Book The Teaching of Latin in Secondary Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teaching of Latin in Secondary Schools Classic Reprint written by Eugene A. Hecker and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Latin in Secondary Schools The keynote of modern pedagogy is a protest against tradition, whether in subject-matter or in methods of presentation. No subject of instruction has, when compared with other studies of the curriculum, so long a tradition behind it as has Latin. Inasmuch as every study in our modern system of education must, as is fitting, prove its ability to secure a definite result of actual worth, we shall first attempt to ascertain what credentials it needs to present to prove its right of admission as a subject of instruction. Unless a study can be correlated with something in the lives of our pupils - we are dealing with boys and girls of high-school age - then that study is useless; as idle as the inquiries of Tiberius at Capri when he wished to discover what song it was that the Sirens sang. It is true, that the mere fact of knowing something - Ah! la belle chose que de savoir quelque chose! - may enthuse a student for the moment, no matter whether the thing learned has some connection with vital matters or not; but later, when he perceives its isolation, the reaction may take the form of a violent protest against the whole subject of which the mental gymnastic was a part. Of this fact the writer can recall two instances, the one connected with arithmetic, the other with English grammar. His teacher in arithmetic insisted that in a case of division of fractions he must not invert the divisor and multiply, but work instead by the method of finding a greatest common divisor. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Latin IN the course of twelve years' experience in teaching Latin to beginners, the writer has become convinced of two facts: The first is that a textbook for secondary schools should be written from the standpoint of the secondary school, and therefore by a person who is familiar, from actual experience, with the condi tions of the classroom. Most of our textbooks for pupils begin ning Latin, however admirable in other respects, are written in such a way as to require for intelligent comprehension consider ably more maturity of judgment and understanding than the average beginner in Latin can be expected to possess. The second of these facts is that a book to be of the greatest help to the teacher, and thus secure the best results, should be so ar ranged as to enable the teacher to concentrate energy upon one thing at a time. Book Applied Latin

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Latin: A Course for Beginners After an experience of several years teaching in College and High School, the author has become convinced that the present First Year books do not satisfy modern needs in the teaching of Latin nor do they handle the subject in a manner that produces the greatest good for the greatest number of students. I. The Beginners' books in present use have been written too much for the small number of students who intend to go to College, and too little for the great number who study Latin only during two or three years of High School work. Within the last few years the makers of High _school curricula have been forced to pay more attention to the demands of the great mass of students who go no further than the High School. Courses more nearly related to their needs in later life as citizens and workers have been adopted. Traditional courses which gained reputations as valuable only for College students have been disregarded by the authorities and neglected by the students. Latin, especially, has been attacked as an educational luxury, be cause laymen have thought that the net results of the study do not justify the outlay of so much valuable time. Too often no definite advance could be pointed out as the result of the first year's study even by the teachers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Latin IN the following pages I have attempted to show what a classical course can do for a boy, even though the time devoted to it be strictly limited. Many believe that classics are a good thing, but that they take up more hours Of the time-table than can be spared. This I think is an error. Chapters II., III. And IV. Contain a discussion Of the methods Of Latin teaching for the first three years. I have kept in view not only the boy with a genius for classics, who will flourish under any system, but also that Often neglected person, the average boy. The teaching Of Greek is not discussed here. I believe it should follow the lines Of Latin teaching. Progress, however, is much more rapid, because there is no need to spend time in learn ing again principles Of language already learnt in the Latin course. Book A New Second Latin Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book A New Second Latin Book Classic Reprint written by Charles H. Beeson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-05 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Second Latin Book But the right of Caesar to occupy not alone the center of the stage but the whole stage as well, in the second year of Latin study, has been justly and successfully challenged. During the last few years a very general call has been heard for an easier, better graded, richer second year program in Latin than the study of Caesar alone affords. Not only have secondary teachers urged this change, but college professors and administrative officers have generally approved the plan, and accepted this more varied program in lieu of their long established requirements in Caesar. The Second Latin Book which is herewith presented to the public, is intended to meet this need. It makes no pro fessions of originality so far as the plan is concerned of presenting selections from other authors supplementary 'to Caesar. Its reason for existence lies in the consistent work ing out of this plan: in the attempt to make the work of this most critical period in the study of Latin so attractive that the student will be drawn on by a real pleasure in the work itself; so well-graded, that he will never find it hope lessly beyond his powers; so varied, that he will never lose interest through the monotony of his task. Book The Twentieth Century Latin Book

Download or read book The Twentieth Century Latin Book written by Alexis Eugene Senftner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Twentieth Century Latin-Book: For Regents' Schools, High Schools and Academies In submitting The Twentieth Century latin-book to the attention of the public, the aim of the authors has been to edit a work of practical utility, representative of the latest and most approved methods of teaching the first year of Latin. This text book is the outcome of fifteen years of practical experience in teaching Latin. During these fifteen years the authors have prepared nearly three thousand students for the entrance examinations in Latin held by the various Universities - 'columbia, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, New York University, etc., - and for the examinations in Latin held under the auspices of the Regents of the University Of the State of New York. The time intervening between the completion of a course in English Grammar and the beginning of a course in Latin has made it desirable to incorporate in the book a brief summary of the essentials Of English Grammar necessary to the study Of the first year of Latin. This feature of the book will prove to be of value to the student. As a beginner's progress is measured by, the rapidity with which he acquires a sufficiently large vocabulary, and also by the facility with which he is able to analyze sentence-con struction, a large and varied vocabulary has been used through out the book, together with sentences calling for a generous use Of these vocabularies. The vocabularies, as well as the sentences based thereon, have been made to conform as closely as possible to the text of Caesar. For the convenience of the teacher and for the further improve ment Of the-student, many review exercises both on vocabulary and sentence-construction have been inserted. Book The First Latin Course

Download or read book The First Latin Course written by Robert Zaslavsky and published by . This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Zaslavsky's The First Latin Course is informed by a double recognition: First, the recognition that the characteristics of a language must be presented in a holistic, rather than in a fragmented, way. Such an approach allows students to gain a comprehensive conceptual grasp of the characteristics of the language to be learned. Second, the recognition that there has been a neglect even an outright abjuration of the teaching of English grammar that has prevailed in our schools for at least a third of a century, which means that our students come to us grammar poor. This textbook aims to enrich students grammatically by providing a comprehensive explanation of both English and Latin grammar. This makes it as useful to English teachers as a reference source as it is to Latin teachers. The following are the features that distinguish this Latin textbook from the others that are currently available: (1) It provides a clear explanation of the kind of language that Latin is (as opposed to English). (2) It provides a clear and workable guide to translating from Latin into English. (3) It provides detailed, step-by-step instructions for the construction of all Latin forms. (4) It provides straightforward explanations (without superfluous refinements) of Latin grammar and syntax. (5) It provides a full explanation of the English grammar that students need. (6) It provides and employs rational and consistent principles of translation. (7) It provides copious paradigms and a plethora of useful supplementary materials. (8) It is, out of a commitment to linguistic precision, rigorously non-sexist in its language use.
