Phenomenon, and that this Action of Bodies upon one another, by means Lect. V. of Instruments, must be call'd Pressure, distinguishing between Force and v----v----' Prejfure, allowing Pressures of Powers to be to one another reciprocally as the Mafles multiplied into the Velocities v but denying that Forces are: in that Ratio. Now to shew that Forces, which we also call the Momenta of Bodies, are in the Ratio above-mentioned, let us impartially consider the following Experiment communicated first to me by Mr. George Graham. The Machine represented by the Figure has been already describ'd' {Edge 300, ) only we must suppose the Arc FE to be divided into 24 Degrees on each Side, counting from the Edges A D and C B of the flat square Pendulum, instead of 18 mark'd in the Figure j and that the Pendulum weighs 2 Pounds, and the Weight "W also two Pounds.. Now, if the Pendukim without the Weight W, be drawn up to the 24th Degree on the Side of E, when you let it go, it will rife to 24 on the* other Side; but if a Person, who holds the String L in his Hand (whilst the Weight W hangs half an Inch above A B C D, when at the lowestPlace) lets go the String just at the moment that the flat Pendulum comes to the lowest Place, the Pendulum receiving thereby an Addition of Matterequal to its own, goes only to 12 on the Side of F. If we let the Pendulum fall from 20 Degrees, and W be let down upon it at the lowestPart of the Vibration, then it will (thus loaded) go but to 10 Degrees i, and when you let it go from 12, if it receives the Weight W at bottom, it will go but to 6. Now to compare together the two Opinions, we must examine, which of.' them gives the Momentum the fame before and after the Reception of W. Ol D O P I N I O Ni New Opinion....

Book excerpt: The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. Medical theory and practice of the 1700s developed rapidly, as is evidenced by the extensive collection, which includes descriptions of diseases, their conditions, and treatments. Explosion, whether greater or less, A is always shot towards O twice as far as Annotat. B (when L M N L is added to it) is shot towards P. Lect. VI. There is no calling in question, that the Pressure made by the Gunpowder, sives equal Momenta to unequal Quantities of Matter, by giving them Velocities reciprocally proportionable to those Quantities of Matter: neither is there any doubt (in favour of the new Opinion) that Pits made in Clay by the Bodies driven by the Gunpowder (supposing the Clay fix'd at A and B, Fig. I.) will be to one another as i to 2, when the Bodies are as 2 to 1; 2 with half the Velocity making only a Pit as 1, when 1 with the double Velocity will make a Pit, as 2. This shews, that the Force may be double or half, when produc'd by a Body with the fame Momentum, when the Velocity differs. As lam now convinc'd that all the Phaenomenaof the Congress of Bodies may be equally folv'd according to the Principles of the Defenders of the new, as well as those of the old Opinion, I shall here give an Example of four Experiments, where all their Phaenomena will be folv'd both ways. Experiment III. Plaley. Fig. 5. Suspend two equal Clay Balls (for example, weighing two Ounces each) by Strings from the fame Height on the Machine for trying the Congress of Bodies. Then let the Body A be r*is'd up from the lowest Point, so as to let it fall towards C with fix Degrees of Velocity, to overtake the Body B falling the fame way with two Degrees of Velocity; and the Stroke being made at the Bottom, they will both go on together with four Degrees of Velocity, as may be observ'd by their going up to Number 4. Now here before the Stroke, the Momentum of A being 12, and the Momentum of B being four, the >um of the Momenta towards.

Book Oxford Studies in Experimental Philosophy Volume 1

Download or read book Oxford Studies in Experimental Philosophy Volume 1 written by Tania Lombrozo and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new field of experimental philosophy has emerged as the methods of psychological science have been brought to bear on traditional philosophical issues. Oxford Studies in Experimental Philosophy will be the place to go to see outstanding new work in the field. It will feature papers by philosophers, papers by psychologists, and papers co-authored by people in both disciplines. The series heralds the emergence of a truly interdisciplinary field in which people from different disciplines are working together to address a shared set of questions. The inaugural volume is roughly structured into four sections. The first three papers focus on recent developments in moral psychology, a topic that has seen lively debate and a great deal of progress over the last decade. The second section highlights three contributions that bring new methods to moral psychology: formal modeling and special populations. The third section brings together four papers that adopt an experimental philosophy approach to novel topics, including intuitive dualism, generics, joint action, and happiness. And the last two papers provide critical and historical context to the development of experimental philosophy.
