Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled "A Critical Study of Yishi Yuyan" Submitted by Tao Ching Sin for the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in August 2007 This thesis studies a Chinese rendition of Aesop's Fables in nineteenth century China. Yishi Yuyan, known in English as Esop's Fables: written in Chinese by the Learned Mun Mooy Seen-Shang, and compiled in their present form (with a free and a literal translation) by his pupil Sloth, was published amid the Opium War in 1840. The work, as stated in the preface, was meant to be a primer for English learners of Chinese, but it acquired at the same time a wide local readership despite being censored by the Chinese authority soon after publication and listed in the Index Expurgatorius. Firmly shunning the sterile dichotomist notion of 'linguistic versus cultural translation', the present study will explore more comprehensively the rendition as a converse between two distinct cultures in their early encounter by comparative textual analyses and a probe into the cultural intricacies behind the practice of translation. It will establish that the amateurish collaboration between the 'foreign devil' and his 'Chinese helper', as it happened so often then, was the best means available toward some salubrious degree of intercultural understanding, with their respective 'horizons' inevitably predetermining the composition of the work. The purpose, and hence the core value of this thesis, is to exposit the complexity of perception and reception of the self and the other by dissimilar cultures as refracted in the translation. This book collects and analyses corpora from news articles in the two most widely read newspapers in China and the UK. Corpus techniques including frequency and keyness are merged with methods associated with critical discourse analysis particularly investigation of social context. This book shows that there is a wide range of possible discursive constructions of terrorism in the media. Such different perspectives are likely to shape national or even global opinion on how to tackle terrorism.

Book excerpt: This book explored interpreters’ role when interpreting for Chinese government press conference and discovered the role deviation of conference interpreters in Chinese–English conference interpreting, by taking corpus-based approach to analyze hedges in interpreting discourse. So far, the discovery of role deviation for conference interpreters in this book is relevantly fresh in conceptual, empirical, and methodological aspects, against the background that conference interpreters are traditionally assumed to be invisible and passive “non-person.” Arguably, this book revisited and renewed the concept of interpreters’ role, offered a role theory-based theoretical framework in some potential issues in future studies, designed a novel empirical route by using hedges as the intervening points to gain insight into interpreters’ role, and applied Python-a new natural language processing programming in data extraction. Thus, this book is believed to contribute some new conceptual, theoretical as well as methodological significance to the future studies on interpreters’ role and performance. This book is intended to act as a useful reference for scholars, practitioners, interpreters, graduate and advanced undergraduate students, and anyone who shows interest in interpreters’ role and performance, corpus-based interpreting product.

In the post-handover, post-hangover years, the circulation, reverberation and reception of cultural symbols, old and new, such as the King of Kowloon, Song Emperor’s Terrace, and Lion Rock have revealed the multifaceted appearances and connotations of Hong Kong’s ‘local’. At the intersections between real-life events, cultural production and consumption and multiple voices, the book extracts and examines the local relations between the inhabitants of the territory and the human and nonhuman agencies that stand or that have once stood for Hong Kong across time and through space. Book excerpt: Translated fiction has largely been under-theorized, if not altogether ignored, in literary studies. Though widely consumed, translated novels are still considered secondary versions of foreign masterpieces. Readers, Reading and Reception of Translated Fiction in Chinese recognizes that translated novels are distinct from non-translated novels, just as they are distinct from the originals from which they are derived, but they are neither secondary nor inferior. They provide different models of reality; they are split apart by two languages, two cultures and two literary systems; and they are characterized by cultural hybridity, double voicing and multiple intertextualities. With the continued popularity of translated fiction, questions related to its reading and reception take on increasing significance. Chan draws on insights from textual and narratological studies to unravel the processes through which readers interact with translated fiction. Moving from individual readings to collective reception, he considers how lay Chinese readers, as a community, 'received' translated British fiction at specific historical moments during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Case studies discussed include translations of stream-of-consciousness novels, fantasy fiction and postmodern works. In addition to lay readers, two further kinds of reader with bilingual facility are examined: the way critics and historians approach translated fiction is investigated from structuralist and poststrcuturalist perspectives. A range of novels by well-known British authors constitute the core of the study, including novels by Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, D.H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, John Fowles, Helen Fielding and J.K. Rowling.
