Book Chinese English Contrastive Grammar

Download or read book Chinese English Contrastive Grammar written by David C. S. Li and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2017-07-03 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of Chinese-English Contrastive Grammar: An Introduction is to familiarize the reader with a subset of the learning difficulties and common errors in ESL/EFL pronunciation and lexico-grammatical structures encountered by Chinese learners and users of English, in Hong Kong and beyond. It also helps readers understand some of the ways in which the Chinese language has undergone structural change as a result of Europeanization. The book begins with a review of Cantonese-English contrastive phonology and is followed by a detailed analysis of lexico-grammatical deviations found among Chinese ESL/EFL learners. It concludes with a brief history of the Europeanization of the Chinese language and a discussion of commonly encountered lingua-cultural problems encountered by Chinese users of English in intercultural communication settings. This book is written primarily for teachers and students specializing in language-related disciplines. Scholars who wish to understand the acquisitional challenges for Chinese students in the process of learning English as an additional language will also find the book an informative reference. ‘David C. S. Li and Zoe Pei-sui Luk’s brand new introduction to Chinese-English contrastive grammar covers a number of key topics and comes with copious data, abundant exemplification, and in-depth analyses. A must-read for all who are interested in the similarities and differences between the two languages, and why.’ —K. K. Luke, Nanyang Technological University ‘This is a book which has long been needed. Drawing on their own research and teaching experience, the authors have produced a linguistically accurate and insightful, but also very readable book. It should be required reading for language teachers in Hong Kong and the Greater China region.’ —Stephen Matthews, University of Hong Kong

Book Contrastive Analysis of Chinese and English Syntax

Download or read book Contrastive Analysis of Chinese and English Syntax written by Ruixi Ressy Ai and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-02-27 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces a contrastive analysis of Chinese and English syntax based on generative grammar. It covers major syntactic domains, including but not limited to noun phrases, verb phrases, the inflectional domain, the discourse-related domain and ellipsis. Based on the empirical data drawn from both Chinese and English, and recast in modern linguistic terminology, the book introduces various rules and theoretical modules from the generative framework to analyze the similarities and differences between Chinese and English syntax. The chapters are arranged such that the book moves from the easiest syntactic topics gradually towards the more complex and advanced ones. Each chapter includes a short summary of major points and references for further reading. Readers are not required to have background knowledge in syntax. The book can serve as a textbook or a reference book for scholars of Chinese studies, Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (TCFL), Chinese linguistics, comparative linguistics and theoretical linguistics.

Book Corpus Based Contrastive Studies of English and Chinese

Download or read book Corpus Based Contrastive Studies of English and Chinese written by Tony McEnery and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-07-02 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with cross-linguistic contrast of major grammatical categories in English and Chinese, two most important yet genetically different world languages. This genetic difference has resulted in many subsidiary differences that are, among other things, related to grammar. Compared with typologically related languages, cross-linguistic contrast of English and Chinese is more challenging yet promising. The main theme of this book lies in its focus on cross-linguistic contrast of aspect-related grammatical categories, or, grammatical categories that contribute to aspectual meaning – both situation aspect at the semantic level and viewpoint aspect at the grammatical level – in English and Chinese. The unique strength of this volume lies in that it is first corpus-based book contrasting English and Chinese. Given that the state of the art in language studies is to use corpora, the significance of the marriage between contrastive studies and the corpus methodology in this book is not to be underestimated.

Book Clause Combination in Chinese

Download or read book Clause Combination in Chinese written by Halvor Eifring and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-13 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clause Combination in Chinese is an abundantly documented study of composite sentences in Modern Chinese, their semantic properties and syntactic behaviour. It discusses the extent of language variation, the relation between synchrony and diachrony, the nature of grammaticalization, generality and gradience, and the non-uniqueness of syntactic analysis. The first part provides a new categorization of clause combinations and clause connectives. It introduces a class of connectives often combining units larger than the sentence. It also discusses the frequent non-use of clause connectives in Chinese composite sentences. The second part contains case studies of composite sentences with unusual semantic properties, among them a hitherto unrecognized pattern with no English counterpart: adverbial clauses expressing necessity. The book should be of interest to all students of Chinese linguistics and to general linguists concerned with sentence complexity.

Book Clause Combining in Grammar and Discourse

Download or read book Clause Combining in Grammar and Discourse written by John Haiman and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally the study of syntax is restricted to the study of what goes on within the boundaries of the prosodic sentence. Although the nature of clause combining within a prosodic sentence has always been a central concern of traditional syntax (in GG, e.g. it underlies important research on deletion and anaphora), work within a discourse analysis framework has hardly been done. Analyses like this are given in the present volume.

Book The Mandarin VP

Download or read book The Mandarin VP written by Rint Sybesma and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mandarin VP deals with a number of constructions in Mandarin Chinese which involve the main verb and the material following it, like the object NPs, resultative phrases, durative expressions and other elements. The basis claim defended in this book is that all elements that follow the main verb in a Mandarin sentence form one single constituent which functions as the complement of the verb. The Mandarin VP offers new and original analyses of such hot issues as resultative constructions, the ba-construction and verb-le. In addition, the conclusions drawn from the research into Mandarin syntax are discussed in more general theoretic terms, which leads to original proposals regarding the internal make-up of accomplishments and the status of Theta Theory. The research reported on in this book was concluded within the bounds of mainstream generative theorizing. The Mandarin VP is of interest to all syntacticians, especially those interested in Chinese.
