Book excerpt: Copperplate Script - A Yin & Yang Approach by Paul Antonio, is an innovative, new technology applied to an historical script. The script presented in this manual is not an historical hand, but a geometric construct to aid in a more exacting understanding of the script. This construct assists with writing a cleaner and more beautiful copperplate script. The Technology reintroduces a comprehensive terminology for the parts of the letters - words used by the English Writing Masters in their Copybooks, in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, as well as additional names augmented from the historical record. Geometry and physics are used to explain how a curve works and where it sits in relation to the baseline. This concept, then compares how a car or a bicycle tackles a roundabout.Learning the skeletal forms, similar to learning Roman Capitals, is a key part of the manual. The process begins with using a pencil first, followed by the nib.The over-arching concept of the technology utilises 4Fold Symmetry. There are four facets in the 4Fold Symmetry, all of which have 2 aspects; simple and complex. Angular Confinement is the first facet. It shows how confining the curves, inside a plane sided figure (in this case a parallelogram), is like drawing a square to plot a circle.Additional pages of study include an extensive list of difficult-to-write practise words, exemplars of numbers and variations, ligatures of double letters and ampersands. Sections on Brush Copperplate, Flourishing and its rules, as well as a glossary, augment this fine body of work. This manual offers an extensive, in-depth study of Copperplate Script suitable for any level of ability and an extraordinary resource for the beginner, intermediate or advanced calligrapher.

Book Copper Plate Photogravure

Download or read book Copper Plate Photogravure written by David Morrish and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-04-03 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Copper Plate Photogravure describes in comprehensive detail the technique of traditional copper plate photogravure as would be practiced by visual artists using normally available facilities and materials. Attention is paid to step-by-step guidance through the many stages of the process. A detailed manual of technique, Copper Plate Photogravure also offers the history of the medium and reference to past alternative methods of practice. Copper Plate Photogravure: Demystifying the Process is part of the current revitalization of one of the most satisfyingly beautiful image-making processes. The range of ink color and paper quality possibilities is endless. The potential for handwork and alteration of the copper plate provides yet another realm of expressive variation. The subject matter and the treatment are as variable and broad as photography itself. This book's purpose is to demystify and clarify what is a complex but altogether "do-able" photomechanical process using currently available materials. With Copper Plate Photogravure, you will learn how to: · produce a full-scale film positive from a photographic negative · sensitize the gravure tissue to prepare it for exposure to the positive · prepare the plate and develop the gelatin resist prior to etching · prepare the various strengths of etching solutions and etch the plate to achieve a full tonal scale · rework the plate using printmaking tools to correct flaws or to adjust the image for aesthetic reasons · use the appropriate printing inks, ink additives, quality papers, and printshop equipment to produce a high quality print A historical survey and appendices of detailed technical information, charts, and tables are included, as well as a list of suppliers and sources for the materials required, some of which are highly specialized. A comprehensive glossary introduces the non-photographer or non-printmaker to many of the terms particular to those fields and associated with this process.

Calligraphy remains perennially popular, often adorning wedding invitations, diplomas, and commercial signs. Whether it is Roman, Gothic, Celtic, Bookhand, or Italic style, calligraphy conveys class and elegance. Margaret Shepherd makes this ancient art form accessible in a completely hand-lettered technical guide that will: * Provide context for calligraphy as an art, exploring the rich tradition of hand-lettering and mapping the evolution of the most popular styles. * Give detailed technical advice on choosing pens, paper, and inks, setting up your workspace, mastering various pen angles, along with step-by-step illustrations to guide you as you practice. * Explain which alphabets are appropriate for different forms of writing. For example, the Roman alphabet works well for short, unpunctuated passages, while the Italic alphabet is more suited to informal everyday communication. * Encourage you to personalize your lettering by using variant strokes and interpreting how you would like the words to look on the page. * Inspire you with carefully chosen illustrations and examples, which bring letters to life. Book excerpt: This calligraphy book takes the reader through step by step instructions to learn how to letter Cadels. A cadel is a letter composed of a series of tape-like strokes, which are nearly parallel, and are interwoven and knotted together to produce a complete letter. These capital letters were used as a single initial letter (versal) or multiple letters. The oldest known cadel found was in the illuminated prayer book, the Tres Riches Heures de Duc de Berry made by the Limboug Brothers. In 1409, Jean Flamel, the Duc's Secretary, inscribed the title page of the book with cadels. He incorporated the cadels into the letter's stems, producing an overall texture to the whole page. Since there is no standard exemplar for this lettering style, this book covers many ways a calligrapher can create these beautiful capitals by either following the historical version or creating their own style.
