Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is divided into two parts. The first one is purely algebraic. Its objective is the classification of quadratic forms over the field of rational numbers (Hasse-Minkowski theorem). It is achieved in Chapter IV. The first three chapters contain some preliminaries: quadratic reciprocity law, p-adic fields, Hilbert symbols. Chapter V applies the preceding results to integral quadratic forms of discriminant ± I. These forms occur in various questions: modular functions, differential topology, finite groups. The second part (Chapters VI and VII) uses "analytic" methods (holomor phic functions). Chapter VI gives the proof of the "theorem on arithmetic progressions" due to Dirichlet; this theorem is used at a critical point in the first part (Chapter Ill, no. 2.2). Chapter VII deals with modular forms, and in particular, with theta functions. Some of the quadratic forms of Chapter V reappear here. The two parts correspond to lectures given in 1962 and 1964 to second year students at the Ecole Normale Superieure. A redaction of these lectures in the form of duplicated notes, was made by J.-J. Sansuc (Chapters I-IV) and J.-P. Ramis and G. Ruget (Chapters VI-VII). They were very useful to me; I extend here my gratitude to their authors.

Book A Course in Mathematics for Students of Physics Volume 2

Download or read book A Course in Mathematics for Students of Physics Volume 2 written by Paul Bamberg and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook, available in two volumes, has been developed from a course taught at Harvard over the last decade. The course covers principally the theory and physical applications of linear algebra and of the calculus of several variables, particularly the exterior calculus. The authors adopt the 'spiral method' of teaching, covering the same topic several times at increasing levels of sophistication and range of application. Thus the reader develops a deep, intuitive understanding of the subject as a whole, and an appreciation of the natural progression of ideas. Topics covered include many items previously dealt with at a much more advanced level, such as algebraic topology (introduced via the analysis of electrical networks), exterior calculus, Lie derivatives, and star operators (which are applied to Maxwell's equations and optics). This then is a text which breaks new ground in presenting and applying sophisticated mathematics in an elementary setting. Any student, interpreted in the widest sense, with an interest in physics and mathematics, will gain from its study.

Book A Course of Higher Mathematics

Download or read book A Course of Higher Mathematics written by V. I. Smirnov and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 645 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Course of Higher Mathematics, Volume II: Advanced Calculus covers the theory of functions of real variable in advanced calculus. This volume is divided into seven chapters and begins with a full discussion of the solution of ordinary differential equations with many applications to the treatment of physical problems. This topic is followed by an account of the properties of multiple integrals and of line integrals, with a valuable section on the theory of measurable sets and of multiple integrals. The subsequent chapters deal with the mathematics necessary to the examination of problems in classical field theories in vector algebra and vector analysis and the elements of differential geometry in three-dimensional space. The final chapters explore the Fourier series and the solution of the partial differential equations of classical mathematical physics. This book will prove useful to advanced mathematics students, engineers, and physicists.

Book A Course in the Theory of Groups

Download or read book A Course in the Theory of Groups written by Derek J.S. Robinson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " A group is defined by means of the laws of combinations of its symbols," according to a celebrated dictum of Cayley. And this is probably still as good a one-line explanation as any. The concept of a group is surely one of the central ideas of mathematics. Certainly there are a few branches of that science in which groups are not employed implicitly or explicitly. Nor is the use of groups confined to pure mathematics. Quantum theory, molecular and atomic structure, and crystallography are just a few of the areas of science in which the idea of a group as a measure of symmetry has played an important part. The theory of groups is the oldest branch of modern algebra. Its origins are to be found in the work of Joseph Louis Lagrange (1736-1813), Paulo Ruffini (1765-1822), and Evariste Galois (1811-1832) on the theory of algebraic equations. Their groups consisted of permutations of the variables or of the roots of polynomials, and indeed for much of the nineteenth century all groups were finite permutation groups. Nevertheless many of the fundamental ideas of group theory were introduced by these early workers and their successors, Augustin Louis Cauchy (1789-1857), Ludwig Sylow (1832-1918), Camille Jordan (1838-1922) among others. The concept of an abstract group is clearly recognizable in the work of Arthur Cayley (1821-1895) but it did not really win widespread acceptance until Walther von Dyck (1856-1934) introduced presentations of groups.

