Problems that surface in their marriage when Alex sends their two sons to boarding school deepen when both sons leave to work in Sydney after university. Unexpectedly, Alex retires and returns to live permanently with Maggie after being diagnosed with leukaemia. Shortly before his death, having suspicions about the contents of a cassette tape which he asks her to take to his solicitor friend, Maggie listens to the tape and is outraged to find he is making a new Will, leaving comparatively little to herself but vast sums of money to their sons and to a male person unknown to her in Australia. When challenged about this person, Alex's reply fuels thoughts of a dark, mysterious past. As a consequence, anger and humiliation stop Maggie from delivering the tape. As sole beneficiary of the existing Will, Maggie embarks upon a dramatic course of action to change her life once probate is granted in her favour, leading to complicated issues, surprising developments and a new love interest. .

Download or read book All of Programming written by Andrew Hilton and published by Bracy and Hilton. This book was released on 2015-08-18 with total page 777 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of Programming provides a platform for instructors to design courses which properly place their focus on the core fundamentals of programming, or to let a motivated student learn these skills independently. A student who masters the material in this book will not just be a competent C programmer, but also a competent programmer. We teach students how to solve programming problems with a 7-step approach centered on thinking about how to develop an algorithm. We also teach students to deeply understand how the code works by teaching students how to execute the code by hand. A few notes about using this book: (1) This book contains embedded videos. Not all readers support video. If you read directly on Google Play, you can only see videos in "flowable text" mode. (2) Blocks of code and other large items do not format well in flowable text mode. You can select "original page" mode to view such things in a full page layout as they were in the original pdf version.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who is a Jew? What is a Jew? In this all-encompassing study, Dr. Schiff probes these questions to help explain the prominence of Jewish characters in drama since World War II. The Jew has evolved into one of the most popular personages on the contemporary stage.Dramatists, both Jew and Gentile, in the United States and Europe, have been mining recently introduced concepts of the Jew to create a highly diversified and unfamiliar breed of dramatis personae. From Stereotype to Metaphor tracks the evolution of the Jewish persona on the stage. From the debut of the Jew on the Western stage in the Middle Ages to the present century, Dr. Schiff investigates how the Jew has evolved from the stereotypical figures of biblical patriarchs, moneymen and villains into latter-day everyman. This book traces the line of descent of the stage Jew from church drama, Shakespeare, Milton, and Racine to modern playwrights, including Miller, Gibson, Pinter, Wesker, Anouilh, Grumberg, and Woody Allen, concentrating on the development of the stage Jew since 1945.

Book excerpt: A fresh translation of The New Science, with detailed footnotes that will help both the scholar and the new reader navigate Vico's masterpiece The New Science is the major work of Italian philosopher Giambattista Vico. First published in 1725 and revised in 1730 and 1744, it calls for a reinterpretation of human civilization by tracing the stages of historical development shared by all societies. Almost unknown during his lifetime, the work had a profound influence on later thinkers, from Montesquieu and Marx to Joyce and Gadamer. This edition offers a fresh translation and detailed annotations which enable the reader to track Vico's multiple allusions to other texts. The introduction situates the work firmly within a contemporary context and newly establishes Vico as a thinker of modernity.

Book excerpt: The Dharmasutras are the four surviving works of the ancient Indian expert tradition on the subject of dharma, or the rules of behaviour a community recognizes as binding on its members. Written in a pithy and aphoristic style and representing the culmination of a long tradition of scholarship, the Dharmasutras record intense disputes and divergent views on such subjects as the education of the young and their rites of passage, ritual procedures and religious ceremonies, marriage and marital rights and obligations, dietary restrictions, the right professions for and the proper interaction between different social groups, sins and their expiations, institutions for the pursuit of holiness, king and the administration of justice, crimes and punishments, death and ancestral rites. In short, these unique documents give us a glimpse of how people, especially Brahmin males, were ideally expected to live their lives within an ordered and hierarchically arranged society. In this first English translation of the Dharmasutras for over a century, Patrick Olivelle uses the same lucid and elegant style as in his award-winning translation of the Upanisads and incorporates the most recent scholarship on ancient Indian law, society, and religion. Complex material is helpfully organized, making this the ideal edition for the non-specialist as well as for students of Indian society and religion.

Download or read book Hermeneutic Humility and the Political Theology of Cinema written by Sean Desilets and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book revisits the tradition of Western religious cinema in light of scholarship on St. Paul’s political theology. The book’s subtitle derives from the account in the Book of Acts that St. Paul was temporarily blinded in the wake of his conversion on the road to Damascus. In imitation of Paul, the films on which Sean Desilets’s analysis hinges (including those of Carl-Th. Dreyer, Robert Bresson, Pier Paolo Pasolini, and Carlos Reygadas) place a god-blind mechanism, the camera, between themselves and the divine. Desilets calls the posture they adopt "hermeneutic humility": hermeneutic in that it interprets the world, but humble in that it pays particular—even obsessive—attention to its own limits. Though these films may not consciously reflect Pauline theology, Desilets argues that they participate in a messianic-hermeneutic tradition that runs from Paul through St. Augustine, Blaise Pascal, Karl Barth, and Walter Benjamin, and which contributes significantly to contemporary discussions in poststructuralist literary theory, political theology, and religious studies. Desilets’s insightful explication of Jean-Luc Nancy’s deconstruction of Christianity and Georgio Agamben’s recent work on religion makes a substantial contribution to film philosophy and emerging critical trends in the study of religion and film. This book puts forward a nuanced theoretical framework that will be useful for film scholars, students of contemporary political theology, and scholars interested in the intersections of religion and media.
