Book A Cross Cultural Analysis of Help Seeking for Symptoms of Depression in Japanese Primary School Teachers

Download or read book A Cross Cultural Analysis of Help Seeking for Symptoms of Depression in Japanese Primary School Teachers written by Elijah W. Bullard and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This cross-cultural study investigates help-seeking for depression among Japanese primary school teachers. Help-seeking for depressive symptoms is examined quantitatively by administering the Help-Seeking Scale for Depression among participants. In addition, this study qualitatively examines the help-seeking pathways of participants according to Kleinman's explanatory model of help-seeking. The objective of the study was to determine possible motivators for Japanese and other Asian people to seek professional help for symptoms of mental illness. The participants consisted of 71 Japanese school teachers from four primary schools located in the Kansai region of Japan. Participants' conceptualizations of depression were assessed using the Help-Seeking Scale for Depression (HSSD) after reading a vignette describing depressive symptoms. Participants' perceived severity of depressive symptoms (hypothesis 1) and prior therapy/counseling experience (hypothesis 2) significantly predicted professional help-seeking. The prevalence of depression was significantly higher in female participants (hypothesis 3); results indicating prevalence were non-significant for males. Hypotheses 1 and 2 were supported at p

Book Mental Health Challenges Facing Contemporary Japanese Society

Download or read book Mental Health Challenges Facing Contemporary Japanese Society written by Yuko Kawanishi and published by Global Oriental. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the profound question of mental malaise in its many forms in contemporary Japanese society, focusing on three main areas: work, family and youth. The purpose is to provide an analytical, critical account of the social psychological state of the Japanese today, as well as to present possible measures that could contribute to positive outcomes. Following the boom and bust years of the Japanese economy in the 1980s and 1990s, Japanese society was faced with the burden of rapid change and adjustment resulting in a significant increase in psychological and personality disorders at a level unknown in the past. These include karo-jisatsu (suicide by overwork), sekkusu-resu (sexless marriage), kateinairikon (in house divorce) and hikikomori (complete social withdrawal). This study will be widely welcomed by sociologists, psychologists and mental health professionals interested in the interconnectedness of culture and social structure, personality and psychopathology, and the historical development of these issues. It also offers valuable insight into questions relating to cross-cultural understanding.

Book Cultural Context and Social Healing

Download or read book Cultural Context and Social Healing written by Austen Matsui and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describing individual differences in help-seeking is crucial for developing a culturallycontextualized understanding of help-seeking trends in Japan. One measure used to address this need is the Help-Seeking Style Scale (Nagai, 2013). Past research demonstrates that help-seeking style is predictive of actual help-seeking behavior, but less is known about the relationship between help-seeking style and psychological distress. This meta-analytic dissertation assesses the predictive value of the three help-seeking style subscales and draws cross-group comparisons for the relationship between help-seeking style and distress. Three separate meta-analyses were performed with a dataset of eight studies, and a second dataset of four studies was used in a network meta-analysis. Findings suggested that avoidant help-seeking predicts greater distress, and that this relationship is stronger for women than for men. Self-directed help-seeking was an inconsistent predictor of distress. Excessive help-seeking was a poor predictor of distress in the first dataset, but the excessive help-seeking group was more distressed than the self-directed help-seeking group in the second dataset. Implications and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers ways to resolve the imbalance between the demand and supply of mental health services. Treatment services in most countries reach only a minority of people identified as suffering from a mental disorder. Few countries can provide adequate health services for all the mentally ill, yet none has developed a rational system to decide who should be treated. The questions are clear. Could we develop a staged treatment process to reach all in need? If not, how do we decide who to treat? What should the criteria be for deployment of scarce treatment resources? How do we determine such criteria? What are the ethical implications of applying such criteria? In this pioneering work, an international team of eminent psychiatrists, epidemiologists, health administrators, economists and health planners examine these questions. The result will inform and encourage all concerned with the equitable provision of mental health care.
