Book A Crown for Our Queen Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Crown for Our Queen Classic Reprint written by Abram Joseph Ryan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Crown for Our Queen This book was intended as a "Month of Mary" It would have been published a few months ago had it not been for the illness of the author. However, better late than never, and by the clients of Mary it may be made to suit any month in the year. At the suggestion of a child of Mary, its title is "A Crown for Our Queen," in which the author has tried to intertwine his own humble thoughts and the remembered ideas of others with the holy truths of faith regarding Mary's place in the plans of God. Would that the crown were worthier of our Queen! The book substantially contains, in enlarged form, a a series of instructions given every Sunday evening, for several years, to the Children of Mary, of the Cathedral of Mobile, Alabama. Indeed, it belongs to them as much as it - does to the author. They inspired it he only wrote it. The book closes with some simple little legends published in French, with the approbation of the Bishop of Limoges, and kindly translated by a Child of Mary. The book is dogmatic as well as devotional, for what is devotion but the blooming and blossoming and fruitage of dogma? If it leads a single soul, through Mary, to Jesus, the author will feel that his humble work has Gods blessing. He asks for nothing more. Book The Crown of Wild Olive And the Queen of the Air Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Crown of Wild Olive And the Queen of the Air Classic Reprint written by John Ruskin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Crown of Wild Olive, And, the Queen of the Air John Ruskin John Ruskin was born in London, February 8, 1819. His parents were educated, well-to-do Scotch people. The father, a successful business man, and a member of a prosperous firm of wine merchants (Ruskin, Telford, and Domecq), was, nevertheless, a lover of good books and pictures, and gave his son ample opportunity for the cultivation and formation of literary style and artistic taste. His mother, an orthodox Scotch woman, looked carefully after the boy's religious training. In his last years Ruskin gave, in Pr terita, a detailed and unreserved account of the events of his childhood. It is done so exquisitely that one can do no better than to paraphrase some parts of his story. He tells (p. 16) how, at five or six years of age, he could pass his days contentedly in tracing the squares and comparing the colors in his carpet, examining the knots in the wood of the floor, or counting the bricks in the opposite houses. This pleasure, in simple occupation and loneliness, was doubtless due to the fact that he was allowed to have no toys, and was often whipped. While Ruskin was a small boy it was customary for him, at six p.m., punctually, to join his parents in the drawing room. Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book The Crown The Official Companion Volume 1

Download or read book The Crown The Official Companion Volume 1 written by Robert Lacey and published by Crown Archetype. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The official companion to the Emmy-winning Netflix drama chronicling the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, and starring Claire Foy and John Lithgow, The Crown by Peter Morgan, featuring additional historical background and beautifully reproduced archival photos and show stills Elizabeth Mountbatten never expected her father to die so suddenly, so young, leaving her with a throne to fill and a global institution to govern. Crowned at twenty-five, she was already a wife and mother as she began her journey towards becoming a queen. As Britain lifted itself out of the shadow of war, the new monarch faced her own challenges. Her mother doubted her marriage; her uncle-in-exile derided her abilities; her husband resented the sacrifice of his career and family name; and her rebellious sister embarked on a love affair that threatened the centuries-old links between the Church and the Crown. This is the story of how Elizabeth II drew on every ounce of resolve to ensure that the Crown always came out on top. Written by the show’s historical consultant, royal biographer Robert Lacey, and filled with beautifully reproduced archival photos and show stills, The Crown: The Official Companion: Volume 1 adds expert and in-depth detail to the events of the series, painting an intimate portrait of life inside Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street. Here is Elizabeth II as we’ve never seen her before.

Book Culturgeschichtliche Novellen

Download or read book Culturgeschichtliche Novellen written by W. H. Riehl and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Days of Queen Elizabeth OF all the sovereigns that have worn the crown of England, Queen Elizabeth is the most puz zling, the most fascinating, the most blindly praised, and the most unjustly blamed. To make lists of her faults and virtues is easy. One may say with little fear of contradiction that her in tellect was magnificent and her vanity almost in credibly childish; that she was at one time the most outspoken of women, at another the most untruthful; that on one occasion she would mani fest a dignity thalz was truly sovereign, while on another the rudeness; of filler: manners was un worthy oi even the ageein which she lived. Some times she was the strongest oi these strong, some times the weakest oi the weak. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Crown Lost and Restored At first man possessed a limited regality. Dominion was given unto him. Nature, through out its animate tribes, and partly Within its inani mate realm, recognized him as its lord. For him the seasons revolved, seed-time and harvest came in their appointed place, the sunshine and the Shower bathed the world, and all things were in excellent order, peace, and beautiful harmony. To him, as to a monarch, the earth, the air and the waters yielded their tribute, and his revenue was royal. With erect form, with noble front, with the port of a prince, he moved in his wide domain, with no one to dispute his title or to deny him homage. God had put the crown upon his head. Man was king! Book excerpt: A princess isn’t supposed to fall for an evil sorceress. But in this “bewitching and fascinating” (Tamora Pierce) retelling of “Sleeping Beauty,” true love is more than a simple fairy tale. “Walter’s spellbinding debut is for all the queer girls and women who’ve been told to keep their gifts hidden and for those yearning to defy gravity.”—O: The Oprah Magazine Once upon a time, there was a wicked fairy who, in an act of vengeance, cursed a line of princesses to die. A curse that could only be broken by true love’s kiss. You’ve heard this before, haven’t you? The handsome prince. The happily ever after. Utter nonsense. Let me tell you, no one in Briar actually cares about what happens to its princesses. Not the way they care about their jewels and elaborate parties and charm-granting elixirs. I thought I didn’t care, either. Until I met her. Princess Aurora. The last heir to Briar’s throne. Kind. Gracious. The future queen her realm needs. One who isn’t bothered that I am Alyce, the Dark Grace, abhorred and feared for the mysterious dark magic that runs in my veins. Humiliated and shamed by the same nobles who pay me to bottle hexes and then brand me a monster. Aurora says I should be proud of my gifts. That she . . . cares for me. Even though a power like mine was responsible for her curse. But with less than a year until that curse will kill her, any future I might see with Aurora is swiftly disintegrating—and she can’t stand to kiss yet another insipid prince. I want to help her. If my power began her curse, perhaps it’s what can lift it. Perhaps together we could forge a new world. Nonsense again. Because we all know how this story ends, don’t we? Aurora is the beautiful princess. And I— I am the villain. Book One of the Malice Duology

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Historical Account of the Rise and Development of Presbyterianism in Scotland Throughout the whole history of the Reformed Church in Scotland one of the most outstanding features will be found to be the overwhelming desire to maintain the independence of the Church from all secular control, and the most characteristic feature of the disputes which went on during the reigns of the Stewart Kings (especially James VI and I, and Charles I), was the failure of those Monarchs to appreciate the Scottish sentiments Of Patriotism, Protestantism and Freedom.
