Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Musicals, it is often said, burst into song and dance when mere words can no longer convey the emotion. This book argues that musicals burst into song and dance when one body can no longer convey the emotion. Rogers shows how the musical’s episodes of burlesque and minstrelsy model the kinds of radical relationships that the genre works to create across the different bodies of its performers, spectators, and creators every time the musical bursts into song. These radical relationships—borne of the musical’s obsessions with “bad” performances of gender and race—are the root of the genre’s progressive play with identity, and thus the source of its subcultural power. However, this leads to an ethical dilemma: Are the musical’s progressive politics thus rooted in its embrace of regressive entertainments like burlesque and minstrelsy? The Song Is You shows how musicals return again and again to this question, and grapple with a guilt that its joyous pleasures are based on exploiting the laboring bodies of its performers. Rogers argues that the discourse of “integration”—which claims that songs should advance the plot—has functioned to deny the radical work that the musical undertakes every time it transitions into song and dance. Looking at musicals from The Black Crook to Hamilton, Rogers confronts the gendered and racial dynamics that have always under-girded the genre, and asks how we move forward.

Book Cowgirl Is a State of Mind

Download or read book Cowgirl Is a State of Mind written by Laurie Hartman and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-09-04 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many things look easier than they really are. Barrel racing, ramshackle farm restoration and relationships are no exceptions, and all three are intertwined in this heartwarming novel. Split between the security of her job in a big city and longing for country simplicity, it takes a detour during a string of weekend rodeos to set in motion changes for Riley Montgomery. Riley follows her heart and buys a run-down farm, only to find that living in the country isnt what she expected. Her rookie mishaps embarrass her and amuses the locals, and further complicating things is the strained relationship that develops with the towns respected jack-of-alltrades, Jay Tapperd. Riley and Jay form the kind of bond where one would do anything for the other, but Jay doggedly stays out of reach emotionally. And although Jay helps her through a major setback, in the end its Rileys cowgirl spirit that drives her to roll up her sleeves and take charge of her life once again. Not only do you feel the excitement and disappointments that Riley experiences but you feel her sheer determination as well. A must read for every horse enthusiast! says Shelley Schaefer, producer of Maverick Rodeos and Turn N Burn Barrel Races.

Book Want Me

Download or read book Want Me written by Tracy Clark-Flory and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES "NEW & NOTEWORTHY" BOOK | A BUSTLE "MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK OF 2021" | ONE OF PUREWOW’S “BOOKS WE CAN’T WAIT TO READ IN FEBRUARY” | VANITY FAIR’S “THE BEST BOOKS TO BUY THIS VALENTINE’S DAY” "Want Me is complicated, fun, shocking, and heart-warming all at once." —Jessica Valenti, New York Times bestselling author of Sex Object "Intimate, challenging, and so very smart. Want Me is a gift." —Rebecca Traister, New York Times bestselling author of Good and Mad Tracy Clark-Flory grew up wedged between fizzy declarations of "girl power" and the sexualized mandates of pop culture. It was "broken glass ceilings" and Girls Gone Wild infomercials. With a vague aim toward sexual empowerment, she set out to become what men wanted--or, at least, understand it. In her moving, fresh, and darkly humorous memoir, she shares the thrilling and heartbreaking events that led to discovering conflicting truths about her own desire, first as a woman coming of age and then as a veteran journalist covering the sex beat. Tracing her experiences on adult film sets, at fetish conventions, and during an orgasmic meditation retreat (to name just a few), Clark-Flory weaves in statistics and expert voices to reckon with our views on sexual freedom. Want Me is about looking for love, sex, and power as a woman in a culture that is "freer" than ever, yet defined by unprecedented pressures and enduring constraints. This is a first-hand example of one woman who navigated the mixed messages of sexual expectation, only to discover the complexity of her own wants and our collective need to change the limitations of that journey.
