Book excerpt: This volume of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series contains all the papers accepted for presentationat the second IEEE InternationalWorkshopon Self-Managed Networks, Systems and Services (SelfMan 2006), which was held at University College Dublin, Ireland on June 16, 2006. This workshop follows up on a very successful edition that took place last year in Nice, France. The online proceedings of SelfMan 2005 are available at http://madynes.loria.fr/selfman2005/. The objectives of this year's edition were to bring together people from d- ferent communities (networking, distributed systems, softwareengineering, P2P, service engineering, distributed arti?cial intelligence, robotics, etc.) and cro- pollinatetheir experienceindesigningandimplementingself-managednetworks, systems and services. We received 51 papers from 21 countries, of which 12 were selected. The - ceptance ratio was below 24%. In addition, we selected three work-in-progress papers for short presentations. This one-day event was structured so as to - courage discussions and foster collaborations. The breadth of the topics presented herein re?ects the current interest and developments in this rapidly growing?eld. It is also a testimony to the promises of self-management to design, operate and manage today's increasingly complex and heterogeneous networks, systems and services.

Book Semantic Management of Middleware

Download or read book Semantic Management of Middleware written by Daniel Oberle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-05-28 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current middleware solutions, e.g., application servers and Web services, are very complex software products that are hard to tame because of intricacies of distributed systems. Their functionalities have mostly been developed and managed with the help of administration tools and corresponding configuration files, recently in XML. Though this constitutes flexibility for developing and administrating a distributed application, the conceptual model underlying the different configurations is only implicit. To remedy such problems, Semantic Management of Middleware contributes an ontology-based approach to support the development and administration of middleware-based applications. The ontology is an explicit conceptual model with formal logic-based semantics. Its descriptions may therefore be queried, may foresight required actions, or may be checked to avoid inconsistent system configurations. This book builds a rigorous approach towards giving the declarative descriptions of components and services a well-defined meaning by specifying ontological foundations and by showing how such foundations may be realized in practical, up-and-running systems.

Book Assurances for Self Adaptive Systems

Download or read book Assurances for Self Adaptive Systems written by Javier Cámara and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-01-16 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing complexity of systems and the growing uncertainty in their operational environments have created a critical need to develop systems able to improve their operation, adapt to change, and recover from failures autonomously. This situation has led to recent advances in self-adaptive systems able to reconfigure their structure and modify their behavior at run-time to adapt to environmental changes. Despite these advances, one key aspect of self-adaptive systems that remains to be tackled in depth is "assurances": the provision of evidence that the system satisfies its stated functional and non-functional requirements during its operation in the presence of self-adaptation. This book is one of the outcomes of the ESEC/FSE 2011 Workshop on Assurances for Self-Adaptive Systems (ASAS), held in Szeged, Hungary, in September 2011. It contains extended versions of some of the papers presented during the workshop, as well as invited papers from recognized experts. The 12 refereed papers were thoroughly reviewed and selected. The book consists of four parts: formal verification, models and middleware, failure prediction, and assurance techniques.

  • Pages : 381 pages

Download or read book Autonomic Communication written by Athanasios V. Vasilakos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-23 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New paradigms for communication/networking systems are needed in order to tackle the emerging issues such as heterogeneity, complexity and management of evolvable infrastructures. In order to realize such advanced systems, approaches should become task- and knowledge-driven, enabling a service-oriented, requirement, and trust-driven development of communication networks. The networking and seamless integration of concepts, technologies and devices in a dynamically changing environment poses many challenges to the research community, including interoperability, programmability, management, openness, reliability, performance, context awareness, intelligence, autonomy, security, privacy, safety, and semantics. This edited volume explores the challenges of technologies to realize the vision where devices and applications seamlessly interconnect, intelligently cooperate, and autonomously manage themselves, and as a result, the borders of virtual and real world vanish or become significantly blurred.

Book Autonomic Computing

    Book Details:
  • Author : Manish Parashar
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2018-10-03
  • ISBN : 1420009354
  • Pages : 564 pages

Download or read book Autonomic Computing written by Manish Parashar and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complexity of modern computer networks and systems, combined with the extremely dynamic environments in which they operate, is beginning to outpace our ability to manage them. Taking yet another page from the biomimetics playbook, the autonomic computing paradigm mimics the human autonomic nervous system to free system developers and administrators from performing and overseeing low-level tasks. Surveying the current path toward this paradigm, Autonomic Computing: Concepts, Infrastructure, and Applications offers a comprehensive overview of state-of-the-art research and implementations in this emerging area. This book begins by introducing the concepts and requirements of autonomic computing and exploring the architectures required to implement such a system. The focus then shifts to the approaches and infrastructures, including control-based and recipe-based concepts, followed by enabling systems, technologies, and services proposed for achieving a set of "self-*" properties, including self-configuration, self-healing, self-optimization, and self-protection. In the final section, examples of real-world implementations reflect the potential of emerging autonomic systems, such as dynamic server allocation and runtime reconfiguration and repair. Collecting cutting-edge work and perspectives from leading experts, Autonomic Computing: Concepts, Infrastructure, and Applications reveals the progress made and outlines the future challenges still facing this exciting and dynamic field.