Download or read book A Course in Mathematics Vol 2 written by Frederick S. Woods and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course in Mathematics, Vol. 2: For Students in Engineering and Applied Science The subject of integration of functions of a single variable is treated in the first eight chapters. Emphasis is here laid upon the fundamental processes, and the conception of the definite integral and its numerous applications are early introduced. Only after the student is well grounded in these matters are the more special methods of evaluating integrals discussed. In this way the student's interest is early aroused in the use of the subject, and he is drilled in those processes which occur in subsequent practice. A new feature of this part of the book is a chapter on simple differential equations in close connection with integration and long before the formal study of differential equations. Download or read book A Course in Mathematics Vol 2 written by Frederick S. Woods and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course in Mathematics, Vol. 2: For Students in Engineering and Applied Science This volume completes the plan of a course in mathematics outlined in the preface to the first volume. The subject of integration of functions of a single variable is treated in the first eight chapters. With the ninth chapter the study of functions of two or more variables is begun. This is introduced and accompanied by the use of the elements of solid analytic geometry, and the treatment of partial differentiation and of multiple integrals is careful and reasonably complete. A special feature here is the chapter on line integrals. This subject, though generally omitted from elementary texts, is needed by most engineering students in their later work. The latter part of the work consists of chapters on series, the complex number, and differential equations. In the treatment of differential equations many things properly belonging to an extended treatise on the subject are omitted in order to give the student a concise working knowledge of the types of equations which occur most often in practice. Book A Course in Mathematical Analysis Volume 2 Metric and Topological Spaces Functions of a Vector Variable

Download or read book A Course in Mathematical Analysis Volume 2 Metric and Topological Spaces Functions of a Vector Variable written by D. J. H. Garling and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-23 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three volumes of A Course in Mathematical Analysis provide a full and detailed account of all those elements of real and complex analysis that an undergraduate mathematics student can expect to encounter in their first two or three years of study. Containing hundreds of exercises, examples and applications, these books will become an invaluable resource for both students and teachers. Volume 1 focuses on the analysis of real-valued functions of a real variable. This second volume goes on to consider metric and topological spaces. Topics such as completeness, compactness and connectedness are developed, with emphasis on their applications to analysis. This leads to the theory of functions of several variables. Differential manifolds in Euclidean space are introduced in a final chapter, which includes an account of Lagrange multipliers and a detailed proof of the divergence theorem. Volume 3 covers complex analysis and the theory of measure and integration.

Download or read book A Course in Algebra written by Ėrnest Borisovich Vinberg and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Great book! The author's teaching experinece shows in every chapter. --Efim Zelmanov, University of California, San Diego Vinberg has written an algebra book that is excellent, both as a classroom text or for self-study. It is plain that years of teaching abstract algebra have enabled him to say the right thing at the right time. --Irving Kaplansky, MSRI This is a comprehensive text on modern algebra written for advanced undergraduate and basic graduate algebra classes. The book is based on courses taught by the author at the Mechanics and Mathematics Department of Moscow State University and at the Mathematical College of the Independent University of Moscow. The unique feature of the book is that it contains almost no technically difficult proofs. Following his point of view on mathematics, the author tried, whenever possible, to replace calculations and difficult deductions with conceptual proofs and to associate geometric images to algebraic objects. Another important feature is that the book presents most of the topics on several levels, allowing the student to move smoothly from initial acquaintance to thorough study and deeper understanding of the subject. Presented are basic topics in algebra such as algebraic structures, linear algebra, polynomials, groups, as well as more advanced topics like affine and projective spaces, tensor algebra, Galois theory, Lie groups, associative algebras and their representations. Some applications of linear algebra and group theory to physics are discussed. Written with extreme care and supplied with more than 200 exercises and 70 figures, the book is also an excellent text for independent study.
