Book The Waning Authority of Christ in the Churches

Download or read book The Waning Authority of Christ in the Churches written by A Tozer and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-11-13 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been described by James L. Snyder as Tozer's valedictory. It was his last message ever given to God's people. Written shortly before his death in 1963, it was published two days after his death. It is a challenging message to all who want to walk with Christ. "HERE IS THE BURDEN of my heart; and while I claim for myself no special inspiration I yet feel that this is also the burden of the Spirit. If I know my own heart it is love alone that moves me to write this. What I write here is not the sour ferment of a mind agitated by contentions with my fellow Christians. There have been no such contentions. I have not been abused, mistreated or attacked by anyone. Nor have these observations grown out of any unpleasant experiences that I have had in my association with others. My relations with my own church as well as with Christians of other denominations have been friendly, courteous and pleasant. My grief is simply the result of a condition which I believe to be almost universally prevalent among the churches."

Claude avers that he did so, he must then also say, that because Jesus Christ's miracles were rejected as deceitful signs by the envious, by the obstinate--in one word, by the declared enemies of the truth, these miracles were not sufficiently convincing to oblige men to believe Jesus Christ on his word, without examining further; and that, for example, after he had raised Lazarus, in express testimony that God had sent him, those who were even eye-witnesses to so great a miracle were, I do not say permitted, but expressly obliged to examine whether Jesus Christ were sent by God. He must, I say, carry the necessity of the examination to this excess: otherwise it will be true, as I observed, that there was then a visible and palpable authority to which every one ought to submit, without examining; so that there was never any time, when men were less exposed to the temptation of pride, by exalting themselves above all living and speaking authority, since Jesus Christ, the most living and speaking authority, as well as the greatest and most infallible that ever was, was then on earth, and men preferred themselves before the synagogue, only for the purpose of submitting to Jesus Christ, whose miracles, as himself said, took away all excuse from those that believed not in him: f this the assembly that condemned him knew so well, that they found no other...

Book By what Authority

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert L. Millet
  • Publisher : Mercer University Press
  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 0881462012
  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book By what Authority written by Robert L. Millet and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the apostles Peter and John had healed the lame man at the Gate Beautiful, the two disciples were arrested and later brought before the Sanhedrin to account for their deed, one that continued to stir the already anxious leaders of the Jews: "And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, "By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?" (Acts 4:7). Indeed, what was the source of their miracle? And by what power or authority did they perform it? Those queries ring through the centuries because people in our day still pose the questions. Most Christians want to be a part of a denomination or organization that is true, faithful to what existed in the first century, authorised, and therefore approved of God. They want to know, in other words, that God is governing among his people, that he is empowering the body of Christ of which they are a part. The essays in this book address the central issue of such authority in the Christian life. --Book Jacket.

Book Understanding the Congregation s Authority

Download or read book Understanding the Congregation s Authority written by Jonathan Leeman and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2016-01-15 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Congregational authority is less about the meetings and more about the mission. Congregationalism has a bad rap for well-known reasons: inefficient meetings, upstart members, browbeaten ministers. But biblical congregationalism isn’t so much about the meetings. It’s about empowering the whole church to promote and protect the gospel. Pastors lead and equip. Members get to work strengthening one another and pursuing Christ’s mission in the world.

Book Readings in Church Authority

Download or read book Readings in Church Authority written by Richard Gaillardetz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issues of Authority and Governance in the Roman Catholic Church permeate each and every aspect of the Church's identity, teaching, influence, organisation, moral values and pastoral provision. They have left their mark, in turn, upon its diverse theological and philosophical traditions. The trends of postmodernity, advances in communication, the advent of new ecclesial movements and theologies, and a perceived policy towards increasing institutional centralisation on the part of the Curial authorities of the Church in Rome, have all facilitated a continuous and lively stream of dialogue and disagreement on authority and governance in relation to the place of the Church in our age and the new Millennium. This comprehensive Reader uniquely gathers together in one volume key writings and documents from the wealth of published literature that has emerged on the issues of authority and governance in the Roman Catholic Church. With guided introductions to each section and to each reading, and end of chapter further reading lists, this Reader offers a balanced range of perspectives, themes, international writings, ecumenical dimensions, and formal church documents and Papal pronouncements on core areas of contemporary study and debate. Focusing on the modern/post-modern period in the Roman Catholic Church, but grounded in the historical contexts, Readings in Church Authority presents an accessible source book and introduction for all those exploring current debates and studying central themes in church authority.
