Book A Critical Analysis of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Administered to Community College Students Enrolled in Vocational Technical Courses

Download or read book A Critical Analysis of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Administered to Community College Students Enrolled in Vocational Technical Courses written by James C. Walsh and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In order to provide aptitude information for vocational place-ment used in all military services and to be used in the Department of Defense High School Testing Program, the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) wlas developed. This instrument was designed specifically to be used in counseling high school students regarding military and civilian occupations and for aiding the military with selection, training, and assignment. This study involved an original sample of 157 volunteer students enrolled in one of four vocational programs at a community college. The groups were designated as: Heavy Equipment, Automotive, Electronics, and Industrial Electricity. Keith Kirkbride, Director of Vocational Programs for the Spokane Community Colleges, provided helpful assistance in obtaining useful student data for the study. The community college was interested in finding an assessment tool that would predict a student's success in a vocational program. The ASVAB was administered to each group and data were analyzed to determine the predictability of the ASVAB in this community college setting. Significant relationships were found between individual subtests of the ASVAB which identified three measurement areas: intelligence measures; achievement tests reflecting specific high school coursework, and vocational tests measuring first-hand experience in such areas as auto mechanics and electronics. The profiles constructed by regression equations to predict GPA were not significant within groups or for the ttotal sample. Also, these data were not effective in identifying students who withdrew from the programs. Several confounding variables were identified which suggest future research"--Document.

Book The Effects of Practice on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery

Download or read book The Effects of Practice on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) was administered five separate times to fifty-seven men and women of military service age. The objective was to determine to what extent means and cross-session correlations are stable over sessions. Ten individual subtests, the derived ASVAB area composites (N=10) and the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) were examined for stability. The means and dispersions of scores for this population were below the national average. Means increased over sessions .5 standard deviations or more on half the subtests and consequently on most of the composite scores. Correlations for the composites were largely stable over sessions. Correlations between composites were generally lower than within composites. The implications of practice effects for paper and pencil as well as automated selection tests are discussed.

Book Meta Analysis of Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery Subtest Validity Data

Download or read book Meta Analysis of Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery Subtest Validity Data written by Nicole S. Stermer and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was conducted to investigate the efficacy of selection procedures associated with the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). The main hypothesis tested was whether the Armed Forces Qualifying Test (AFQT), an ASVAB subtest composite, is a valid predictor of training success. Subhypotheses investigated whether the AFQT is a more valid predictor of training success than the individual career-specific selector composites. A final hypothesis dealt with the expectation that the AFQT would show a larger improvement in validities for women than for men. It was expected that the AFQT would demonstrate validities at least as high as the selector composites, due to the moderating effects of general cognitive ability. Book Estimating AFQT by Telephone Using a Computer Adaptive Test

Download or read book Estimating AFQT by Telephone Using a Computer Adaptive Test written by Peter J. Legree and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A computer adaptive test was administered over the telephone by reading items and response alternatives to 144 individuals who had recently enlisted in the U.S. Army and had completed the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). Subject responses were entered into a computer by the telephone interviewer thereby allowing the adaptive test program to estimate aptitude with approximately 10 verbal items. Analyses indicate that the Telephone Test is highly correlated with the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) in the sample we tested, r = .66; the bivariate correction for range restriction estimated this population correlation to be .81. A confirmatory factor analysis produced a four factor solution with the Telephone Test loading at a very high level (.91) on a Verbal factor, which had a substantial loading (.72) on a higher order factor. The magnitude of the factor loadings and the administration time (5 to 10 minutes) indicate that the procedure provides an excellent measure of crystallized Verbal aptitude that can be incorporated into brief telephone interviews and used to estimate AFQT and general aptitude."--DTIC.

Book Meta Analysis of Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery Composite Validity Data

Download or read book Meta Analysis of Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery Composite Validity Data written by Nicole S. Stermer and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the efficacy of selection procedures associated with the Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). The main hypothesis tested was whether the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT), an ASVAB composite, is a valid predictor of training success. Additional hypotheses investigated whether the AFQT is a more valid predictor of training success than the individual career-specific selector composites. A final hypothesis dealt with the expectation that the AFQT would show a larger improvement over selector composites in validities for females than for males. Results indicate the AFQT has high predictive validity for all military occupations included in the sample. Differential validity is observed to favor three of the four ASVAB composites (Mechanical, General, and Electronic). For the fourth composite, (Administrative), the AFQT has higher validity, and the increment does favor females. Two possible explanations for the findings are discussed. The need for continued research is indicated. Theses.

Book Validity of the ASVAB Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery for Predicting Performance in Marine Corps Training Courses Gender Differences

Download or read book Validity of the ASVAB Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery for Predicting Performance in Marine Corps Training Courses Gender Differences written by Milton H. Maier and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Females tend to have higher performance than males in clerical and food services training courses, when aptitude scores are held constant. To help account for the differences, educational level and interest in clerical-type activities are included in this analysis, along with aptitude composite scores. A recommendation is made about adjusting aptitude qualifying scores for females. Book Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery ASVAB Predicting Military Criteria from General and Specific Abilities

Download or read book Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery ASVAB Predicting Military Criteria from General and Specific Abilities written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the effectiveness of observed measures of general and specific for the prediction of training success. Scores on the Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) were used to estimate the general ad specific components of abilities for recruits in 125 military occupations across the four U.S. Armed Services. The results of this study replicated and extended the results of earlier investigations using Principal Components analysis of observed ASVAB scores. These studies indicated that psychometric general ability 'g' is usually the best predictor of training success as measured by final technical school grade and Skill Qualification Test scores for the sample of military occupations used in this study. However, measures for specific ability resulted in significant increments to validity for 118 of the 125 military occupations examined. For this sample of military jobs, some situational specificity was found; thus, continued use of measures of specific abilities appears warranted. Keywords: Intelligence tests, Prediction, Job training recruits, Mental ability, Aptitude tests, Personnel selection.

Book Comparison of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery to the General Aptitude Test Battery

Download or read book Comparison of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery to the General Aptitude Test Battery written by Pamla Palmer and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A statistical comparison of two test batteries, the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) and the General Aptitude Battery (GATB), is presented. The comparison is based on a sample that is predominantly male and white. Four different analyses were carried out and are reported here. The first analysis described the sample and its performance on the subtests and the composites of the GATB and the subtests and Department of Defense Student Testing Program composites of the ASVAB. The second analysis investigated the extent to which the ASVAB can predict GATB subtests and composites, and vice versa. The third analysis was a canonical correlation of the subtests of the two batteries. The fourth analysis consisted of principal components factor analyses of the two batteries, both separately and combined. Results showed that the batteries do not overlap enough to be considered equivalent or interchangeable, but that they do share a large amount of variance. Such shared variance is to be expected in batteries which have been developed for occupational selection or guidance for similar populations.
