The choice at any rate was deliberately made and has been persistently followed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Epistle of Paul to the Galatians The bible for home and school is intended to place the results of the best modern biblical scholarship at the disposal of the general reader. It does not seek to dupli cate other commentaries to which the student must turn. Its chief characteristics are (a) its rigid exclusion of all processes, both critical and exegetical, from its notes; (é) its presupposition and its use of the assured results of historical investigation and criticism wherever such results throw light on the biblical text; (5) its running analysis both in text and comment; (d) its brief explana tory notes adapted to the rapid reader; (e) its thorough but brief Introductions; (f) its use of the Revised Version of 1881, supplemented with all important renderings in other versions. Biblical science has progressed rapidly during the past few years, but the reader still lacks a brief, comprehensive commentary that shall extend to him in usable form mate rial now at the disposition of the student. It is hoped that in this series the needs of intelligent Sunday School teachers have been met, as well as those of clergymen and lay readers, and that in scope, purpose, and loyalty to the Scriptures as a foundation of Christian thought and life, its volumes will stimulate the intelligent use of the Bible in the home and the school. Excerpt: ... without observed parallel--is, on the whole, the most probable. Parallels would in the nature of the case be difficult to discover, since they could be recognised only by evidence not furnished in the context. It remains, however, that the significance of tb xpfrrepov depends on the question of fact whether Paul had actually preached twice in Galatia before writing this letter; zb xp6tpov itself does not prove him to have done so. See further in Introd. p. xlv. That xb xpfrrepov implies two visits to Galatia is the view of Alf. Ltft. Sief. (Zahn, two or more) Bous., and many other modem interpreters from Luther down. Sief. quotes Grot, and Keil for the second of the views stated above. Vernon Bartlet, in Expositor, Series V, vol. 10 (1899), p. 275, explains tb xpiwpov as meaning "at the beginning," in the earlier part of his evangelising visit, and as suggesting that it was only the initiation of his work that was occasioned by his illness, the continuance of it being for other reasons. He supports this view by the contention that s!tay(eklX, oiJxi refers to the presentation of the gospel to a people who have not received it, and, therefore, can not be used to cover two visits (a statement sufficiently refuted by Rom. i" 13")-No instances of tb xp6tepov in this sense are cited, nor does it seem to be justified by usage. The view of McGiffert, Apostolic Age, p. 228, that tb xpirtpov refers to the eastward journey from Antioch to Derbe, the later, implied, journey being the return westward, does less violence to the usage of tb xpixepov and eflorrfO.IX, oiai. But inasmuch as the letter is addressed to all the churches of the group, and the most eastern would on this theory have been visited but once, it is...

This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical and Grammatical Commentary on St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians: With a Revised Translation The following commentary is the first part of an attempt to elucidate St. Paul's Epistles, by systematically applying to the Sacred d104 the present principles of grammar and criticism. It is the result of several years' devotion to the study of biblical Greek, and owes its existence to the conviction that, in this country, the present very advanced state of philology has scarcely been applied with sufficient rigour to the interpretation of the New Testament. Our popular commentaries are too exclusively exegetical,1 and presuppose, in the ordinary student, a greater knowledge of the peculiarities of the language of the New Testament than it is at all probable he possesses. Even the more promising student is sure to meet with two stumbling-blocks in his path, when he first maturely enters upon the study of the Holy Scriptures. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical and Exegetical Commentary: On the Epistles to the Ephesians and to the Colossians The following Commentary is primarily philological. Its aim is to ascertain with as great precision as possible the actual meaning of the writer's language. The Commentaries which have been regularly consulted are those of Chrysostom and Theodore of Mopsuestia, amongst the ancients; and amongst the moderns, Alford, Barry, De Wette, Eadie, Ellicott, Meyer (W. Schmidt), Moule, von Soden, and the Speaker's; also for Ephesians, Harless, Stier, and Macpherson; and for Colossians, Lightfoot The Commentary of von Soden, though concise, is very acute and independent. Mr. Moule's also, although bearing a modest title, is of great value. Other writers have been occasionally consulted. Much use has been made of Fritzsche's occasional notes in his various commentaries, especially in connexion with the illustration of the language of the Epistles from classical and late Greek authors. Wetstein, of course, has not been overlooked. The text adopted is that of the Revisers, except where otherwise stated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical and Grammatical Commentary on St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians: With Revised Translation The Commentaries of Professor Ellicott, modest and unassuming as they are in tone, really mark an epoch in English sacred literature. They are as different from other English commentaries as De Wette's are from the Germans who preceded him; and what De Wette has been to German exegesis, Ellicott is and will be to the English. I speak of scholarship and mode of exhibition mainly; but the remark is also true in another respect, for, as De Wette was in his time the soundest and most favorable type of German rationalism as applied to the exposition of Scripture, Ellicott now most fitly represents the clear common sense and reverential piety so happily characteristic of the best biblical expositors in the English church. Protestant Germany only could have produced a De Wette, and Protestant England only, an Ellicott. It is the professed object of both these writers, by a severe and purely grammatical analysis of the language of the sacred penmen, to ascertain precisely the ideas which they meant to convey; and to express the results of this analysis in the simplest and briefest manner possible, without reference to theological systems, or ecclesiastical prepossessions, or practical inferences. This method must lie at the foundation of all true exegesis, and, to those who receive the Bible as the word of God, must form the basis of all Christian theology. Yet it is a method very seldom followed with any good degree of strictness, and it is not a method which is generally particularly interesting to theologians and preachers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul's letter to the churches of Galatia was for many years a document of special interestand study for renowned New Testament scholar F. F. Bruce. This excellent volume in theNew International Greek Testament Commentary series contains Bruce's mature work onthat important early epistle. Through phrase-by-phrase exegesis of the Greek text, consistent awareness of the historicaland geographical context, and balanced dialogue with scores of other scholars, Brucesuccessfully bridges the hermeneutical gap and makes the text of Galatians come alive forboth scholars and students. Based on careful historical-critical-linguistic exegesis yet primarilytheological in character, this commentary places special emphasis throughout onPaul's insistence on justification before God by faith apart from works of the law, and onPaul's presentation of the Spirit as the principle of the new life in Christ.
