Book A Continuous Narrative of Post Flood History

Download or read book A Continuous Narrative of Post Flood History written by John D Pilkey and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-07-24 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historical record of humankind in the third millennium before Christ bears the stamp of Noah's family and of the events and structures outlined in Genesis 9-11. The purpose of monogenetic study is to consolidate the Biblical explanation of human origins by generating a historical science based on the family of Noah. The goal is to create a coherent Christian synthesis of the disjointed data of antiquarian study. This goal was pursued by a variety of authors between 1650 and 1820: Samuel Bochart, Paul Pezron, William Stukeley, Jacob Bryant, Sir William Jones, George Faber, and others. My logic resembles theirs. The difference between my work and theirs lies in the data furnished by archaeology since the discovery of the Sumerians around 1880. The challenge of my work is to combine their logic with the essential information unavailable to them.To trace the nations concretely from Noah is to consolidate the usage of John 3:16 and to picture humankind as former recipients of salvation fit for the evangelical mystery of regeneration. Without completing this task, we leave the "world" in the anonymous, profane condition In the final analysis, the Genesis-10 study is an attempt to advance the cause of holiness at the expense of profanity by countering the view that the world of humankind is the anonymous result of natural causes. The goal of monogenetic study is to consolidate, in scientific terms, the Biblical view that this world owes its existence to the sacred history of Noah. The study embodied in this postdiluvian timeline takes the Flood as seriously as it can be taken. Instead of reasoning about the Flood, it reasons from the Flood. That is what faith does. It "sanctifies" subjects by conferring on them the value of presuppositions rather than debate topics. I put the Flood to work by deducing the whole of ancient world history from it. Logically I cannot do otherwise. If the Flood happened and reduced the human race to four men and four women, it holds the key to every scrap of evidence deriving from human existence in the second half of the third millennium BCE. An accurate understanding of biblical monogenesis must be built, not on generalities, but on specific identifications of ancient names with a core of elite human beings listed in the text of Genesis 10-11. The Table of Nations in Genesis 10 refers to both races and men according to a pattern of interlocking feudal relationships. A systematic study of these lists by means of comparison with selected historical and mythological names results in certain surprises. At the time of the Flood, the four female survivors gained high importance as genetic carriers of the Adamic heritage of four races. thing- the lack of theologically explicit leadership. The eight persons who survived the Flood lived and breathed theocracy. Efforts to interpret these persons from a modern, democratic perspective have been ludicrous. In fact, the democratic mind despairs of ever understanding them and translates that despair into denial. Modern man doubts the Book of Genesis because he cannot cope with its political implications. The early postdiluvian lived in a context where gods, heroes, kings, and priests were given. "Kingship descended from heaven," reports the Sumerian King-List. Secularists have done their best to suppress this reality. They instinctively shun conflict based on the rivalry of theocratic power. Much of the narrative content of this study concerns such conflict. During the 350 years that remained to Noah after the Flood, his family created a political universe as evidenced by the systematic appearance of Sumerian city-states and the voluminous Sumerian King-List. We still live in the outer precincts of that universe.

Download or read book Before the Flood written by Ian Wilson and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights. The great Biblical flood so described in Genesis has long been a subject of fascination and speculation. In the 19th century the English archbishop James Ussher established it as having happened in the year 2348 B.C., calculating what was then taken as the age of the earth and working backward through the entire series of Biblical "begats." Proof of the flood, which is an element of so many creation myths, began in earnest when archaeology started connecting physical evidence with Biblical story. The dream of proving the Bible as literal truth has proven irresistible, producing both spurious claims and serious scholarship. As best-selling historian Ian Wilson reveals in this fascinating new book, evidence of a catastrophic event has been building steadily, culminating in the work of William Ryan and Walter Pitman. Several years ago Ryan and Pitman had posited that around 5600 BC there had an inundation in the Black Sea of such proportions that it turned the freshwater lake into a saltwater lake by connecting it to the Mediterranean. Were that true, they estimated that there would be signs of civilization 300 feet below the surface of the Black Sea. In September 2000, using his famous underwater equipment, Robert Ballard (of SS Titanic fame) explored parts of the Black Sea near the Turkish shore and found the remains of wood houses. There had been a flood, and whether God's wrath or not it had destroyed everything around it for hundreds of miles, killing tens of thousands of people. Exploring all the archeological evidence, Wilson explains how the Black Sea flood and the Biblical flood have to be connected. In particular, Wilson argues, learnedly and persuasively, that the center of the civilized world was further to the West than previously thought-not in Egypt or Mesopotamia but in what is today Northern Turkey. The earliest, antediluvian civilizations may have migrated east into those places we have come to call the cradles of civilization, forced by the Black Sea flood to create new settlements. Scrupulous in its details and compelling in its sweep, Before the Flood is narrative detective history at its most provocative, contributing a vital new chapter to the debate about the Bible and origins of the modern world.

Download or read book After Bardaisan written by G. J. Reinink and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1999 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present collection of twenty-five studies represents the general theme of 'continuity and change', as applied to various topics connected with the rich heritage of Syriac culture. These studies cover the period from the early third to the fourteenth centuries, with an incidental excursion into modern times. The focal areas are early Syriac Christianity and its Umwelt and the later West Syrian and East Syrian traditions. Most of the contributions deal with historical subjects, with the general theme elaborated in two different directions: first, ecclesiastical history, monasticism, hagiography and theology, and second, secular history, literature, scholarship, ideas and religions. In a more specific sense the contributions focus on patterns of cultural continuity and change, such as the influence and reception of Greek secular and theological culture and literature, developments within early and later Syriac asceticism, religious controversy, the interaction between different religious communities, and the effects of major political and social changes on the cultural and religious life of the various Syriac communities. One of the most radical political changes in the Middle East concerns the Arab conquest and the rise of Islam in the seventh century. Some authors explicitly discuss the consequences of these changes for the Christian (Syriac and Armenian) populations. The effects of these historical events on intellectual, social and economic life are some of the topics discussed in this connection. Of particular interest is the number of newly edited Syriac texts in this volume, which make available translations of Greek theological works, works resulting from the reception of pagan philosophy, and magic texts reflecting popular belief.

Book After the Floods

Download or read book After the Floods written by Ken Conca and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-13 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One small town, two "thousand-year floods" in the span of two years: how does a community become resilient in the face of the ever-increasing risks of climate change? Small towns across America and around the world face mounting challenges with flood risk, a result of not only climate change but also poorly adapted landscapes, sprawl, overdevelopment and poor planning. After the Floods is about Ellicott City, a small town in central Maryland that experienced two devastating flash floods just 22 months apart. Despite the town's many advantages—wealth, access to expertise, a mobilized community, and a stout identity steeped in 250 years of history—Ellicott City found itself mired in a deeply divisive argument over what to do in the aftermath. As a resident, Ken Conca bore firsthand witness to the conflict that took root when the flood waters receded. While this book is about one residential suburb, the dilemmas that it faces over how to adapt to climate change are coming soon to a small town near you. On one level a story about re-engineering a landscape, After the Floods ultimately grapples with uncertainty over local history, justice, democracy, and identity. What can we know about future risks to our communities? What is the meaning of place and history when preservation goals come into conflict with flood protection? What should we protect? Who gets to speak for the community? In Ellicott City's search for answers, we can find important lessons for other small communities that must begin preparing for future climate risks.
