Book A Conscious Program for the Normal Schools and Teachers Colleges of America Vol 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Conscious Program for the Normal Schools and Teachers Colleges of America Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by National Education Associati Principles and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Conscious Program for the Normal Schools and Teachers Colleges of America, Vol. 3 To the teacher-training schools Of America are entrusted the duties and responsibilities of leadership - the era of followership for us is past. Such progress as is to come to public education in the future is to come from the teachers who, though they may not know their subjects better will certainly know the social bearings of their subjects better, and will certainly know the nature Of the learning process better. If this is to be so, it will be because the institutions that prepare teachers have become better able to focus them selves upon the characteristic problems of teacher-training. And this in turn implies that a better method of determining what are the pressing tasks of normal schools has been adopted. After a long period of largely unconscious experimentation we are reaching the vantage from which our progress - our advance in efficiency of service - can become conscious. To have leadership we must have a conscious program. When we have this we can dispense with the ornaments of rhetoric and will take the pains to work out the implications of the blanket phrases in which we have long cast our philosophy. Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book Public School Methods Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Public School Methods Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-08 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public School Methods, Vol. 1 Many people who purchase books fail to derive the greatest benefit from their purchase because they do not at first take the trouble to become acquainted with the plan and Scope Of the work. The editor Of Public School Methods wishes to forestall this difficulty by urging every purchaser of a set Of these volumes to read the Preface and Foreword as the first step in the use of the work. In vol. III, Chapter IX, Books and Libraries, will be found specific directions for using books, and every teacher will find these directions helpful in showing her how to use Public School Methods. The second feature to which we wish to call special atten tion is Plans for Teaching. These plans follow the chapters on all the common branches, and carry the work Of each subject through the year for each grade. In the first grade they even go into details for each day's lesson. In the others they outline the work for each month. The plans follow the most recent courses Of study. They have been prepared by those who have devoted many years as practical teachers; consequently, they are thoroughly practicable. Nothing is suggested that has not proved successful wherever it has been tried. Teachers will find these plans a safe guide, and their use will save much time and effort which can be profitably spent in other ways. The close relation existing between the Kindergarten and the first grade in the public schools has been recognized, and both the Kindergarten and primary teacher will find the chapter Kindergarten especially helpful. This Chapter was pre pared by Miss Katharine Martin Of the School of Education, University of Chicago, and is strong and practical throughout. Many new stories with illustrations have been added to the chapters on Reading, and the teachers will find this new material valuable in making the connection between the lessons on the blackboard and those in the primer. It also furnishes excellent material for supplementary reading. The chapter on Language by Miss Achsah May Harris Of the State Normal School, Emporia, Kansas, is replete with methods, suggestions and material covering this important work for the first three grades. Every page Of this chapter is practical and the suggestions can be applied in any school. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Education for the Needs of Life

Download or read book Education for the Needs of Life written by Irving Elgar Miller and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education for the Needs of Life: A d104book in the Principles of Education, for Use in Elementary Classes in Normal Schools and Colleges and in Institutes and Reading Circles The preparation of this book is the direct outgrowth of the generous appreciation given to the writer's "Psychology of Thinking." The dominant point of view of that book is here applied more widely to the interpretation of education. Although treating of principles and fundamental ideas rather than of details, nevertheless the attempt has been made to express the thought simply enough to make the book useful as a text in elementary courses in Normal Schools and Colleges and as the basis of discussion for groups of students who are working together in reading circles and teachers institutes. Education is conceived as an integral phase of the life process. Everything that lives has needs to be met. In so far as any living being actually modifies its own behavior in the light of experience, learning occurs. Conscious, or intentional, education gives guidance and direction to the natural learning processes. It does not substitute something else for the principles, laws, and methods of nature; it works in harmony with them and facilitates nature in the attainment of her goal in the lives of individuals. The outcome is that the needs of life are met better, more fully, and at higher levels. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
