Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to create a solid framework for embedded system design with field-programmable analog arrays (FPAAs). To achieve this goal, we've created a unified approach to the three phases of FPAA system design: (1) the hardware architecture; (2) the circuit design and modeling; and (3) the high-level software tools. First, we describe innovations to the reconfigurable analog hardware that enable advanced signal processing and integration into embedded systems. We introduce the multiple-input translinear element (MITE) FPAA and the dynamically-reconfigurable RASP 2.9v FPAA, which was designed explicitly for interfacing with external digital systems. This compatibility creates a streamlined workflow for dropping the FPAA hardware into mixed-signal embedded systems. The second phase, algorithm analysis and modeling, is important to create a useful and reliable library of components for the system designer. We discuss the concept and procedure of analog abstraction that empowers non-circuit design engineers to take full advantage of analog techniques. We use the analog vector-matrix multiplier as an example for a detailed discussion on computational analog analysis and system mapping to the FPAA. Lastly, we describe high-level software tools, which are an absolute necessity for the design of large systems due to the size and complexity of modern FPAAs. We describe the Sim2Spice tool, which allows system designers to develop signal processing systems in the Simulink environment. The tool then compiles the system to the FPAA hardware. By coordinating the development of these three phases, we've created a solid unified framework that empowers engineers to utilize FPAAs.

Book excerpt: The Cooperative Analog/Digital Signal Processing (CADSP) research group's approach to signal processing is to see what opportunities lie in adjusting the line between what is traditionally computed in digital and what can be done in analog. By allowing more computation to be done in analog, we can take advantage of its low power, continuous domain operation, and parallel capabilities. One setback keeping Analog Signal Processing (ASP) from achieving more wide-spread use, however, is its lack of programmability. The design cycle for a typical analog system often involves several iterations of the fabrication step, which is labor intensive, time consuming, and expensive. These costs in both time and money reduce the likelihood that engineers will consider an analog solution. With CADSP's development of a reconfigurable analog platform, a Field-Programmable Analog Array (FPAA), it has become much more practical for systems to incorporate processing in the analog domain. In this Thesis, I present an entire chain of tools that allow one to design simply at the system block level and then compile that design onto analog hardware. This tool chain uses the Simulink design environment and a custom library of blocks to create analog systems. I also present several of these ASP blocks, covering a broad range of functions from matrix computation to interfacing. In addition to these tools and blocks, the most recent FPAA architectures are discussed. These include the latest RASP general-purpose FPAAs as well as an adapted version geared toward high-speed applications.

Book excerpt: This book presents novel RIS-Based Smart Radio techniques, targeting at achieving high-quality channel links in cellular communications via design and optimization of the RIS construction. Unlike traditional antenna arrays, three unique characteristics of the RIS will be revealed in this book. First, the built-in programmable configuration of the RIS enables analog beamforming inherently without extra hardware or signal processing. Second, the incident signals can be controlled to partly reflect and partly transmit through the RIS simultaneously, adding more flexibility to signal transmission. Third, the RIS has no digital processing capability to actively send signals nor any radio frequency (RF) components. As such, it is necessary to develop novel channel estimation and communication protocols, design joint digital and RIS-based analog beamforming schemes and perform interference control via mixed reflection and transmission. This book also investigates how to integrate the RIS to legacy communication systems. RIS techniques are further investigated in this book (benefited from its ability to actively shape the propagation environment) to achieve two types of wireless applications, i.e., RF sensing and localization. The influence of the sensing objectives on the wireless signal propagation can be potentially recognized by the receivers, which are then utilized to identify the objectives in RF sensing. Unlike traditional sensing techniques, RIS-aided sensing can actively customize the wireless channels and generate a favorable massive number of independent paths interacting with the sensing objectives. It is desirable to design RIS-based sensing algorithms, and optimize RIS configurations. For the second application, i.e., RIS aided localization, an RIS is deployed between the access point (AP) and users. The AP can then analyze reflected signals from users via different RIS configurations to obtain accurate locations of users. However, this is a challenging task due to the dynamic user topology, as well as the mutual influence between multiple users and the RIS. Therefore, the operations of the RIS, the AP, and multiple users need to be carefully coordinated. A new RIS-based localization protocol for device cooperation and an RIS configuration optimization algorithm are also required. This book targets researchers and graduate-level students focusing on communications and networks. Signal processing engineers, computer and information scientists, applied mathematicians and statisticians, who work in RIS research and development will also find this book useful.

Field-programmable analog arrays (FPAAs) built upon floating gate transistor technologies provide the analog reconfigurability and programmability density required for large-scale devices on a single integrated circuit (IC). A wide variety of synthesized circuits, such as OTA followers, band-pass filters, and capacitively coupled summation/difference circuits, were measured to demonstrate the flexibility of FPAAs. Three generations of devices were designed and tested to verify the viability of such floating gate based large-scale FPAAs. Various architectures and circuit topologies were also designed and tested to explore the trade-offs present in reconfigurable analog systems. In addition, large-scale FPAAs have been incorporated into class laboratory exercises, which provide students with a much broader range of circuit and IC design experiences than have been previously possible. By combining reconfigurable analog technologies with an equivalent large-scale digital device, such as a field-programmable gate array (FPGA), an extremely powerful and flexible mixed signal development system can be produced that will enable all of the benefits possible through cooperative analog/digital signal processing (CADSP).
