Book A Cruising Guide to Pudget Sound

Download or read book A Cruising Guide to Pudget Sound written by Migael Scherer and published by International Marine/Ragged Mountain Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Puget Sound is one of the largest and most attractive cruising grounds in North America, more varied by far than even beteran cruisers expect--great natural harbors, breathtaking scenery, and a mild climate that permits year-round cruising. Here is the first comprehensive boater's guide to the almost 2,000 miles of shoreline and more than 300 islands that lie between Washington's capital of Olympia and the Canadian border at Point Roberts, including the San Juans. Veteran Pacific Northwest cruiser and award-winning author Migael Scherer brings more than 20 years of Puget Sound sailing to this guide, offering intricate, hard-earned local knowledge of the approaches, anchorages, and facilities of hundreds of bays, harbors, and inlets, with annotated charts for many. Here also are insights into local history and attractions, and a rating system that details every harbor and anchorage, how and where to get ashore, and what facilities to expect. "A Cruising Guide to Puget Sound" shows you not only where to cruise but how to make your cruise safer and more enjoyable, with a detailed discussion of weather, tides, currents, and the effects of commercial shipping, logging, and fishing. Migael Scherer is a graceful, meticulous, and observant writer whose love and appreciation of all that Puget Sound offers rings clearly. Here is her personal tour. From Olympia through the San Juans to Point Roberts on the Canadian border and Port Angeles in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Puget Sound offers nearly 300 islands and some 2,000 miles of shoreline. Here is the definitive guide, including Tested piloting information, with comprehensive details on approaches, anchorages and moorage, getting ashore, and things to do Harbor and anchorage ratings, including beauty and interest, protection, and facilities-at-a-glance Advice on coping with tides and currents, weather, commercial traffic, log booms, and other navigational challenges Annotated chartlets Local history and seasonal highlights "Everything a yachtsman's pilot ought to be: shipshape and workmanlike in its approach, unusually well written, very thoughtfully researched. . . . I wish you'd put the price up to, say, $1,000, and thereby deter a few people from discovering the anchorages that until now have been quietly traded between friends."--Jonathan Raban "Simply, every local boater should have a dog-eared, well-thumbed copy of "A Cruising Guide to Puget Sound" as a permanent feature in the nautical library."--"48 Degrees North" "This would be a welcome addition to the library of any Puget Sound sail- or powerboat owner. It could well become a hit among landlubbers searching for that elusive Sound-side getaway."--"The Seattle Times"

Book Utopias on Puget Sound 1885 1915

Download or read book Utopias on Puget Sound 1885 1915 written by Charles Pierce LeWarne and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2002-07-01 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postmaster General James A Farleys famous toast to the forty-seven states and the soviet of Washington introduces and sets the tone for this study of Washington State radicalism. The states colorful reputation for radical movements was established in the 1920s and 1930s by free speech fights, strikes, strong labor organizations, and woman suffrage reforms. Charles LeWarne finds the roots of this radicalism in the communitarian experiments of the late nineteenth century. Through analyses of several of these experiments, LeWarne demonstrates that the influence of a coterie of liberals and radicals centered on Puget Sound in such communities as Home, Burley, Freeland, Equality, and Port Angeles was felt in the state long after the utopias they came to colonize had ceased to exist. Probably the most famous of the experiments was Home Colony on Joes Bay near Tacoma. From a nucleus of three families, Home grew to over two hundred residents and lasted for more than twenty years. Its reputation for anarchism and flamboyance contributed to a jail sentence conviction for one editor of the Home newspaper for publishing an editorial called The Nude and the Prudes. Readers interested in current social movements and lifestyles will find many enlightening parallels with recent communal attempts, particularly the rejection of traditional values and the belief in a perfectible world. Whatever the differences within individual colonies, the communitarian ideal has certain general characteristics that find their way into each of these attempts to form a perfect society. Historians will welcome this treatment of an important part of the social and cultural history of the area. The book contains a mine of previously scattered information on the subject. It is a delightful footnote to the history of the Puget Sound region.

News Flash! - Last 4th of July (2016) I was lounging on the finger dock next to my boat at Friday Harbor when a fellow boater approached me. He said, "I recognize - Kraken (Kraken's on the back cover)- I bought your book, and use it as one of my resources." We had a long enjoyable talk. He said he drove from Redding Ca. and taking my advice put in at Squalicum Harbor. Meeting a happy camper, made my day. Thanks! John News Flash! - (Dec 2016) We will have a new travel guide to the San Juans out soon. The new guide will be a "Land and Sea" guide and will be for all travelers.
