions, sports, tourism, and a diverse spectrum of cultural identities serving a new European ideal.

Book Workaholic s Rehab

Download or read book Workaholic s Rehab written by Trevor Hawkins and published by Gem delos Santos. This book was released on 2015-12-28 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Admittedly the most common problem in todays workforce is too many are too lazy to move their butts and work! In some respects being workaholic is an admirable trait. But as with anything in life, even the good becomes a negative when uncontrolled. Although it's a admirable to take responsibility and work real hard to provide well for the family? We still need to take it in moderation. Too much and it will minimize the quality of life, relationships and health -- because every waking moment is just spent working! It is the goal of this book to help balance your work life and ensure you don't go overboard. It's understandable and commendable to take care of business but as long as you are not in absolute control -- as much as drug addicts are not really in control of their addictions to their vices, cigarettes, drugs, alcohol or spending every waking moment at work? It is a problem! Overlooked, underestimated, but a problem nonetheless.
