Book A CP Violation and Rare Kaon Decay Experiment at Fermilab

Download or read book A CP Violation and Rare Kaon Decay Experiment at Fermilab written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The E731 collaboration at Fermilab has collected enough K .-->. 2.pi. events to give a statistical error of approx.0.5 x 10/sup -3/ on the CP violation parameter epsilon'/epsilon. Improvements have been made to reduce the systematic error. The experiment is also sensitive to many rare decays, and it set a new limit on the branching ratio of K/sub L/ .-->. .pi.°e/sup +/e/sup -/,

Book CP Violation in B s 0 J psi phi Decays

Download or read book CP Violation in B s 0 J psi phi Decays written by Sabato Leo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis reports on the final measurement of the flavor-mixing phase in decays of strange-bottom mesons (B_s) into J/psi and phi mesons performed in high-energy proton-antiproton collisions recorded by the Collider Experiment at Fermilab. Interference occurs between direct decays and decays following virtual particle-antiparticle transitions (B_s-antiB_s). The phase difference between transition amplitudes (“mixing phase”) is observable and extremely sensitive to contributions from non-standard-model particles or interactions that may be very hard to detect otherwise – a fact that makes the precise measurement of the B_s mixing phase one of the most important goals of particle physics. The results presented include a precise determination of the mixing phase and a suite of other important supplementary results. All measurements are among the most precise available from a single experiment and provide significantly improved constraints on the phenomenology of new particles and interactions.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fermilab experiments E731, E773, E799, and E832 are a series of experiments to investigate the physics of CP violation, CPT violation, and rare decays of the neutral kaon system. E731 finished data taking in 1988, during past year the full data set analysis was completed and yielded ([var epsilon][prime]/[var epsilon])[sub 2[pi]]=(7.4 [plus minus] 5.2 [stat] [plus minus] 2.9 [syst]) [times] 10[sup [minus]4] . The value favors a high top ark mass value within the Standard Model. E773 tests CPT violation by determining ([Delta][phi])[sub 2[pi]] with an accuracy of about 0.5[sup 0]. Data were taken during the last Fermilab Fixed Target run period between September and November 1991. It is anticipated the data analysis will be finished within a year. E799, with the primary goal of observing direct Cp Violation via searching for the rare decay K[sub L][yields] [pi][sup 0] l [sup +]l[sup [minus]] (where l = e, [mu] [nu]) took test data between November 1991 and January 1992 (Phase 1). Some preliminary results are shown here. E799 (Phase II) and E832 (a follow up experiment of E731) are scheduled to take data after the current Fermilab collider run with a new facility and detector.

Download or read book Kaon Physics written by Jonathan L. Rosner and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2001-01-15 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1947, the first of what have come to be known as "strange particles" were detected. As the number and variety of these particles proliferated, physicists began to try to make sense of them. Some seemed to have masses about 900 times that of the electron, and existed in both charged and neutral varieties. These particles are now called kaons (or K mesons), and they have become the subject of some of the most exciting research in particle physics. Kaon Physics at the Turn of the Millennium presents cutting-edge papers by leading theorists and experimentalists that synthesize the current state of the field and suggest promising new directions for the future study of kaons. Topics covered include the history of kaon physics, direct CP violation in kaon decays, time reversal violation, CPT studies, theoretical aspects of kaon physics, rare kaon decays, hyperon physics, charm: CP violation and mixing, the physics of B mesons, and future opportunities for kaon physics in the twenty-first century.

Book Measurements of CP Violation and Neutral Kaon Charge Radius Using K L Pi pi e e Decays

Download or read book Measurements of CP Violation and Neutral Kaon Charge Radius Using K L Pi pi e e Decays written by Alexander Golossanov and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CP violation and K{sup 0} charge radius were measured using K{sub L} {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}e{sup +}e{sup -} decays. Specifically, a unique CP-violating decay-plane asymmetry was measured along with the parameters of individual contributions to the decay invariant amplitude: (1) CP-conserving magnetic dipole direct emission form factor, (2) CP-conserving K{sup 0} charge radius transition amplitude and (3) an upper limit for the CP-violating electric dipole direct emission amplitude. The measurements were obtained from the data sample accumulated by KTeV experiment at Fermilab. KTeV had two major goals: the measurement of direct CP violation parameter Re({var_epsilon}{prime}/{var_epsilon}) and the study of rare kaon decays. The state of the art detector was constructed, commissioned, operated and maintained by an international collaboration of scientists from fourteen institutions. The K{sub L} {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} e{sup +}e{sup -} data was accumulated over the 1997 and 1999 running periods. During that time hundreds of billions K{sub L} decays took place in the KTeV fiducial decay region.

Book Observation of Direct CP Violation

Download or read book Observation of Direct CP Violation written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a subset of data collected in the 1996-97 fixed target run at Fermilab, the authors report the first preliminary measurement on the direct-CP violation from the KTeV experiment. The result is, e(prime)/e = (28.0-4.1) x 10−4, nearly 7 standard deviations above zero obtained by a blind analysis. This establishes the long-sought direct-CP violation effect in the two-pion system of neutral kaon decays. The experimental technique, data analysis and systematic checks for this measurement are discussed and the comparison with other measurements is also presented.

