As a result, three primary factors that influence the retention and persistence rates of African American men in the community college setting were examined: a lack of campus belonging, social support, and academic self-efficacy. Research had indicated that social support networks, including faculty and staff members, strong peer relationships, and supportive mentors and counselors, are essential elements that contribute to the success of this population of students. As such, this project proposes a cognitive behavioral counseling group for African American male community college students that will help promote a sense of campus belonging, encourage the application of social support systems throughout the duration of their academic careers, and increase their academic identity and self-efficacy. The proposed counseling group intervention is specifically tailored to address the obstacles, trials, and tribulations that African American men face while in community college, and is designed to increase persistence and retention rates within this population of students by meeting their academic, social, and emotional needs" -- Abstract, p. 1.

Many social scientists have noted that Black men account for only 4.3% of the total enrollment at 4-year postsecondary institutions in the United States, the same percentage now as in 1976.
