Book A Cross Cultural Comparison of Mathematics Achievement

Download or read book A Cross Cultural Comparison of Mathematics Achievement written by Betül Yayan and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, there has been a growing interest for the international comparative studies in education area in all over the world. Since mathematics opens the doors of careers and provides knowledge to compete in a technological economy, up to now many researchers have consistently tried to determine the determinants of mathematics achievement. Thus, this book focused on determining the factors affecting mathematics achievement of students participated in TIMSS-R and comparing these factors across three different countries participated in TIMSS-R project. In the book, a model based on the related literature was proposed and afterwards it was tested for each country separately. Finally, the models were discussed by focusing on the similarities and the differences. The book provides illuminating data that may help to overview and rethink of educational practices especially in mathematics teaching and learning from a large-scale comparative perspective. Teachers may gain valuable insights with regard to mathematics teaching and learning. Moreover, the book encourages the researchers for conducting subsequent replication and extension studies within and across different cultures.

Book A Cross Cultural Comparison of Parental Expectations for the Mathematics Achievement of Their Secondary School Students

Download or read book A Cross Cultural Comparison of Parental Expectations for the Mathematics Achievement of Their Secondary School Students written by Daya Weerasinghe and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents results from a survey of 80 parents and 120 secondary school students in Australia. Many parents report that their children put in all their effort into mathematics education but they believe that their children can do better if they try harder. This paradox is more evident among parents from Asian-Australian backgrounds compared to parents from other backgrounds who also report having high expectations in mathematics education, which is not the common perception in Australian media and society.

Book Cross Cultural Comparison of Rural Education Practice in China Taiwan and the United States

Download or read book Cross Cultural Comparison of Rural Education Practice in China Taiwan and the United States written by Jane Benjamin and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to compare the rural education practices of China, Taiwan, Canada and the United States. International comparisons of mathematics achievement find that students in Asian countries outperform those from the USA. Excluded from these studies, however, are students from rural areas in China. This study compares the math abilities of 272 selectively chosen 5th grade students from rural, central China, 361 students from rural, northern Taiwan and 95 students from rural, central Pennsylvania. The test instrument was the same as used in previous China vs. USA comparisons and focused on four subtopics: computation, number concepts, geometry and problem solving. The results showed that rural Chinese and Taiwanese students outperformed similar American students in the area of mathematics achievement. The rural Chinese and Taiwanese students were also found to be more focused on school and academics and less on social aspects of school life. Their parents held higher expectations for them to do well in school. However, these cultural differences were not able to explain away the overall math achievement gap among the Chinese, Taiwanese and American students. It is recommended that further study be conducted to explore possible factors that contribute to different math achievement among the countries by interviewing students, teachers, and the parents. Appended is: Math Achievement Test and Questionnaire. (Contains 8 tables.).

Book What Matters Research Trends in International Comparative Studies in Mathematics Education

Download or read book What Matters Research Trends in International Comparative Studies in Mathematics Education written by Ji-Won Son and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-03 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a unique international comparative perspective on diverse issues and practices in mathematics education between and among the US and five high-performing TIMSS education systems, Japan, China, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan. The book offers multiple perspectives on the important factors that contribute to mathematics teaching and learning in different educational systems and cultural contexts. Using large scale data generated by numerous international comparative studies, the book analyzes and provides context for various methodological perspectives. The book raises compelling questions and issues for mathematics education researchers, leading to a critical examination of what can be learned from other education systems. Authors address four major research perspectives by critically examining cross-national similarities and differences, such as research on the influence of curriculum on student learning; research on institutional systems of mathematics teacher education; research on improving teacher knowledge and pedagogical approaches; and research using large-scale data. This collection of perspectives serves as a foundation for reviewing and analyzing the international comparative studies introduced in the book.

Book A Republic of Equals

Download or read book A Republic of Equals written by Jonathan Rothwell and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this provocative book, economist Jonathan Rothwell draws on the latest empirical evidence from across the social sciences to demonstrate how rich democracies have allowed racial politics and the interests of those at the top to subordinate justice. He looks at the rise of nationalism in Europe and the United States, revealing how this trend overlaps with racial prejudice and is related to mounting frustration with a political status quo that thrives on income inequality and inefficient markets. But economic differences are by no means inevitable. Differences in group status by race and ethnicity are dynamic and have reversed themselves across continents and within countries. Inequalities persist between races in the United States because Black Americans are denied equal access to markets and public services. Meanwhile, elite professional associations carve out privileged market status for their members, leading to compensation in excess of their skills.

Book Basic and Applied Perspectives on Learning Cognition and Development

Download or read book Basic and Applied Perspectives on Learning Cognition and Development written by Charles A. Nelson and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although current views of cognitive development owe a great deal to Jean Piaget, this field has undergone profound change in the years since Piaget's death. This can be witnessed both in the influence connectionist and dynamical system models have exerted on theories of cognition and language, and in how basic work in cognitive development has begun to influence those who work in applied (e.g., educational) settings. This volume brings together an eclectic group of distinguished experts who collectively represent the full spectrum of basic to applied aspects of cognitive development. This book begins with chapters on cognition and language that represent the current Zeitgeist in cognitive science approaches to cognitive development broadly defined. Following a brief commentary on this work, the next section turns to more applied issues. Although the focus here is on arithmetic learning, the research programs described have profound implications for virtually all aspects of education and learning. The last chapter views cognitive development from the perspective of ethology and evolutionary biology, and in so doing provides a theoretical perspective that is novel and in some ways, prescient: specifically, how can our views of cognition incorporate recent work in biology?
