Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second volume of Condensed Matter Theories contains the proceedings of the 10th International Workshop held at Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, IL, U.S.A. during the week of July 21, 1986. The workshop was attended by high-energy, nuclear and condensed-matter physicists as well as materials scientists. This diverse blend of participants was in keeping with the flavor of the previous workshops. This annual series of international workshops was"started in 1977 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Subsequent'workshops were held in Trieste (Italy), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Caracas (Venezuela), Altenberg (West Germany), Granada (Spain), and San Francisco (U.S.A.). What began as a meeting of the physicists from the Western Hemisphere has expanded in the last three years into an international conference of scientists with diverse interests and backgrounds. This diversity has promoted a healthy exchange of ideas from different branches of physics and also fruitful interactions among the participants. The present volume is a continuation of the effort started last year when the invited papers from the 9th International Workshop were published by Plenum Press. Our only trepidation in organizing a book of this kind stemmed from the diversity of the material, which did not lend itself easily to well-defined topics. Still, the articles are loosely divided into eight categories, where the papers in each category have either a common theme or the same underlying technique.

Book The Dynamically Compressed Metallic State Theory

Download or read book The Dynamically Compressed Metallic State Theory written by N. W. Ashcroft and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research has combined two major themes: the statistical mechanics of classical systems under conditions typical of shock or explosive environments, and the quantum statistical mechanics of inhomogeneous electron systems embedded in these classical ensembles. The project began with an application of the thermodynamics and structure of the liquid state, but applied in the context of a dynamic solid. The method developed allowed us to reduce Hugoniot data to isotherms without the necessity of invoking any Gruneisen type of law. It was constructed explicitly for the case of insulating systems, but we were already able to see a possible modification for metals. A system that seemed to remain very much an insulator under severe dynamic loading was SiO2, whose band structure (in the fluorite phase) we calculated using the self-consistent augmented spherical wave method. Pressure as a general indicator of trends in electronic structure appears to be a tool of increasing value and versatility. When high pressures are generated by shock methods, there is usually an accompanying increase in temperature, often very substantial. For nuclear driven shocks these temperatures can become so high that an electron system is driven far from degeneracy.

Book Electrons in Disordered Metals and at Metallic Surfaces

Download or read book Electrons in Disordered Metals and at Metallic Surfaces written by P. Phariseau and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present here the transcripts of lectures and talks which were delivered at the NATO ADVANCED STUDY INSTITUTE "Electrons in Disordered Hetals and at ~~etallic Surfaces" held at the State University of Ghent, Belgium between August 28 and September 9, 1978. The aim of these lectures was to highlight some of the current progress in our understanding of the degenerate electron 'liquid' in an external field which is neither uniform nor periodic. This theme brought together such topics as the electronic structure at metallic surfaces and in random metallic alloys, liquid metals and metallic glasses. As is the case in connection with infinite order ed crystals, the central issues to be discussed were the nature of the electronic spectra, the stability of the various phases and the occurrence of such phenomena as magnetism and supercon ductivity. In the theoretical lectures the emphasis was on detailed rea listic calculations based, more or less, on the density functional approach to the problem of the inhomogeneous electron liquid. How ever, where such calculations were not available, as in the case of magnetism in random alloys and that of metallic glasses, sim pler phenomenological models were used. The theoretical discussions were balanced by reviews of the most promising experimental techniques. Here the stress was on results and their relevance to the fundamental theory. lforeover, the attention had centered on those experiments which probe the electronic structure in the greatest detail.

Book Many body Theory of a Rapidly Varying Inhomogeneous Electron Gas

Download or read book Many body Theory of a Rapidly Varying Inhomogeneous Electron Gas written by John William Gadzuk and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The case of an inhomogeneous electron gas within which the density variation is significant over a spatial range of the order of a Fermi wave-length is considered in this report. It is seen that for most systems of physical interest, this sort of non-uniformity is a result of diffraction effects. This is a fundamentally different phenomenon than can reasonably be treated by the density gradient method of Kohn for slowly varying inhomogeneous electron gases. Several sample cases are treated. The first considerations are directed towards the problem of a weak periodic potential in an interacting electron gas. The momentum-dependent self-energy is calculated for an electron propagating in the many-body medium of an electron gas plus a periodic lattice pseudo-potential. This is the equivalent of a quasi-particle energy spectrum and thus an orthogonalized plane wave energy band. It does not appear that the lattice drastically changes qualitative aspects of plane wave many-body theory. A dielectric formulation for a general inhomogeneous electron gas is presented. By introducing a new image technique, the dielectric function within the random phase approximation, which is valid in the surface region of an electron gas, is obtained. A Green's function formalism is developed for treating the static dielectric screening of a point impurity in an electron gas. The surface dielectric function is used with the impurity screening formalism to treat the problem of impurity screening in the surface region. This is an idealized model of ionic adsorption on metal surface. Screening charge densities resulting from volume polarization effects are calculated. From these results, it is seen why unjustifiable application of classical image forces in previous adsorption theories has fortunately produced reasonable results. A new method for obtaining the appropriate plasmon contribution to the electron self-energy in the surface region is developed. With these results, the electron gas surface potentials calculated by Loucks and Cutler are then improved.
