Book A Counselor s Poetic Guide Through the Grief Journey

Download or read book A Counselor s Poetic Guide Through the Grief Journey written by Natalie Ross and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-27 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author is not only a counselor but a mother who has experienced a great loss, the loss of her child. She takes you on a journey with her as she unpacks her grief on paper through poetry; but, she also gives the reader tools to be able to move through their grief process. Here is an excerpt from her book, A Counselor's Poetic Guide Through the Grief Journey: "My words used to hide in my chest like the extremities of a turtle in uncharted territories. Like many of you, writing poetry as a child and adolescent helped me express myself and overcome being shy. In high school, two friends and I collaborated on a poem about family trauma and death loss. The piece brought our classroom to tears and revealed to me the moving power of words. For the next decade, life happenings took precedence over my writing. However, when my son Nathaniel "Peanut" died, I desperately needed to unhook from the anchor of despair. Poetry was my expressive homeland. Now, the prodigal daughter, I found my way back to writing. The healing power of spoken word became clear when I expanded beyond writing poems to performing at open mic events. The mutual support we created, as we shared the underbelly parts of our circumstances, filled me with hope." Here you can be free to unpack whatever it is you need to heal from but may have been unable to. This book is also a tool for other counselors to use with their clients who may be suffering during a difficult loss in their lives.

Book excerpt: Reclaim Your Headspace and Find Your One True Voice As a hospital chaplain, J.S. Park encountered hundreds of patients at the edge of life and death, listening as they urgently shared their stories, confessions, and final words. J.S. began to identify patterns in his patients’ lives—patterns he also saw in his own life. He began to see that the events and traumas we experience throughout life become deafening voices that remain within us, even when the events are far in the past. He was surprised to find that in hearing the voices of his patients, he began to identify his own voices and all the ways they could both harm and heal. In The Voices We Carry, J.S. draws from his experiences as a hospital chaplain to present the Voices Model. This model explores the four internal voices of self-doubt, pride, people-pleasing, and judgment, and the four external voices of trauma, guilt, grief, and family dynamics. He also draws from his Asian-American upbringing to examine the challenges of identity and feeling “other.” J.S. outlines how to wrestle with our voices, and even befriend them, how to find our authentic voice in a world of mixed messages, and how to empower those who are voiceless. Filled with evidence-based research, spiritual and psychological insights, and stories of patient encounters, The Voices We Carry is an inspiring memoir of unexpected growth, humor, and what matters most. For those wading through a world of clamor and noise, this is a guide to find your clear, steady voice.

Book And My Tears Fell Like Rain

Download or read book And My Tears Fell Like Rain written by Sandra McNamara and published by . This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of poetry was written to help those who are grieving the loss of someone. Grieving is a process that you will go through in your own time, in your own way. If you can't work through the steps of grieving then you can't move on with your life. Some days it will seem that you will never move on but the truth is, you will. According to professionals we go through seven stages of grieving...shock & denial, pain & guilt, anger & bargaining, depression, not necessarily in this order. My personal experience with the loss of my husband was the most traumatic event in my life. I've gone through all the stages of grieving and to this day I still have my moments. It seems like the roller coaster of the loss never will end, but at least now I can focus on the more pleasant times we shared. One of the best things I did for myself was go to a grief counselor to try to sort my emotions out. This may be something you might consider too. I had to remember that their were people in my life that wanted the old me back. Even sitting here typing these words cause tears to well up. They are right when they say you will eventually move on but the pain will never go away. Death leaves a hole in your heart that can't be filled. The poems inside were written to invoke the sadness of your loss through your tears. Crying is a way of healing. As you read these poems let your tears fall like rain. I wish you well on your journey through this phase of your life and there is indeed life after a death.

Book Grief Is a Journey

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kenneth J. Doka
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster

