Book Defending and Defining the Faith

Download or read book Defending and Defining the Faith written by D.H. Williams and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-07 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Early Christian Apologetics, D.H. Williams offers a comprehensive presentation of Christian apologetic literature from the second to the fifth century, considering each writer within the intellectual context of the day. Williams argues that most apologies were not directed at a pagan readership. In most cases, he says, ancient apologetics had a double object: to instruct the Christian and to persuade weak Christians or non-Christians who were sympathetic to Christian claims. Traditionally, scholars of apologetics have focused on the context of persecution in the pre-Constantinian period. By following the links in the intellectual trajectory up though the early fifth century, Williams prompts deeper reflection on the process of Christian self-definition in late antiquity. Taken cumulatively, he finds, apologetic literature was in fact integral to the formation of the Christian identity in the Roman world.

Book A Critical History of Christian Literature and Doctrine from the Death of the Apostles to the Nicene Council Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Critical History of Christian Literature and Doctrine from the Death of the Apostles to the Nicene Council Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by James Donaldson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical History of Christian Literature and Doctrine From the Death of the Apostles to the Nicene Council, Vol. 2 The era embraced in our second division extends from the reign of Antoninus Pius to that of Commodus. One of the writers included in the previous group, Polycarp, lived far on into this period. But his style and mode of thought, as well as the most active part of his life, belong to the earlier period. The writer of the Pastor of Hermas may also have lived in the time of the Antonines, but here again in the lack of external evidence we are led by the character of his work to place him in the earliest group of Christian writers. On the other hand, some of the writers included in the second group flourished in the reign of Hadrian. The first Apologists presented their apologies to that emperor. But as their writings are lost, and consequently a thorough study of their mode of thought is impossible, we class them along with those who carried out the spe01al work which they had commenced. Book A History of Apologetics

Download or read book A History of Apologetics written by Avery Dulles and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2018-08-22 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making the case for the Christian faith—apologetics—has always been part of the Church's mission. Yet Christians sometimes have had different approaches to defending the faith, responding to the needs of their respective times and framing their arguments to address the particular issues of their day. Cardinal Avery Dulles's A History of Apologetics provides a masterful overview of Christian apologetics, from its beginning in the New Testament through the Middle Ages and on to the present resurgence of apologetics among Catholics and Protestants. Dulles shows how Christian apologists have at times both criticized and drawn from their intellectual surroundings to present the reasonableness of Christian belief. Written by one of Catholicism's leading American theologians, A History of Apologetics also examines apologetics in the 20th and early 21st centuries including its decline among Catholics following Vatican II and its recent revival, as well as the contributions of contemporary Evangelical Protestant apologists. Dulles also considers the growing Catholic-Protestant convergence in apologetics. No student of apologetics and contemporary theology should be without this superb and masterful work.
