Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to analyze the Test of Science Related Attitudes (TOSRA; Fraser, 1981) for use with a Chinese population ranging in ages from 11-77. The TOSRA measures seven scales with seventy Likert-type items. This study analyzes the reliability and validity of this instrument with data from participants in Beijing, China. Results show that the TOSRA can be used with post-secondary participants, but some modifications are recommended based on respondents' pattern of skipped questions (Enjoyment of Science Lessons scale), cultural sensitivity (Social Implications of Science scale), and construct bias (Adoption of Scientific Attitudes scale). For use with Chinese populations, only four scales are recommended: Attitude to Scientific Inquiry, Career Interest in Science, Normality of Scientists, and Leisure Interest in Science. The Adoption of Scientific Attitudes scale should be used with caution. We recommend more research on the ASA_09 item and possible construct bias for the ASA scale before administration with this population.

This authority is as much a matter of image and perceived legitimacy as of statutory guarantee. However, while authority can be charismatic, based on tradition or based on competence, we would assume that science aims to be an authority of competence. To what extent does science have the last word, or stand above opinion on public issues? This Indo-European led collaboration aims to map the cultural authority of science, and to construct a system of indicators to observe this ‘science culture’ based on artefacts (science news analysis) and espoused beliefs and evaluations (public attitude data). Indeed, through a series of studies the authors examine the cultural authority of science in light of the challenges posed by European, Asian, African and American developments and debates. In particular, two main ideas are examined: the ‘Lighthouse’ model, whereby science is shining into a stormy sea of ignorance and mistrust; and the ‘Bungee Jump’ model, which demonstrates how science occasionally experiences a rough ride against a backdrop of goodwill. Book excerpt: Against the background of NATO's Istanbul conference of 1971 (Cronbach and Drenth, 1972), the Kingston conference shows that great progress has been made by the community of cross-cultural psychologists. The progress is as much in the psychology of the investigators as in the investigations being reported. In 1971 the investigators were mostly strangers to each other. Behind their reports lay radically different field experiences, disparate research traditions, and mutually contradictory social ideals. Istanbul was not a Tower of Babel, but participants did speak past each other. Now a community exists, thanks to the meetings of NATO and the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology, to flourishing journals, and the Triandis et a1. (1980) Handbook. The members tend to know each other, can anticipate how their formu lations will fallon the ears of others, and accept superficially divergent approaches as making up a collective enterprise. Ten years ago there was open conflict between those who con fronted exotic peoples with traditional tests and applied tradi tional interpretations to the responses, and the relativists who insisted that tasks, test taking, and interpretation cannot be "standardized" in the ways that matter. Today's investigators are conscious of the need to revalidate tasks carried into alien settings; they often prefer to redesign the mode of presentation and to attune the subject to test taking. They face the diffi culties squarely and recognize that even the best means of coping are only partially successful.
