They are self-organized, rapidly deployable and require no fixed infrastructure. They are quickly becoming an important part of our modern communication systems with a wide range of applications like personal communications, gaming, military, disaster relief operations, environment monitoring and more. Transmission of data like voice and video has become increasingly popular for such networks. These applications require strict end-to-end delay constraints on data delivery, requiring speedy transmissions by wireless nodes. Various transmission schemes have been proposed to deal with the delay parameter by implementing smart routing techniques, using more power to guarantee delivery, etc. But for battery powered wireless nodes, minimizing energy consumption is of supreme importance. In absence of strategic transmission schemes the energy consumption of such nodes transmitting delay critical data is very high. Minimizing energy consumption without affecting communication activities is crucial to prolong the lifetime and improve robustness of the network. The power-delay trade-off is hence an important factor in designing the transmission schemes for such networks. Most of the techniques proposed to deal with this trade-off follow the layered approach of the OSI model, which was primarily created with a wired architecture in mind. Characteristics such as absence of a central authority, links subject to multiple access, fading, interference and limited power availability exacerbate the variance of network conditions and bring greater challenges for multimedia delivery. This situation causes interdependencies across the network layers, unlike their wire-line counterparts. Recent studies indicate that power management for ad-hoc networks can be significantly improved using a cross-layer design in which different layers of the OSI stack are jointly optimized for performance. Our approach discusses a cross layer collaboration achieved by a synergy between Application, MAC and PHY layers to serve delay critical applications energy efficiently. We propose a data transmission scheme based upon the channel condition, the power constraint of an individual node and the delay constraint of the data that is being transmitted. We formulate an optimization problem and solve it using dynamic programming techniques for calculating the optimal transmission policy. We provide Matlab simulation results along with simulations performed on the Ns2 network simulator to study the energy-delay tradeoffs in a delay constrained ad hoc network environment. Additionally, we compare the benefits of our transmission policy to a scheme without the benefits of cross-layer network parameter information.

The potential for deployment of such networks exists in many scenarios ranging from civil and construction engineering, disaster relief to sensor networks and military applications. The IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) is the dominant MAC (layer) protocol for wireless ad hoc networks. Though the DCF scheme has survived the test of time, it still has its characteristic flaws namely the hidden and exposed terminal problems. Various protocols have been suggested to address these problems thereby leading to an overall increase in network throughput. Some of the popular protocols involve adjusting the carrier sensing threshold, replacing the omni directional antennas with directional antennas and intelligent calibration of transmission power. Studies have shown that directional antennas offer numerous advantages over omni directional antennas and thus has the potential to enhance the performance of ad hoc networks. For one, directional antennas have the ability to streamline their power in the direction of the receiver thereby offering longer transmission and reception ranges for the same amount of power. MAC layer protocols specifically designed to support such directional transmission and reception has been a current active area of research. Most of these protocols consider directional transmission under the assumption that the communication range of omni and directional antennas are the same. Apparently this assumption is not supported in any realistic situation. Moreover, the scientific community has not researched in depth the effect of topology on power consumption in ad hoc networks. In this thesis, we propose a cross-layer power optimization scheme for wireless ad hoc networks. The novelty of our work lies in the fact that we exploit the knowledge of the network topology to dynamically calibrate transmission power. The information about the network topology is retrieved from the Network Layer. Specifically, we consider three different network topologies -- (i) a sparse topology, (ii) a dense topology and a (iii) clusterbased topology. The MAC layer implements a dynamic power control scheme which regulates the transmission power of a transmitting node based on the node density at the receiver's end. In addition a transmitting node can adjust its own transmission power to the optimal level if the SINR value at the receiving node is known. Our cross-layer power control algorithm takes the above fact into account. Extensive simulation in NS2 shows that in all the three topologies our cross layer power control scheme (use of directional antennas with power control) leads to prolonged network lifetime and significantly increases the system throughput.

Book excerpt: Information flow in a telecommunication network is accomplished through the interaction of mechanisms at various design layers with the end goal of supporting the information exchange needs of the applications. In wireless networks in particular, the different layers interact in a nontrivial manner in order to support information transfer. In this text we will present abstract models that capture the cross-layer interaction from the physical to transport layer in wireless network architectures including cellular, ad-hoc and sensor networks as well as hybrid wireless-wireline. The model allows for arbitrary network topologies as well as traffic forwarding modes, including datagrams and virtual circuits. Furthermore the time varying nature of a wireless network, due either to fading channels or to changing connectivity due to mobility, is adequately captured in our model to allow for state dependent network control policies. Quantitative performance measures that capture the quality of service requirements in these systems depending on the supported applications are discussed, including throughput maximization, energy consumption minimization, rate utility function maximization as well as general performance functionals. Cross-layer control algorithms with optimal or suboptimal performance with respect to the above measures are presented and analyzed. A detailed exposition of the related analysis and design techniques is provided.

For specialized applications such as, military operations, search-and-rescue missions, security and surveillance, patient monitoring, hazardous material monitoring, 4G (4th Generation) coverage extension, and rural communication; ad hoc networks provide an intelligent, robust, flexible and cost effective solution for the wireless communication needs. As in centralized wireless systems, ad hoc networks are also expected to support high data rates, low delays, and large node density in addition to many other QoS (Quality of Service) requirements. However, due to unique ad hoc network characteristics, spectrum scarcity, computational limit of current state-of-the-art technology, power consumption, and memory; meeting QoS requirements is very challenging in ad hoc networks. Studies have shown cross layer to be very effective in enhancing QoS performance under spectrum scarcity and other constraints. In this dissertation, our main goal is to enhance performance (e.g., throughput, delay, scalability, fairness) by developing novel cross layer techniques in single-hop single channel general ad hoc networks. Our dissertation mainly consists of three main sections. In the first section, we identify major challenges intrinsic to ad hoc networks that affect QoS performance under spectrum constraint (i.e., single channel). In the later parts of the dissertation, we investigate and propose novel distributed techniques for ad hoc networks to tackle identified challenges. Different from our main goal, albeit closely related; in the first section we propose a conceptual cross layer frame work for interaction control and coordination. In this context, we identify various functional blocks, and show through simulations that global and local perturbations through parametric correlation can be used for performance optimization.
