Download or read book The Letter of Jude written by Guy Manuell and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This commentary on The Letter of Jude engages the Greek text and is designed for pastors, theological students, and lay readers. Jude, a brother of Jesus, warns members of the early Jesus movement against intruders in their midst and exhorts those believers not to deviate from the fundamental tenets of the faith in behavior and belief. It also provides a unique analysis that links Jude with 1 Corinthians in terms of their authors literary style, Jewish backgrounds, and closely correlated descriptions of the errorists described in both letters. The Letter of Jude is highly relevant to Christians in the twenty-first century. Even many of those now calling themselves evangelical have abandoned any pretence to adhering to biblical doctrines. This commentary seeks to emphasise Jude message: contend for biblical truth, and live so that the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ is alive, true, and liberating.

Excerpt: ...2 Tim. iv. 18; Heb. xiii. 21; 1 Pet. iv. 11, v. 11: 2 Pet. iii. 18; Jude 25; Apoc. i. 6, v. 13, vii. 12) see Westcott, Hebrews, p. 464; Bingham, xiv. 2. 1; Hooker, Ecd. Pol. v. 42. 7. Glory is given to God "through Christ " in three (Rom. xvi. 27; 1 Pet. iv. 11; Jude 25; so also in Clem. Rom. lviii.). In later times this became an Arian watchword; see Basil, de S. S. i. 3; Socrates, i. 21; Theodoret, ii. 23. otik 85 jo. The collocation of the words is rightly considered by Hofmann and von Soden to show that the doxology is addressed to Christ, as are those in 2 Tim. iv. 18; 2 Pet. iii. 18; Apoc. i. 6. It is hardly to be supposed that any serious writer would lay himself open to misunderstanding on so grave a point, when by merely throwing back the words Sia 'lyo-ov Xpia-rov he could have prevented all possibility of mistake. The same remark will apply to Heb. xiii. 20, 21. The Christian doxologies, except that in 2 Pet. iii. 18 (for the Jewish form see i. 3), end with Amen. Our Lord used this word, in a manner peculiar to Himself, to affirm His own utterances, not those of another person; and this usage was adopted by the Church. See Dal man, Worle Jesu, p. 185. Dr. Chase says that the addition of Amen marks the formula as liturgical, The Lord's Prayer in the Early Church, p. 170. 12. (IT) ei-i e(r8e... is i, lvoi ujue 7U(j.paicoTOS. "Be not amazed by the fiery trial in your midst, since it is sent to prove you, as though some amazing thing were happening to you." IIiyxDo-is is used Apoc. xviii. 9, 18, of the conflagration which devours Babylon. Here, however, the allusion is to the fire by which gold is tested, and the word is probably taken from Prov. xxvii. 21, Soki/xwv apyvptio Koa xpucrui 7n, 'puxns: cf....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a lack of serious historical investigation of the famous creedal statement 'Christ descended into hell' that was universally affirmed by the church for the first 1,500 years of Church history. This book is an in-depth investigation of the history of the doctrine of Christ's descent and how Revelation 1:18 alludes to Christ's descent. COMMENDATION "In The Battle for the Keys Justin Bass leads us through an exceptional exegetical, historical, and theological exploration of the question of both the whether and whither of the Christ's descensus ad infernos. Whatever doubters or believers choose to do with Dr Bass's competent and convincing evidence, arguments and conclusions, they cannot choose to ignore them." - Michael J. Svigel, Dallas Theological Seminary, USA

Book excerpt: Jude is a short letter making it easy to read entirely in one sitting. Yet the letter is rarely read, and it is not a popular text for teaching and preaching. Jude is a warning to an early Christian community about a group of itinerant teachers bearing a message that Jude considers incompatible with the apostolic gospel. The teaching and practice of these people puts them into a class of individuals who, according to Scripture, incur God’s wrath and judgment. Jude stresses that there is guaranteed judgment on those who live outside the normalized instruction and teach others to do the same. The importance of a lifestyle that adheres with biblical teaching is just as crucial today as it was in the early church. This commentary highlights the oral and performative nature of the first-century Mediterranean world. Jude was situated in this oral context, and it decisively shaped the form and delivery of the epistle while also enhancing its content. One cannot separate the content of a message from how a message comes to expression. This commentary aims to show the relationship between expression and content, demonstrating that there is not only value in what Jude says but in how he says it.