Book Latest Experimental Information On

Download or read book Latest Experimental Information On written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors review the latest experimental results in search for direct CP-violation by measuring the CP-violating parameters Re(????????/?) in neutral kaon decays. The recent result from Fermilab-KTeV Re(????????/?) = (28.0 ± 4.1) x 10−4, and the new preliminary result from CERN-NA48 Re(????????/?) = (14.0 ± 4.3) x 10−4, are presented. Both experiments, though using very different techniques, have now performed very well by collecting millions of events for all four relevant decay modes of K{sub L, S} to??− and?°?° simultaneously. The current world average on this important measurement is Re(????????/?) = 19.3 ± 10−4 with a?2/ndf = 11.1/5, establishing the existence of direct CP-violation. The experimental status of such crucial measurements and the future prospects are also discussed here.

Download or read book CP Violation written by I. I. Bigi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-01-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did the matter in our Universe not annihilate itself with antimatter immediately after its creation? The discovery of CP violation may answer this fundamental question. From the basics to the front line of research, this timely account presents background information and theoretical tools necessary for understanding this phenomenon. Early chapters explore charge conjugation, parity, and time reversal symmetries before introducing the Kobayashi-Maskawa ansatz for CP violation and examining the theoretical understanding of CP violating K meson decays. Following chapters reveal how the discovery of B mesons provides a new laboratory in which to study CP violation and predict CP violation in B meson decays and rare K meson decays. Later chapters continue the search for a new fundamental theory and address the problem of baryogenesis in the big bang universe. The importance of close links with experiment is stressed throughout. Each chapter concludes with problems. Detailed references are included. This book is suitable for graduate students and researchers in particle physics, atomic and nuclear physics and the history and philosophy of science.

Book Symmetry Violations and Rare Decays

Download or read book Symmetry Violations and Rare Decays written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This constitutes the report of the working group on symmetry violations and rare decays. The next generation of CP violating kaon decay experiments (the 2[pi] and [pi]°ee− modes) were considered at the Tevatron and at the proposed Main Injector, effectively building upon the work of the earlier Fermilab Workshop on Physics at the Main Injector. The optimizations for the electromagnetic calorimeter and for background rejection are treated in some detail. Very precise CPT tests in the 2[pi] decay modes are also treated. A sensitive experiment looking for flavor violation at the Main Injector (K{sub L} 2![mu]e) is discussed. The significant advantages of possible stretcher and prebooster rings are mentioned. 27 refs., 5 figs., 3 tabs.

Book B Physics Cp Violation 99 3rd Intl Conf

Download or read book B Physics Cp Violation 99 3rd Intl Conf written by Wei Shu Hou and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000-12-29 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CP violation was first observed in 1964, but only in 1999 did we gain much greater experimental insight. Direct CP violation finally appeared in the form of ε′/ε in the K system. Indirect CP violation in B → J/Ψ Ks decay, the raison d'être for construction of e+e- B factories, was first sniffed out at the proton-antiproton collider. The asymmetric B factories — BABAR at SLAC and BELLE at KEK — were completed, while the symmetric B factory at Cornell was upgraded to CLEO-III. It seems that everyone is positioning himself for the great competition on “B Physics and CP Violation”, racing to unravel the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, especially the size and origin of CP phases. The change of millennium provides a dramatic backdrop. To have intensive discussions at the technical level, to create broader interest in the subject, and to maximize interaction between experimenters and theorists, this book starts with the status of B factories: accelerator, detector and physics analysis. Following an overview of B physics and the CKM matrix, it delves into the details of lifetime, spectroscopy and decays, with even more specialized discussions on rare decays, direct and indirect CP violation, factorization and final state interactions, determination of unitarity phases, etc. Topics on ε′/ε, rare K decay, charm and hyperon systems, and various T, CP and CPT tests are also discussed at length. The book closes with the outlook for hadron machines and the prospects for new physics. A special feature is that there are two summary talks, one on experiment and the other on theory. The book is further augmented by two dozen excellent contributed talks.

Book Rare B Decays Mixing and Cp Violation at the Fermilab Tevatron

Download or read book Rare B Decays Mixing and Cp Violation at the Fermilab Tevatron written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over two decades since its discovery at Fermilab in 1977, the b quark has become an important laboratory for the exploration of the Standard Model as well as a potential window beyond it. Its kinematic properties, its large mass and long lifetime, and its large production cross section in hadron collisions, make it an excellent subject of study at the Tevatron {bar p}p collider. In this article, we will review recent results from CDF and D0 in two categories of tests of the Standard Model: the search for rare b decays, and the measurement of asymmetry parameters related to B° meson mixing and CP violation. The detectors have been described elsewhere. The data for the results presented here are from the 1992-96 collider run, representing at each experiment, approximately 100 pb−1 of integrated luminosity at (square root)s = 1.8 TeV.

Book The Physics of Kaon Decays

Download or read book The Physics of Kaon Decays written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OAK B188 The physics of kaon decays: CP violation and lepton flavor nonconservation. We discuss here the research that is likely to be done in the 1990's in the study of kaon decays. We concentrate on searches for direct CP violation and for the violation of electron- and muon-number, including approved and proposed experiments at existing facilities, and those which could be done at a facility using the proposed Fermilab Main Injector.
