It is from no lack of appreciation of their talents that the author has apparently neglected mention of the American artists resident in foreign capitals - like Bridgman, Duveneck, Wight, Neal, Bacon, Benson, Ernest Parton, Millet, Whistler, Dana, Blashfield, Miss Gardner, Miss Conant, and many others who have done credit to American aesthetic culture. But it was necessary to draw the line somewhere; and to discuss what our artists are painting abroad would have at once enlarged the scope of the work beyond the limits of the plan adopted. An exception has been made in the case of our sculptors, because they have so uniformly lived and wrought in Europe, and so large a proportion of them are still resi dent there, that, were we to confine this branch of the subject only to the sculptors now actually in America, there would be little left to say about their department of our arts. That period has practically closed in the sense that a newer generation with different aims and aspirations has come forward, and the men who broke ground years ago in the Society of American Artists have turned their furrow and had their day. Indeed, those I have chosen to write about herein, with the exception of Sargent, have passed on and passed out. Not only their period but their work has ended. We are now beginning to see them in something like historic perspective. Perhaps, then, the time is opportune for speaking of them as a group and of their in uence upon American art. Dozens of painters became identified with American art just after the Centennial, and many of those who came back from Munich and Paris in the late seventies and the early eighties are still living and producing. During that time he painted his picture of a cat with her kittens, the first work he had on the line in the exhibition of the National Academy. It is one of his best pictures. The old cat, which served as a model, was very restless, having no notion of sitting for her portrait, and Mrs. Beard had to hold her. While the artist sketched the outline or laid on the color. It was during his residence in Buffalo that Mr. Beard went to Italy, where he spent two years amid the inspiring influence of Italian art. Two years after his return Mr. Beard settled in New York, where he has remained ever since, paint ing many works of merit and celebrity, and becoming a member of the National Academy, which entitles him to add N. A. To his name. Some years ago he took a long tour in the South and West, spending several months among the savage Indians of Colo rado, Without losing his scalp.
