The entire course covers the work usually required of a student in his first two years in an engineering school, the first volume containing the work of the first year. In arranging the material, however, the traditional division of mathematics into distinct subjects is disregarded, and the principles of each subject are introduced as needed and the subjects developed together. The objects are to give the student a better grasp of mathematics as a whole, and of the interdependence of its various parts, and to accustom him to use, in later applications, the method best adapted to the problem in hand. At the same time a decided advantage is gained in the introduction of the principles of analytic geometry and calculus earlier than is usual. In this way these subjects are studied longer than is otherwise possible, thus leading to greater familiarity with their methods and greater freedom and skill in their application. In carrying out this plan in detail the subject-matter of this volume is arranged as follows: 1. An introductory chapter on elimination, including the use of determinants. This chapter may be postponed or omitted, if a teacher prefers, without seriously affecting the subsequent work. 2. Graphical representation.
