His purpose, at that time, was the careful study of those subjects which can be considered to the best advantage by the student as he stands upon the ground with which they are so inseparably connected; therefore, for his own profit, a correct record of each day's happenings was kept by the author. After his return home, he was prevailed upon to deliver a course of lectures to his people on successive Lord's Day evenings. The next request from his friends was for the publication of the substance of those addresses in the daily and weekly issues of the home papers. Last of all, many of those whose judgment he most highly valued, urged the importance of putting the letters in more permanent form. Therefore, responsibility for the placing of this little volume in your hands must be shared by the author's friends.
