Book Nineteenth century Crime Prevention and Punishment

Download or read book Nineteenth century Crime Prevention and Punishment written by John Jacob Tobias and published by Newton Abbot [Eng.] : David & Charles. This book was released on 1972 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Crime is an important and persistent theme in the social history of the nineteenth century, always in the public eye and a source of controversy, yet even today lacking an objective literature. Dr Tobias approaches his subject through a wide selection of contemporary documents. After a general introduction, the first section shows that the people of the nineteenth century were as familiar as we are with the social causes of crime. The second gives descriptions of the criminals, their methods of work and the places in which they lived, some from criminals themselves; the third section presents some statistics of nineteenth-century crime with contemporary discussion of the problems of enumeration in this field. The fourth describes the changing policing systems of the era; the fifth portrays the debate about the penal theory and the actual penal practices of the century. Dr Tobias has succeeded in blending the less well-known with the familiar in selecting his extracts. Each document is accompanied by linking paragraphs and full bibliographical notes"--dust jacket

Book Crime Its Causes and Remedies

Download or read book Crime Its Causes and Remedies written by Cesare Lombroso and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crime, Its Causes and Remedies is a work of criminology by author and Professor of Criminal Anthropology, Cesare Lombroso. Lombroso was a professor at the Italian University of Turin, and thus all of his works were written in Italian. This book, translated by Henry P. Horton, was not released in English until after Lombroso's death. It was selected by the American Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology for translation and deemed vitally important in the understanding of crime and criminals. Part one examines the factors that contribute to crime, paying more attention to the individual than to environmental factors. Part two looks at ways in which crime can be reduced and avoided, highlighting both effective and ineffective measures that have been used. Part three applies the lessons of the first two parts to propose a detailed system for dealing with crime and criminals, from the penalties that criminals should face to the appropriate institutions they should be held in. If nothing else, Crime, Its Causes and Remedies is a case study on how far a field of science can progress in 100 years. Much of the content of this book is hopelessly out of date and many of the theories forwarded in this book would be highly controversial if presented today, including equating epileptics and criminals, and the heavy reliance on racial profiling. This book is valuable mostly for the historical insights it provides into criminology and moral attitudes rather than as a source of textbook knowledge about the subject. Book Crime History and Histories of Crime

Download or read book Crime History and Histories of Crime written by Clive Emsley and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1996 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When is a crime a crime—or an act condoned by a significant portion of society? When is a criminal a criminal—or a revolutionary or a national hero? As the chapters in this collection make clear, what constitutes criminal activity varies, to a degree, among different societies and at different moments in a society's history. In this wide-ranging work, major historians of criminology and penology examine aspects of crime and criminal justice from medieval Western Europe to modern day Canada. In addition to examining crime, the judicial system, and punishment in various societies, the chapters look at the evolution of police systems as societies urbanize and undergo population changes. Together these chapters look at many key questions concerning the modern study of criminal behavior. As such, the volume will be of great interest to researchers and scholars of the history of crime.

Book The Challenge of Crime in a Free Society

Download or read book The Challenge of Crime in a Free Society written by United States. President's Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report of the President's Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice -- established by President Lyndon Johnson on July 23, 1965 -- addresses the causes of crime and delinquency and recommends how to prevent crime and delinquency and improve law enforcement and the administration of criminal justice. In developing its findings and recommendations, the Commission held three national conferences, conducted five national surveys, held hundreds of meetings, and interviewed tens of thousands of individuals. Separate chapters of this report discuss crime in America, juvenile delinquency, the police, the courts, corrections, organized crime, narcotics and drug abuse, drunkenness offenses, gun control, science and technology, and research as an instrument for reform. Significant data were generated by the Commission's National Survey of Criminal Victims, the first of its kind conducted on such a scope. The survey found that not only do Americans experience far more crime than they report to the police, but they talk about crime and the reports of crime engender such fear among citizens that the basic quality of life of many Americans has eroded. The core conclusion of the Commission, however, is that a significant reduction in crime can be achieved if the Commission's recommendations (some 200) are implemented. The recommendations call for a cooperative attack on crime by the Federal Government, the States, the counties, the cities, civic organizations, religious institutions, business groups, and individual citizens. They propose basic changes in the operations of police, schools, prosecutors, employment agencies, defenders, social workers, prisons, housing authorities, and probation and parole officers.
