Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Latin Readings The present volume is put forth as an attempt at the partial solution of the vexed question of early reading material in Latin. The call for variety in the Latin authors read in American Preparatory Schools has recently been accentuated by the Report of the Committee on Secondary School Studies, presented to the National Educational Association in 1893. The objections to the exclusive use of Caesar's Commentaries as an introduction to the Latin language are set forth at length in that Report, and are so well known that a repetition of them here is not necessary. Book A First Year Latin Course

Download or read book A First Year Latin Course written by James B. Smiley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Year Latin Course The aim of this book is to furnish to the pupil an adequate preparation for the intelligent reading of Caesar. Its vocabulary consists almost entirely of words used at least five times in the Gallic War or the Civil War. Many of them are common to Caesar, Nepos, and the Viri Romae, and many are found also in Cicero and Vergil. They are mostly of concrete signification and include a number of compound verbs whose meanings are easily derived from those of the primitive verb and the prepositional prefix. Their conquest will afford an efficient help in the sight reading of the second year, as well as in the translation of Caesar. The selection of words has been made by the authors from the texts themselves, and these words have been verified by reference to Lodge's Vocabulary of High School Latin, and Browne's Latin Word-List. The special vocabularies have been gathered into lists which appear at intervals throughout the book, giving opportunity for the study of English derivatives and for almost unlimited exercises in form and construction. The noun and the verb have been treated in alternating series of lessons in such a way as to give variety and scope to the work. The passive voice appears in the twelfth lesson and is used constantly in connection with the active voice to the end of the book. The subjunctive mood has been introduced quite early, and repeated practice in its use provided. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Twentieth Century Latin Book

Download or read book The Twentieth Century Latin Book written by Alexis Eugene Senftner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Twentieth Century Latin-Book: For Regents' Schools, High Schools and Academies In submitting The Twentieth Century latin-book to the attention of the public, the aim of the authors has been to edit a work of practical utility, representative of the latest and most approved methods of teaching the first year of Latin. This text book is the outcome of fifteen years of practical experience in teaching Latin. During these fifteen years the authors have prepared nearly three thousand students for the entrance examinations in Latin held by the various Universities - 'columbia, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, New York University, etc., - and for the examinations in Latin held under the auspices of the Regents of the University Of the State of New York. The time intervening between the completion of a course in English Grammar and the beginning of a course in Latin has made it desirable to incorporate in the book a brief summary of the essentials Of English Grammar necessary to the study Of the first year of Latin. This feature of the book will prove to be of value to the student. As a beginner's progress is measured by, the rapidity with which he acquires a sufficiently large vocabulary, and also by the facility with which he is able to analyze sentence-con struction, a large and varied vocabulary has been used through out the book, together with sentences calling for a generous use Of these vocabularies. The vocabularies, as well as the sentences based thereon, have been made to conform as closely as possible to the text of Caesar. For the convenience of the teacher and for the further improve ment Of the-student, many review exercises both on vocabulary and sentence-construction have been inserted. Book A First Latin Reader

Download or read book A First Latin Reader written by Herbert Chester Nutting and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Latin Reader: With Exercises With the Primer previously published, this Reader pro vides for a course of study leading up to Caesar or some other author of like difficulty. Students who are to give five years or more to preparatory Latin would normally devote a year each to the Primer and the Reader; but the maturer pupils in the four-year course will cover easily in their first year the work outlined in both books. It is hoped too, that, aside from use in this regular sequence, the Reader will be found to meet the needs of many teachers who are looking for a carefully graded text for supplementary reading or for translation at Sight. The plan for beginning Latin embodied in Primer and Reader differs from others most fundamentally, per haps, in that it concentrates so definitely upon the problem of developing the student's power to read Latin; and it is quite in harmony with that general design that this second book is called a Reader, and that in it the latin-english exercises are massed at one point, with notes at the foot of the page.