  • Pages : 316 pages

Download or read book Grief Is a Journey written by Kenneth J. Doka and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this “volume of rare sensitivity, penetrating understanding, and profound insights” (Rabbi Earl A. Grollman, author of Living When a Loved One Has Died), Dr. Kenneth Doka explores a new, compassionate way to grieve, explaining that grief is not an illness to get over but an individual and ongoing journey. There is no “one-size-fits-all” way to cope with loss. The vital bonds that we form with those we love in life continue long after death—in very different ways. Grief Is a Journey is the first book to overturn prevailing, often judgmental, ideas about grief and replace them with a hopeful, inclusive, personalized, and research-backed approach. New science and studies behind Dr. Doka’s teaching upend the dominant but incorrect view that grief proceeds by stages. Dr. Doka helps us realize that our experiences following a death are far more individual and much less predictable than the conventional “five stages” model would have us believe. Common patterns of experiencing and expressing grief still prevail, yet many other life changes accompany a primary loss. For example, the deaths of parents, even for adults, modify family patterns, change relationships, and alter old family rituals. Unique to this book, Dr. Doka also explains how to cope with disenfranchised grief—the types of loss that are not so readily recognized or supported by society. These include the death of ex-spouses, as well as non-fatal losses such as divorce, the end of a friendship, job loss, or infertility. In addition, Dr. Doka considers losses that might be stigmatized, including death by suicide or from disease or self-destructive behaviors such as smoking or alcoholism. And finally, Dr. Doka reminds us that, however painful, grief provides opportunities for growth.

Book Through the Lens of the Broken

Download or read book Through the Lens of the Broken written by Vanilla Lee and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-10 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you. (Isaiah 43:2 NKJV)Through the Lens of the Broken is a poetic journey that weaves in and out of the stages of grief. In the poem "A Gripping Force," Lee clearly paints a picture of the first stage of grief, by far the most acute stage. "A Need for Healing" is a prayer request for the healing of a wound caused by grief. "Feeling the Fog" is so startlingly real it is almost as if it is personified. In the end there is the final stage of grief acceptance and evidence that Lee has moved through the stages of grief with the Comforter who has been holding her and guiding her all along the way (Isaiah 41:10 NIV). Lee's grief journey does not end with the last poem in the book because we traverse through the stages of grief as we remember our loved ones. Grace BridgefordThis book of poems expresses an honest, heart-wrenching journey of emotions one might experience after the loss of a loved one. To navigate in this emotional darkness, we must carry God's word as our light by meditating on the scriptures that Ms. Lee so skillfully matched to each poem. This collection will make you rethink how you pray and bring you closer to God in the process. Audrey Dibble

Download or read book Love Shines written by Lawrence Christensen and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poems in this book have been written within the months of November 2013 to February 2014 when I left my native country Denmark for a sabbatical in Australia. Although this was a significant change in geography for me, a much more profound shift was happening in my inner life and geography. The poems were written during a period of my life, where a process of transformation caused intense grief and suffering on a scale I have never experienced before. It was like my Soul urged - or almost demanded - me to let go of the old, and to surrender to the new, whatever that was going to be. Symbolically a question of life or death. At the age of 55 my dear wife, Hennie, bless her forever, died of cancer after 81/2 years of bravely battling this mighty opponent. In the end she had the courage to surrender to the fact, that she was going to die. She passed away, while I was lying besides her holding her hand. That was a tremendous loss, and my grieving at first seemed bottomless, but somehow the Grace of God saved me from falling into the deepest abyss of existential crisis until later, when spirit in its infinite wisdom knew I was somewhat more ready and resilient. My reason for writing this book is to help others in the same situation. If I can relieve just a little of their grief and suffering, their hardships and heartache, their desperation and sadness, I am more than satisfied. In fact I dont want anyone to go through the agony of the heart I did, though it seems to be an important - and maybe unavoidable - part of the spiritual journey of a human bein

Book The Butterfly on My Shoulder

Download or read book The Butterfly on My Shoulder written by Helene Levin and published by . This book was released on 2009-10 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Butterfly On My Shoulder is an inspiring book composed of poems and commentary about the grief process. Its purpose is to share the love, pain and growth that so many have lived through and to inspire healing by all who grieve. This book lets mourners know that they are not alone and they are not going crazy, they are grieving and they can heal. It was written over a 22 year period by a mother after the death of her 24 year old son by suicide in 1986. Many of the poems have been previously published in newsletters, brochures and on the internet. They have proven to be very encouraging to those who grieve by helping them to deal with and understand their grieving journey. The book offers a clear explanation of the grief journey and grief process as experienced from the perspective of all family members, friends and fellow grievers in fourteen chapters. The chapters are divided by the stages and the friend or family member's perspective. The poems and commentary offer suggestions and information about helpful methods and modalities that a grieving person can use to better negotiate the different stages of grief. The author uses her experiences and education as the Executive Director/CEO of the Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention, Inc. and a member of the Florida State Suicide Prevention Coordinating Council to explain and share the experiences of thousands of grieving individuals which she has come in contact with over the last 22 years. The commentary and poems express the perspective of both the author and survivors with which she has worked and describes their pain and ultimate healing. This book is a useful tool for anyone who is grieving the loss of a loved one including those dealing with a death by suicide.
