Book excerpt: Excerpt from Civil Government: Of the United States and the State of Missouri When the State text-book Commission met in the year 1897 to adopt a series Of text-books for use in public schools, about thirty civil governments were submitted for adoption. None Of them was satisfactory. Thereupon members Of the commission who were acquainted with my School History Of Missouri suggested that I write and submit a manuscript Of a Civil Government. I did so, and it was adopted, and for five years after its publication it had a large place in the schools. Subsequently the book was entirely rewritten and a revised edition brought out in 1904, and with a few minor changes in the text made necessary by changes in laws and constitutions has been in general use ever since. Within the last year the book has been thoroughly revised again. In the natural evolution of the government Of a great people new institutions are added in the course Of a few years and things once unimportant assume large proportions; they call for new sections, and these have been added. Other things have become less important, and the discussion Of them has been accordingly reduced. Every sentence Of former texts retained in this has been rigidly tested, in order to bring it strictly up to date and make it accurately express the fact. The result is a book brought down in every sentence to the date Of publication. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Civil Government It is too true, that while we, as a nation, are constantly re ferring to Constitutional rights and Obligations, not one young man In a thousand examines the text Of the Constitution, but expects the knowledge needed in the exciting events Of our political life as a people will come without study and without reflection: The times in which we are living will make all see the necessity for the study Of the Constitution In our pub lic schools, if we would rightly educate the young in the essen tial principles Of our national government. The maintenance Of these principles by an honest, intelligent discharge Of the duties arising from an almost universal right Of suffrage by the people can be best preserved only through universality Of correct Opinions respecting the fundamental Law and the institutions existing by its authority. In this new and enlarged edition such additions have been made as the Amendments to the Constitution and the Decisions of the Courts render necessary. The author acknowledges his Obli gations to the Judges Of the Supreme Court Of Illinois for suggestions and additions, which are included in this edition. The Constitution Of Illinois, Of 1870, is inserted after the Manual on the Constitution Of the United States. Book The Citizen and the Republic

Download or read book The Citizen and the Republic written by James Albert Woodburn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Citizen and the Republic: A d104-Book in Government His volume is intended as a text - book for use in courses in Civil Government in secondary schools. It should (6 follow, or accompany, a high school course in American History. It is an attempt to answer the demand for that if Which is needful and important in the new civics some times called community civics, and at the same time to hold fast to that Which is good in the old. S, In introducing an educational reform there is always Q danger of over - emphasis; there is danger that we may not ?%have a good thing Without having too much of it. The '9 authors of this volume, While emphasizing community civics and the moral purposes in teaching government, have sought to avoid a one - sided course. They believe that the schools should study the community and such new civics as the changing times call for, and especially that they should give attention to current history and present day problems of democracy; but it is equally important not 3 to neglect certain aspects of the old established order. It may be well to set pupils to the laboratory method of studying the g actual life of our city communities, how milk and water are g supplied, how food is distributed, how public health is pre ss served, how the streets are kept clean (or dirty), how the taxes are raised and used, and how the schools are sustained. But to limit a high school coursein civics to such a field of study is to commit a great wrong to young people Who are under training for citizenship. Book Our Civic Image and Our Governments Classic Reprint

Download or read book Our Civic Image and Our Governments Classic Reprint written by Henry Hardin Cherry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Civic Image and Our Governments Our government grew out of character. It sprang from the lives of men. Its organization was the result of conscience implanted in man and of character developed by him. Patriotism and character are closely related terms. An earnest attempt has been made in this book to place upon the hearts of the people the responsibility of being citizens of the United States. The only thing new or original the author claims is in bringing man closer to government and government _closer to man; in showing the close analogy between individual character and national character; and in pointing out the likeness of the form of our government to the nature and being of man of self-government to civil government. The study of civil government is usually regarded as a dry and uninteresting subject. The author has endeavored in the preparation of this course of study to make it an interest ing and readable, as well as a logical, treatise upon the subject of govern ments. While it is impossible to give a publication of this kind the thrilling interest that characterizes some books, yet it is earnestly hoped that the attention of the reader will be held. Whoever opens this book with [a view of reading its pages and noting the parallel between soul government and civil government, will find it to his interest to study carefully the accompanying chart. It suggests more than it tells in words. It is an outline of the contents of the book. It is a part of this preface. As far as the author knows, this is the first book on Civics that has been highly illustrated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Civil Government Classic Reprint

Download or read book Civil Government Classic Reprint written by Paul S. Reinsch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Civil Government People should be able to see for themselves and interpret the meaning of what is going on around them. For this reason there have been added to each chapter a few questions to be answered by the pupil himself after inquiry and observa tion. These are, of course, only in the. Nature of suggestions to the teacher. The information is not to be taken from books, but is to be oh tained through personal inquiry. The intelligent use of newspaper information, too, may be taught in this connection. Often these questions will be designed also to train the judgment in that they will call for a decision between two alterna tives. The study of political action offers a rare Opportunity for training the power of observa tion as well as the judgment. As in the natural sciences, a pupil must learn to observe accurately and to judge of what he sees. It is apparent that a republic is especially in need of citizens who are able to do their own thinking, and to see the real through the veil of outward appear anoes.
