Book excerpt: Injured Cougar is a romantic fantasy about a senior woman who has reached a crossroads in her life. After working for forty-five years in difficult, high-stress jobs, she now finds herself in retirement and in a round-the-clock care-giver role supporting her 97 year-old mother. After her mother's death, she discovers that she is rapidly losing her health. She will soon be a cripple and painfully wheel-chair bound unless she takes draconian measures to save herself. Still a spry, attractive-looking woman who could pass for a woman ten years younger, she is still slim, knows how to dress well and is intellectually capable and fun-loving. She tells herself that she "has just begun to fight and this time the fight is for her." She searches for the best orthopedic surgeon to perform two difficult joint replacement operations-a total knee replacement and a hip revision and a second hip replacement on the same hip. She makes an excellent choice in the surgeon-one of the best in North America. Then she discovers that he has a dark secret that she must share with him in order to survive. She ends up saving them both.

Book Yellowstone Cougar

Book excerpt: Jillian was willing to sacrifice anything to protect her family - that is until she discovered the dark secret, they’d been keeping from her all her life. The unspoiled splendor of Yellowstone is ruled by a council of shifters - the leaders of the wolf, cougar, and bear factions maintaining an uneasy alliance to ensure peace and prosperity for all. Now, however, there’s a new territory to be fought over - the digital landscape of Faedom. A sprawling cyberverse created by software CEO Carter Edgerton, Faedom tasks players with defending the realm from the influence of dark, otherworldly magic. Few players are aware, however, that this is a duty Carter is burdened with in real life. As alpha of Yellowstone’s cougar shifters, he’s been groomed since birth to put the safety and security of his pride above all else. But that priority is challenged when he meets Jillian Jones - or, at least, meets her digital avatar in Faedom. Despite knowing her animosity to shifters and her allegiance to her foster family, Carter can’t help but feel drawn to this tough, guarded young woman; and their attraction extends to the real world, as well. But Jillian has a secret so dark she’s barely even aware of it herself - and when that truth comes to light, it threatens to shatter not just the peace between the Yellowstone shifters, but the veil between realities itself. Yellowstone Cougar is an instantly addictive paranormal romance set in the world of Jaylee Austin’s thrilling Sarim Prince series - described by readers as “utterly stunning” and filled with “plenty of heartache and mystery.”

Book Living in the Appalachian Forest

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thought-provoking look at how man and nature co-exist, somewhat uneasily, within the Appalachian Forest, the world's most diverse temperate woodlands, 80 percent of which is privately owned-by the ancestors of homesteaders, outsiders who have bought large and small tracts, absentee landlords and landowners, private groups and institutions, and giant corporations. Interviews with a diverse group of landowners -- a horse logger, a selective cutter, a ginseng grower, a clear cutter, a forest steward, a summer-camp owner, and others -- and the author's own experiences as a landowner illustrate the private forest's past, present, and future.

Book Female Celebrity and Ageing

Download or read book Female Celebrity and Ageing written by Deborah Jermyn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Female Celebrity and Ageing: Back in the Spotlight interrogates the myriad ways in which celebrity culture constructs highly visible ideologies of femininity and ageing, and how ageing female celebrities have negotiated the media in a variety of industrial, historical and national contexts. In the era when the ‘baby boomers’ have started drawing their pensions, the boundaries of what constitutes ‘old age’ have never seemed more fluid, and ageing has never been presented by advertisers and marketers in a more dynamic fashion. However, the fact remains that ageing is still widely feared, and growing old is an inherently gendered process, in which ageing women are paradoxically both rendered invisible and subjected to damning scrutiny. Nowhere is this conflicting state of affairs more evident than in celebrity culture, where ageing female stars are praised for ‘growing old gracefully’ one moment, and condemned for ‘letting themselves go’ the next, when they fail to age ‘appropriately’. Examining a variety of themes and ageing women in the spotlight, from Barbara Stanwyck to Madonna to Charlotte Rampling, the essays collected here forge new critical and conceptual insights into how women grow older in the media, and the implications of this for what Susan Sontag memorably called "the double standard of ageing". This book is based on a special issue of Celebrity Studies.
