Book A Conversation About the Good Old Days

Download or read book A Conversation About the Good Old Days written by Doris C. Smith and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2021-10-06 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a child, I really didn't have a relationship with my Father. As a matter of fact, I didn't care for him very much, because I thought he was so mean. It wasn't until I was grown that I found out "who" my Father "really" was. I made many judgements that was not accurate and many things I had to ask the Lord for forgiveness. I had to realize that He wasn't a "perfect man" but He was the Father that was given to me. I saw my Mother go through many things with him. I couldn't understand and sometimes wondered, WHY? Now, I can see her strength. Today, I'm grateful because she's still teaching me , how to be strong. Even though she's deceased, some days I can still hear her voice. Years later, I was sitting and talking with my Father about his life. He shared many things. I found out that he wasn't the "boogey-man" that Satan displayed in my head. So many stories he shared and they were good, as well as funny. I've shared some of them with you. Now, You share them with Your Family. I often say, "Leave a Legacy!" I HOPE YOU ENJOY THE CONVERSATION!

Book Good Old Days

Download or read book Good Old Days written by Bobby Jay Newman and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-04-12 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In discussing the good old days, I have attempted to describe in some detail nearly every aspect as to how things were as I was growing up during those days in a close-knit farming community. Some readers, however, may be more interested in my personal experiences of that time, the more humorous of which having been included. Growing up first without electricity and then without a father inspired my overactive imagination to go wild in creating a wide variety of ways to entertain myself, many of which were unwise and would never have been tolerated had my father lived.

Book The Good Old Days

Download or read book The Good Old Days written by Harold Flagg and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-02-06 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1999, I flew from Fort Lauderdale, FL, to Japan for $28.39 round-trip. Previously, a round-trip from Fort Lauderdale to Turkey cost me $17 and change. On the Turkish flight, a computer glitch wiped out my documentation shortly after I landed in Frankfurt, Germany. To compensate, Delta Air Lines upgraded me to BusinessElite class, featuring free champagne and choice of filet mignon or salmon steak served on a cozy table set with sparkling crystal and the finest silver and china. Most of my caviar lifestyle on a tuna budget has been based on United States Social Security and Bahamas National Insurance payments, having worked many years in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas. Whats the catch? Basically, it was playing the discount-fare and frequent-flier game to the Nth degree, N as in nothing, in many cases. My best free junkets in senior-friendly skies came via Delta Air Lines frequent flier mileage. My Delta SkyMiles were tallied by such senior-citizen bargains as a Fort Lauderdale- Hawaii round-trip ticket for as little as $440. That alone added some 10,000 FF miles to my account. Signing for a Delta SkyMiles credit card netted 10,000 miles; a switch to MCI telephone service scored another 5,000 or so. An MCI WorldCom/SkyMiles long-distance card is good for five 10 HAROLD FLAGG miles per dollar spent. There is at least one case where a motormouth literally talked his way into a free trip! Investors can rack up major mileage via Delta

The outcome of change, however, depends on how it is received and acted upon by each person. In today's culture of instant gratification and age of technology, each day can be a new challenge. Growing up in the Thirties, Dr. Anna Louise Scott lived when work was valued, self-reliance was necessary, and honesty, morality, and religion were a way of life. People refer to this generation as the greatest, but Dr. Scott likes to call it "The Good Old Days." Dr. Scott has observed today's children and has very grave concerns about their culture compared to prior generations. She wondered what it was like in today's average home. To find out, she visited her grandchildren. Amazed by what was occurring, Dr. Scott decided to educate her grandchildren about what it was like back in the Good Old Days. Though many stories were shared, inquisitive questions were asked with humorous answers. The children were amazed to learn what it was like "back then" and wondered how anyone survived. At the end of her tale, Dr. Scott will share the one event in her life that changed everything.

Book A Jane Austen Education

Download or read book A Jane Austen Education written by William Deresiewicz and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2011-04-28 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An eloquent memoir of a young man's life transformed by literature. In A Jane Austen Education, Austen scholar William Deresiewicz turns to the author's novels to reveal the remarkable life lessons hidden within. With humor and candor, Deresiewicz employs his own experiences to demonstrate the enduring power of Austen's teachings. Progressing from his days as an immature student to a happily married man, Deresiewicz's A Jane Austen Education is the story of one man's discovery of the world outside himself. A self-styled intellectual rebel dedicated to writers such as James Joyce and Joseph Conrad, Deresiewicz never thought Austen's novels would have anything to offer him. But when he was assigned to read Emma as a graduate student at Columbia, something extraordinary happened. Austen's devotion to the everyday, and her belief in the value of ordinary lives, ignited something in Deresiewicz. He began viewing the world through Austen's eyes and treating those around him as generously as Austen treated her characters. Along the way, Deresiewicz was amazed to discover that the people in his life developed the depth and richness of literary characters-that his own life had suddenly acquired all the fascination of a novel. His real education had finally begun. Weaving his own story-and Austen's-around the ones her novels tell, Deresiewicz shows how her books are both about education and themselves an education. Her heroines learn about friendship and feeling, staying young and being good, and, of course, love. As they grow up, they learn lessons that are imparted to Austen's reader, who learns and grows by their sides. A Jane Austen Education is a testament to the transformative power of literature, a celebration of Austen's mastery, and a joy to read. Whether for a newcomer to Austen or a lifelong devotee, Deresiewicz brings fresh insights to the novelist and her beloved works. Ultimately, Austen's world becomes indelibly entwined with our own, showing the relevance of her message and the triumph of her vision.
