Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course in German Composition, Conversation and Grammar Review: For Use in Schools and Colleges Of the reading matter at the disposal of the author, thirty-two pieces have been selected for this volume as the groundwork for just as many lessons, which the author thinks 'ean be thoroughly studied in one school year of thirty-six weeks, allowing one recitation at the end of each quarter for reviewing, Sight reading, or extempore writing. The German selections include narrative, epistolary, descriptive, and easy essay styles, and, being carefully graded, they rise from the light and pleasing mystery of the nursery tale to the sober disquisition of the scientific theorem. For this reason, and since no two of these selec tions have come from the pen of the same writer, they naturally differ greatly in regard to diction and phrase ology, a feature not to be underrated in a book purporting to serve as an introduction to composition work. Book A New Elementary Course in the German Language

Download or read book A New Elementary Course in the German Language written by Gabriel Campbell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Elementary Course in the German Language: For the Use of Schools One language contains all the general principles of every other. Comparative philology - a new science - is entirely changing the mode of teaching languages. It shows that the true method of acquiring a foreign tongue is by compar ing it with the one already known. The aim of this work is to make a practical application of the recent improvements in this direction. The pupil is supposed to be familiar with the English language. Its grammar being Teutonic or German, no at tempt is made to teach what should properly be studied in the native tongue. The German and English are brought side by side, their differences and affinities compared, and that point taught first which will open to the learner the broadest field. A large majority of the German words may be formed from the English by a regular system of consonant changes. For this reason, the chief study will be the forms of words. The same principle is followed in developing the endings which characterize these words in their relations to each other. The pupil is encumbered as little as possible with minor details and exceptional cases. The illustrations though drawn from the language of real life, are free from colloquial, proverbial or poetical idioms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Universities: A Review of Prof. Paulsen's Work on the German University System Of course the teacher cannot always replace the book. There is a whole outside world of plain people whose interest in science has nothing to do with schools or controversy or personalities. As things are, school and sect tendencies are very apt to make them selves felt Ih scientific life in Germany, and it is hard (harder than in France or England) for a scientific man to make his way outside University circles. The faithful critic of Die Deutschen Universitaten takes these things into account. But he turns gladly to the bright side. The great reputation of the German Universities was won by services to science only possible to silent delight in the matter itself, loyalty in work and love of truth, and this high and disinterested spirit is the heritage of the German Universities of to - day.
