Book excerpt: This monograph is a study of the perceptions reflected in the Book of Haggai regarding the primary social, political and religious institutions in early Persian Yehud. Special attention is given to the form and function of prophecy, and to the role of the prophet in society. The study includes a history of the criticism of Haggai, a study of the book’s redactional history and socio-political context, and an exegesis and literary analysis of the text. It concludes with an examination of the distinctive perspectives found in the book and the sociological and religious milieu that produced them. The work is particularly useful for its detailed analysis of the biblical text, its attention to recent literature on the early Persian period, and its multidisciplinary and integrative approach.

Book excerpt: The collected proclamations ascribed to two little-known post-exilic prophets, Haggai and Zechariah, represent a bridge between the traditions of classical Israelite religion and the dramatic changes essential to the preservation of the fragile Restoration community. Carroll Stuhlmueller's section-by-section, verse-by-verse analysis and exposition focus on the prophetic word as addressed not only to Israel in this "time of small beginnings" but also to the Church today. His primary concern is the theological message of the prophets, yet ever with an eye toward their historical context, literary form, and cultural setting.

Book Haggai

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Haggai written by Tim Meadowcroft and published by Sheffield Phoenix Press Limited. This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new commentary is organized around a distinctive discourse analysis of the small prophetic book of Haggai, and an appreciation of its tightly crafted narrative. Identifying six discrete oracles from the prophet Haggai, Meadowcroft structures his analysis of the narrative around those six oracles. Thematically, the centre of Haggai's prophecy is the role of the temple within the life of the people of God. The desolation of the temple is bound up with the desolation of the land and the desolation of the people on the land. Rebuilding the temple will be the means to break the cycle of desolation. But things are more complex than that. Rebuilding the temple must happen within the fraught imperial context; and rebuilding the temple will foreground a tension between institutional life and the life of the Spirit. Contextualizing Haggai in today's world, Meadowcroft offers an extensive prolegomenon on reading Haggai as scripture. In it he hears a challenge to the Church in the West and a call to rediscover humanity's priestly role in the temple of an environment under threat of desolation.

Book Haggai Zechariah and Malachi

Download or read book Haggai Zechariah and Malachi written by Paul L. Redditt and published by William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company. This book was released on 1995 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Passionate and powerful in their own right, the prophecies of Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi together enrich the Old Testament in general and the prophetic corpus in particular by their perspectives. In this important new commentary, Paul L. Redditt explores the origins of each text and, by careful reconstruction of the social setting of each text, demonstrates how various editors reshaped the original messages of these Minor Prophets in light of prevailing social, political, and religious conditions. In respect of Zechariah and Malachi, significant new conclusions are argued. This volume will benefit scholars, teachers, students, and preachers alike in their understanding and application of the biblical text. - Back cover.

Book From Ruin to Restoration

Download or read book From Ruin to Restoration written by Dr. Geoffrey V. Guns and published by Sunday School Publishing Board. This book was released on 2018-11-12 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Haggai remains one of the most important books of the Old Testament Intertestamental Period. Why? Because it describes the challenges and struggles that occurred during the rebuilding of the first Temple that was built by King Solomon and later destroyed by the Babylonians in 587 BCE (see 1 Kings 7:1, 38; 2 Kings 25:8-9). It was during the Intertestamental Period that the cultural and religious foundations were laid that would evolve into the Judaism that we see in the New Testament. Throughout the study of the history, geography, and politics of this era, you will learn a lot about an important era of biblical history. This short Bible study guide will inform, enlighten, and inspire you to learn and study more whether you study alone or in a small group, a church-wide Bible study fellowship, or Sunday school class. Excerpt from the Book The New Testament Era begins in many respects with the close of the Old Testament Era. There is a commonly held belief that the time between the Old and New Testaments is the period of prophetic silence in Israel. One of the major difficulties that Bible teachers face when teaching about this era in Jewish history is the lack of enthusiasm on the part of many believers to want to study the Intertestamental Period. In all too many instances the cry is "give me Jesus and that's enough." Unfortunately, one cannot begin to comprehend the full impact of the ministry of Jesus without some knowledge of the cultural, historical, geographical, religious, and social backgrounds out of which His ministry took place.
