Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the diary of a North Carolina farmer, Bartlett Yancey Malone, who fought during the American Civil War from July, 1861, to November, 1863, when he was captured and made prisoner. He performed no extraordinary feat of heroism, at least none was recorded; he participated with distinction in no political movement of importance; he played no role which would cause historians to single him out for particular notice. But his diary is of great human interest which reveals, with often comical quaintness of expression, the thoughts of a simple soldier of the ranks--the thoughts, it is to be presumed, of a mass of men, which have oftentimes been inarticulate. There is a frankness about this diary that conveys inevitably--the conviction of sincerity.Half the fun of reading Bart's diary is trying to ferret out his meanings:"A certen cewer for the Toothack if the tooth is hollow take a pease of the scale that is on a horses leg and put it in the hollow of the tooth It is a serten cewer so sais J. H. Lyon."[A certain cure for the toothache, if the tooth is hollow, take a piece of the scale that is on a horse's leg and put it in the hollow of the tooth. It is a certain cure, so says, J.H. Lyon.]Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kate Cumming has become an iconic minor figure of the American Civil War. Her book has been excerpted many times in other works and even in the PBS documentary, Abraham and Mary Lincoln: A House Divided. Her extraordinary journal of her time as a nurse in Confederate hospitals is important for illuminating the history of medicine of Civil War nurses and as an example of the writing of an educated southern woman caught up in the catastrophic effects of war. Kate was highly religious, poetic, compassionate, amusing, embittered by the war, blamed Abraham Lincoln for all that befell the south, and was blind to the realities of African-American life. Yet her record captures the reader and it is difficult to dislike her.Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever.

Book excerpt: Cornelia Peake McDonald kept a diary during the Civil War (1861- 1865) at her husband's request, but some entries were written between the lines of printed books due to a shortage of paper and other entries were lost. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains three diaries as well as various Civil War letters and documents. The first diary was written by Robert H. Wardlaw in 1820 when he was 13 years old and a young scholar and continues until age 18 when he learns of the death of his mother while he was away at school. Robert Wardlaw's ten sons all served the Confederacy and one of those sons, William C. Wardlaw is the author of the other two diaries. William Wardlaw was a captain in Company K of the 2nd SC Rifles, Jenkins Brigade. In addition to daily entries, he logs his locations when letters were sent or received. He writes almost daily of Molly, until he marries Josie. He reports Lincoln's death and the "humiliating ordeal of stacking our arms in the presence of the enemy" at Appomattox Court House. The diaries and letters were transcribed as written, as close to the originals as possible. Some photos are included which provide a realistic view of these fragile pieces of history.

Download or read book Rebel at Large written by Philip Van Buskirk and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2009-10-21 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This diary is one of the most unusual produced during the Civil War because it contains very little about military life. Early in the war Van Buskirk abandoned his regiment, working as a schoolmaster, farmhand, and casual laborer. He wrote of the suffering civilians endured at the hands of contending armies. But he also found time to chronicle his fascination with handsome young lads he encountered during his life as a deserter--unwittingly providing modern readers an illuminating glimpse of class differences and sexual mores. Naval, social and sexual historians, in particular, will find much valuable source material.
