Download or read book Crop Post Harvest Science and Technology Volume 1 written by Peter Golob and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World-wide losses of crops, post-harvest, through microbial action, pests, diseases and other types of spoilage amount to millions oftons every year. This essential handbook is the first in athree-volume series which covers all factors affecting post-harvestquality of all major fruits, vegetables, cereals and other crops.Compiled by members of the world-renowned Natural ResourcesInstitute at the University of Greenwich, Chatham, UK, thecomprehensive contents of this landmark publication encourageinteractions between each sector of the agricultural community inorder to improve food security, food safety and food quality intoday’s global atmosphere. Through the carefully compiled and edited chapters, internationally respected authors discuss ways to improve harvestyield and quality, drawing on their many years’ practicalexperience and the latest research findings, applications andmethodologies. Subjects covered include: an introduction to thesystems used in post-harvest agricultural processes, physical andbiological factors affecting post-harvest commodities, storageissues, pest management, food processing and preservation, foodsystems, the latest research and assimilation of this work, andcurrent trade and international agreements. An invaluable glossaryshowing important pests, pathogens and plants is alsoincluded. Crop Post-Harvest: Science and Technology Volume 1: Principlesand Practice is a must-have reference book which offers the readeran overview of the globalisation of post-harvest science, technology, economics, and the development of the storage andhandling of perishable and durable products. Volumes 2 and 3 willgo on to explore durables and perishables individually in moredetail, with many case studies taken from around the globe. This 3-volume work is the standard handbook and reference forall professionals involved in the harvesting, shipping, storage andprocessing of crops, including agricultural and plant scientists, food scientists and technologists, microbiologists, plantpathologists, entomologists and all post harvest, shipping andstorage consultants. Libraries in all universities and researchestablishments where these subjects are studied and taught shouldhave multiple copies on their shelves

Book Post harvest losses in rural urban value chains Evidence from Ethiopia

Download or read book Post harvest losses in rural urban value chains Evidence from Ethiopia written by Minten, Bart and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2019-09-12 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study post-harvest losses (PHL) in important and rapidly growing rural-urban value chains in Ethiopia. We analyze self-reported PHL from different value chain agents – farmers, wholesale traders, processors, and retailers – based on unique large-scale data sets for two major commercial commodities, the storable staple teff and the perishable liquid milk. PHL in the most prevalent value chain pathways for teff and milk amount to between 2.2 and 3.3 percent and 2.1 and 4.3 percent of total produced quantities, respectively. We complement these findings with primary data from urban food retailers for more than 4,000 commodities. Estimates of PHL from this research overall are found to be significantly lower than is commonly assumed. We further find that the emerging modern retail sector in Ethiopia is characterized by half the level of PHL than are observed in the traditional retail sector. This is likely due to more stringent quality requirements at procurement, sales of more packaged – and therefore better protected – commodities, and better refrigeration, storage, and sales facilities. The further expected expansion of modern retail in these settings should likely lead to a lowering of PHL in food value chains, at least at the retail level.

Book Stored Grain Ecosystems

Download or read book Stored Grain Ecosystems written by Digvir S. Jayas and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-10-20 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work takes a multidisciplinary approach to grain storage research, applying knowledge from the fields of biology, cereal chemistry, economics, engineering, mathematical modelling and toxicology to the study of the complex interactions among physical and biological variables in stored-grain bulks that cause the deterioration of stored grain. Details the prevention and control of pests and contaminants.

Book How big are post harvest losses in Ethiopia

Download or read book How big are post harvest losses in Ethiopia written by Minten, Bart and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2016-07-20 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a unique large-scale data set on teff production and marketing, Ethiopia’s most important cash crop, we study post-harvest losses in rural-urban value chains, specifically between producers and urban retailers in the capital, Addis Ababa. We analyze the structure of the value chain and rely on self-reported losses by different value chain agents (farmers, wholesale traders, and retailers). We estimate that post-harvest losses in the most prevalent pathway in the rural-urban value chain, amount to between 2.2 and 3.3 percent of total harvested quantities. The variation in this figure depends on the storage facilities used and on assumed losses during transport at the farm. These losses are significantly lower than is commonly assumed for staple foods, possibly because of the rather good storage characteristics of teff due to its low moisture content. These findings, nonetheless, point to the need to gather further solid evidence on post-harvest losses in staple foods in these settings to ensure appropriate policies and investments

Book Insect Pests of Stored Grain

Download or read book Insect Pests of Stored Grain written by Ranjeet Kumar and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stored products of agriculture and animal origin are attacked by more than 600 species of beetles, 70 species of moths, and about 355 species of mites, causing huge quantitative and qualitative losses and insect contamination in food commodities. This is an important quality control problem. This book, Insect Pests of Stored Grain: Biology, Behavior, and Management Strategies, provides comprehensive coverage of stored product entomology for the sustainable management of insects and other noninsect pests, such as mites, birds, rodents, and fungi, with the aim to mitigate and eliminate these losses of food from grains. The author, who has studied sustainable and herbal management of stored grain and seed insect pests in his research, considers sustainable management of stored grain insect pests and eco-friendly approaches along with the utilization of waste materials. Starting with a history of stored product entomology from the beginning to the modern era in detail along with an introduction of storage entomology, the book then goes on to cover a range of important issues, including Significant developments in the field of storage entomology Classification and identification of important stored grain insects Major stored product coleopteran and lepidopteran insects that infest stored commodities Estimation of losses caused by stored grain insect pests Factors responsible for infestation of stored grain insects Different storage structures Alternative methods for the management of stored grain insects by utilization of behavior modification techniques or utilization of secondary metabolites of plants Fumigation of stored grains for the protection of infestation Insect Pests of Stored Grain: Biology, Behavior, and Management Strategies covers a vast amount of valuable information on stored product entomology for the sustainable management of insects and other noninsect pests.
