Book excerpt: Religions flourish everywhere around the planet, shaping people's lives, providing meaning and spiritual guidance in a perplexing world, giving comfort in times of distress. Divided into 52 sections and grouped into four chapters Religion: A Crash Course takes a geographical approach. It covers the ancient religions that emanate from the Indian subcontinent, such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism through to the Abrahamic faiths of the Jews, Christians, and Muslims of Arabia and Europe. The third section looks at the way Indian religions found their way to China and Japan, mingling Taoism, Confucianism, and Shinto. Finally, the less well-documented tribal religions of Africa, Australasia, and the Americas are explored as well as recent phenomena in the New World: the Mormons, Rastafarians, and Pentecostalists.

Download or read book Crash Course in Mormonism written by Volker Heide and published by . This book was released on 2019-08-25 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to help you better understand the teachings of Mormonism. It called a "crash course" because it covers a lot of ground. While this overview is comprehensive, all the chapters flow together to give you a good insight into LDS teaching and practices. All of us have Mormon friends, coworkers or neighbors. How do we effectively share our faith with them? The first step is to try to understand their teaching and way of thinking. You need to try to understand their world and way of life. Then, after establishing a relationship of friendship and trust, and if the right opportunity arises, we can discuss what we believe about God, Jesus, and the Bible. This book also presents an overview of the basic teachings of the Bible, especially as it relates to specific doctrines of the LDS. If you want to share your faith, you must first be well grounded in the Christian faith. Numerous passages are given to show what the Scriptures teach about God, humanity, law, gospel, the Bible and Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Please note that these Bible verses are not given so that you might bash a Mormon over the head with them. The LDS are very offended by "Bible-bashing" (as they call it). This is when a Christian starts quoting Bible passages to prove that Mormon theology is all wrong. This never works well. A Mormon will take this as a personal attack on themselves and their church. Their defenses go up and they immediately shut down. They feel like we are using the Bible to bash their faith and integrity. Many well-meaning people use this confrontational approach of trying to argue doctrine with members of the LDS church (especially those missionaries that might visit your home). However, it rarely works. In fact, it does more harm than good. The discussions of the Bible verses in this book seek to deepen your understanding of the Christian faith. You need to fully understand and appreciate the good news of the gospel. You need to have a living and vibrant relationship with the Living God. Appreciate the incredible power of God's grace and the forgiveness of sins that comes through the cross and resurrection of our Lord. Realize that God the Father loves you unconditionally. Experience for yourself that "peace which passes all understanding." Then, you can be prepared to discuss and explain theological points in a loving and winsome manner, when that opportunity arises. This is the best way to talk about God with your LDS friends. As Peter tells us, "But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope you have. But do this with gentleness and respect."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The famous French sociologist Emile Durkheim is universally recognised as one of the founding fathers of sociology as an academic discipline. Although his influence continued long after his death in 1917, this is the first book to provide a detailed look at the whole of his work in the field of religion. Durkheim on Religion is a selection of readings from Durkheim's writings on religion, presented in order of original publication, ranging from early reviews to articles and extracts from his books. Also included are detailed bibliographies and abstracts together with contributions by such writers as Van Gennep, Goldenweiser and Stanner. This book will be invaluable to those studying sociology and anthropology, but will also be of interest to those studying the history or philosophy of religion, as well as to anyone with an interest in Durkheim.

Book Church State and Democracy in Expanding Europe

Download or read book Church State and Democracy in Expanding Europe written by Lavinia Stan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-08-29 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lavinia Stan and Lucian Turcescu examine the relationship between religion and politics in ten former communist Eastern European countries. Contrary to widespread theories of increasing secularization, Stan and Turcescu argue that in most of these countries, the populations have shown themselves to remain religious even as they embrace modernization and democratization. Church-state relations in the new EU member states can be seen in political representation for church leaders, governmental subsidies, registration of religions by the state, and religious instruction in public schools. Stan and Turcescu outline three major models: the Czech church-state separation model, in which religion is private and the government secular; the pluralist model of Hungary, Bulgaria and Latvia, which views society as a group of complementary but autonomous spheres - for example, education, the family, and religion - each of which is worthy of recognition and support from the state; and the dominant religion model that exists in Poland, Romania, Estonia, and Lithuania, in which the government maintains informal ties to the religious majority. Church, State, and Democracy in Expanding Europe offers critical tools for understanding church-state relations in an increasingly modern and democratic Eastern Europe.

Book Conceptualising Religion and Worldviews for the School

Download or read book Conceptualising Religion and Worldviews for the School written by Kevin O'Grady and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-14 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely volume addresses current debates surrounding the transition from the teaching of religious education (RE) to the more holistic subject of Religion and Worldviews (R&W) in England, and posits criteria for best practice among educators in varied settings and in a broader international context. By examining empirical sources, governmental reports, and in particular the 2018 final report from the Commission on Religious Education (CORE), the volume suggests key principles needed to guide the transition and ensure that R&W is effectively integrated into curricula, pedagogy, and teaching resources to meet the needs of all student groups. By effectively conceptualising R&W, the volume gives particular attention to the intersections of the subject with democratic citizenship education, intercultural competence, and religious literacy. This text will benefit researchers, academics, and educators with an interest in religious education and teacher education as well as the philosophy and sociology of education more broadly. Those interested in education policy and politics, as well as citizenship and schooling in the UK, will also benefit from this volume.
