Excerpt: ...system, consist in the simplicity of his practice and the safe and certain operation of his remedy. And, although THoMson seems to have been utterly unconscious of the hazar-is' and difliculties of the established practice--yet, when these were brought to light, they served to_confirm him in the value" and universality of his discoveries; because, if all the wisdom of the schools, and genius, and ingenuity, of practitioners, had been bathed and confounded, through the lapse of four thousand years, it was evident that the discovery of a universal remedy for fever, must be found in another department than that of the established science! And in that department THomsoN rose to eminence, and received "his degree fiam the hand of nature." In that great labaratory of medical science, where nature makes our foodand fashions our medicines, THOMsoN spent thirty years of his life. A quack is one, who, in unblushing ignorance, palms his detestable and deadly nostrums upon the public, of which he knows nothing!.THomsoN laid before the public, without a shadow of concealment, remedies, the healing virtue of which he had tested by a practice of thirty years; and with invariable and indisputable success; a success, which, had I not seen, Y should have deemed impossible. i But some of the most learned of the faculty, who have attended to the effects of this new practice, have given their decided testimony to its power and its eflicacy, Prejudices rank and strong, as might have been expected, have prevented the popularity of a "safi: and simple mvlirod of cure," which bids fair, were it universally introduced, to banish diseases and untimely death from the nations of the world; to jntroduce the dawn of that redeeming...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of slightly eclectic medical lore dating to a very interesting period in which early scientific thought on experimental rigor and harm reduction was applied to a medical system riddled with leechcraft, mercury, and wanton surgical procedures. The suggestions promoted in this work largely deal with the Thomsonian botanical method involving certain herbal remedies but especially lobelia and capsicum (derived from hot peppers) which remain in vogue in homeopathic practice today. The extreme religious deference here given sets it aside from slightly later works which tended towards the purportedly atheistic. It is an occult work insofar as the attempt to replicate universal medicine is also concerned.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Botany: A Course of Lectures Delivered at Sussex Hall, During 1850 To this country a stranger, alike unknowing and unknown. Having in early life been educated in that same profession, and in our own case seen all their skill and knowledge applied in vain, at the same time also seen and felt the benefits of the skill and knowledge of a child of nature, we came prepared not only to expose the fallacies of the faculty on the one side, but to establish for the benefit of the country, the eternal truths of Me dical Botany on the other. We met as was natural, even in this country, in the first part of our career, many obstacles, which of course retarded our pro gress, but by a steady perseverance have at last overcome them all, and at this moment stand on an eminence that we scarcely dared to have anticipated at the commencement of our labours in this quarter of the globe. During the space of six years we have had the gratification of seeing passed through the press twenty editions of our Guide to Health.
